Ronke Shonde - Autopsy Cites Respiratory Seizure As Cause Of Death

As investigations into the death of Mrs. Ronke Shonde, who was allegedly murdered by the husband Lekan, deepens, the much awaited autopsy report, which has been released, might have shed further light into the circumstances that led to her death.

The autopsy report which was taken to the State Criminal Investigation and Investigate Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, at exactly 8.45pm on Wednesday cited one of the chief cause of death as Respiratory Seizure.

The autopsy which was finally concluded on yesterday by pathologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), examined amongst other things, the bruises on her skin.

A police source who spoke to THISDAY said although other possible causes were listed, none of them were inflicted by violence or aggressive battering.
According to the source, although it was not clear what brought about the seizure, the other bruises on her body did not establish that it led to her death.
A medical doctor with the general hospital, who spoke with THISDAY on anonymity explained that seizures can be caused by a change in the behavioral state resulting from an abnormal electrical activity in the brain.
On whether the autopsy exonerates the suspect he said that seizures can be caused by either a severe blow to the head, acute fever or severe case of intoxication.

He said often the person suffering from the seizure might first loose consciousness, leading to stiffening of the body with forceful expiration of air from the throat.
The doctor also explained that if the person having the seizure is standing without support, a fall can can be a hard and fatal.

Meanwhile, Lekan, who turned himself to the police after four days of hiding and is still at the SCIID pending the result of the investigations, has maintained his innocence in the death of his wife.

Confirming the completion of the autopsy report, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent of Police, however declined to comment on the result, especially whether it exonerates the suspect.

She said, “I can confirm that the result is out this night but I cannot give further details. There is a directive from the Inspector General of Police that nobody should comment on the autopsy because it’s for the purpose of investigation.”

    1. For all you know the respiratory seizure may have been caused by the intense pounding she got from her lover on their last escapade shortly before her death. You'll recall she was overheard telling her lover her pussy was hurting after their tryst. To all the ashawos and cheating wives on this blog, you should learn a lesson from this episode and beware of illicit sex.. It could kill!..

  5. This crap I just read appears doctored....
Are they saying she had a brain seizure leading to apnea or what ?
Was she a known seizure disorder patient?
Did she have a first seizure episode which lead to respiratory arrest and subsequently her death?
Was her drink spiked with strychnine?(I'm just pondering since the anonymous doctor stated severe case of intoxication)
Alot of things are left unsaid or incorrectly stated. Hope the anonymous doctor is not someone that just wanted to feel important by talking to the press cause at the bottom of the write up ,those involved where asked not to comment in the autopsy..

With all these brouhaha following her death,I wonder if her soul is resting in peace..

  7. Stella which one is Nigeria we hail thee? Are you suggesting that there is foul play? Well in as much as most of you including myself want this man to be found guilty, the autopsy report just suggested otherwise.
Let us try to be objective for once. Was the man physically and emotionally abusive to his deceased wife? Yes
Did he kill his wife? The autopsy is open ended and with a solid defence attorney, he will walk a free man.
Will he have learnt hia lesson? Most likely and I bet he would remarry in future and his future wife did hopefully reap the benefit of a "reformed" man.
Is there a lesson here? Cettainly. If one finds him/herself in an abusive relationship, it behooves you to save your life by taking a walk cos if you die, we will all use you to learn a lesson.

    4. ‎Just because the autopsy result didn't link him directly to the murder of his wife doesn't mean he has no case to answer. There's is something known as circumstantial evidence which is commonly accepted in most trials for murder or manslaughter, especially where such evidence is compelling and corroborated.

It's rare to have any eyewitness during such murders so the circumstances leading to the death of a person will always be considered. The autopsy may not have linked him to her death but it still didn't categorically state that she died from a preexisting medical condition, so what exactly caused the "respiratory seizure"? The autopsy MUST clearly show the cause of death which MUST have nothing whatsoever to do with him causing her death, not even remotely or the autopsy result will have little evidential weight.‎

Are you aware that in law, if a man gets into a fist fight or any physical altercation with another and the another sustains injuries, even if not too severe. If the injured person dies a year and a day after that fight and nothing shows that the death was caused by another medical condition after a medical examination or autopsy, the person who caused the injury can still be held responsible? Let alone a case where the man admitted slapping his wife and she was found dead soon after without any preexisting medical condition.

