Rashidi Yekini’s Children Want Inquest 4 Years After Father’s Death

Yemisi and Omoyemi, daughters of late football icon, Rashidi Yekini