If   I, who abandoned criminal law almost 8 years ago can still sniff out issues relevant enough to have a good case against him, even if for manslaughter, I am positive that those legal Pitbulls who prosecute criminals for the state on daily bases or even a private legal practitioner who obtains a fiat to prosecute or join the prosecution will go for the jugular. The law, indeed, is an ass. He isn't nowhere in the clear yet.‎

    1. Once the cause of death is identified & doesn't incriminate the prime suspect, he's free from all charges, free like OJ simpson.

      Delete
    2. That's not true darling. First of all, American criminal system is very different from Nigerian criminal system. OJ Simpson got acquitted because the evidence against him were discredited through the fiery cross-examination by the "dream team" of his defence attorneys. Remember the infamous glove saga where the phrase "if it doesn't fit, you must acquit" was coined? It had nothing to do with the autopsy result.‎

The cause of death of Nicole Brown-Simpson was multiple sharp force injuries to numerous parts of her body amongst other things. It could have been inflicted by anyone with motive and opportunity. OJ walked not because the autopsy didn't connect him to the gruesome murder. He walked because he had a team of sound defence attorneys who were cunning enough to manipulate the justice system and raise reasonable doubt. An autopsy is vital evidence in a murder charge but no court would act solely on the autopsy result to convict or acquit an accused person. Murder trials are taken very seriously by Courts because they carry capital punishment. That's why even if the accused person pleads guilty during arraignment, the court will still proceed to hear the case of the prosecution and the defence of the accused as if he pled not guilty.

Come to think of it, on a sane climate, there won't be talks of she cheated on him that was y he killed her, he committed murder for goodness sake, so y are d guys here saying she slept with another guy, did her husband not imprehnate someone else? Do women kill or maim their partners if u guys cheat? Nigerians always think they have morals but d country is still backward, instead of condemning murder, u are saying she cheated, of this happened in any European country, they won't be justifying d man by saying she provoked him by cheating, that is if d claims are true

Why was he with her phone?

Why did he ask for her mom's forgiveness? He admitted killing her if my memory isn't failing me.

Why was he bragging about being a Lagos boy, he is smart and can choose not to be found?

Why were his friends appealing to him to turn himself in?

Why was he telling everyone that she was a cheat and trying to justify his actions?

Are there no finger prints on Ronke's body ?

Have they spoken to those little kids? An 8year old will have a good memory of what happened 2weeks ago.

    3. @Willie Willie, this isn't a male vs female attack, at least from my perspective. Whatever the autopsy result reveals has little to do with the manifold circumstantial evidence against ‎him. It's premature at this stage to think he will walk free because of an autopsy report which is even questionable. A good prosecutor can draw the court's mind to how sloppy the autopsy result is, questioning its veracity and the court can decide to discountenance it or award very little weight to it.

The way he went about the whole thing makes him seem guilty. He confessed to slapping her, as if that isn't offensive enough, he said he saw her laying on the floor yet he walked out and locked his kids with their mother in that state??? What was so urgent that he had to leave without waiting for the nanny to resume? There are even speculations that he called the nanny not to resume as early as usual. You really think an inconclusive autopsy will explain away all these questions? He has a lot of explaining to do.‎

No matter how you slice it, his actions reveal what is known as mens rea and actus reus in law. The Latin maxim "actus non facit reum nisi mens sit rea" which means "an act doesn't make a person guilty ‎unless the mind is also guilty" throws more weight on his guilt. If the so called "slap" was harmless, why did he act guilty by locking his young kids in the house and go into hiding with his wife's phone? As soon as he heard his wife was dead why didn't he rush back home, if for nothing else, to ensure his kids were alright? Isn't that the act of a guilty mind? You really think one document called an autopsy will blind the court's eyes to these curious questions?

I don't believe the police took bribes, before her death it was obvious that she wanted to leave her husband for her lover, the husband must have poisoned her or made her inhale a particular chemical that can cause respiratory seizure which might not be found in her body after her death, this explains why he didn't look out for her when she didn't come to bed that night.everything was planned, the fight and push was just a bait.thw fight was necessary so that neighbors can hear voices a d the push,oh well her death will not be mysterious.this is my submission

  30. 'One of the chief cause.'

I know this is not supposed to be funny, but, lol.

It seems they couldn't keep waiting for the 'major' pathologist, so, they allowed a 'minor' one carry out the autopsy.

What kind of shabby autopsy result is this?

Respiratory distress bawo! Na so respiratory distress dey take strike.

And the bruises? What were they consistent with then?

    The fall?

    Her nail?

    Scrapes?

Was her blood tested to know if she was intoxicated?

Was she checked for blunt force trauma to the head?

May have been, meanwhile you have the body to be sure.

Infact, seeing as this result is more or less funny, let's talk about Lekan.

He was at home with his wife, and she had a respiratory seizure, and he didn't run out or call for help?

Why did he run if he isn't guilty?

Okay, fine, since this wonderful result, which has several causes and one chief cause, did not exonerate him, then he's guilty of manslaughter.

Yes, he 'did not' murder his wife, but he did something to cause her death.

Ronke, may your soul rest in peace. *sigh*

  38. This is sloppy and uninspiring! An autopsy includes toxicology analysis. How can the medical personnel still be speculating after the supposed autopsy? The pathologist who should know that intoxication induced seizures can result in "respiratory seizure" didn't think it wise to carry out a toxicology analysis? Yesterday the autopsy report was inconclusive but less than 24 hours later, this is released?

Please, I tread this line with reservation because this isn't my area of expertise, but I presume that to the layman "respiratory seizure" means breathing stops? Isn't that the final stage of all deaths? Like cardiac arrest, whether caused by illness, old age, shock or whatever, once the heart stops beating isn't that cardiac arrest? Now they classified the cause of death as "respiratory seizure", can't strangulation cause asphyxiation? Isn't asphyxiation another term for "respiratory seizure"? Why didn't the pathologist rule out the other causes of "respiratory seizure" like severe blow to the head, acute fever or severe intoxication? Just like we, lawyers can use legalese to confuse and bamboozle the layman, I believe this is the medical version of what some of us do.

Maybe the autopsy result doesn't conclusively point to him as the person who murdered his wife but the circumstantial evidence of all that transpired before and soon after he allegedly left the house can still link him to the death of his wife, if not outright murder then manslaughter. Why did he lock his kids with their mum whom he assumed was taking a "nap" at the staircase landing and go on the run, refusing to return to check on the wellbeing of those young kids? Why did he allegedly call the nanny not to resume at the normal time? Why all the hue and cry about being suicidal? Why didn't he rush back home the minute he heard about the death of his wife? Why act guilty if you have nothing to hide? Why the hell was his wife's phone in his custody and having the gumption to brag about hiding in Lagos for the next 30 years? Would the reasonable man who just had a physical altercation with his wife see her laying motionless and still walk away without making sure she's alright? Did his late wife have any history of any respiratory condition? How come it was after he allegedly "slapped" her that she fell from the stairs and landed on the ground that she suffered "respiratory seizure"? That right there is manslaughter!

Assuming without conceding that all he did was slap her, if that slap resulted in an accident which caused her death, that's manslaughter and not murder because a slap will not reasonably considerably cause the death of a healthy individual but that doesn't mean his actions didn't result in her death.

Like I always say to accused persons who end up escaping justice due to technicality or lack of concrete evidence, you may beat man's justice but there is an omniscient God of justice Whose case no man can appeal and His judgment always catches up to the unrepentant offender sooner or later. Be rest assured, what goes around comes around with more intensity.‎
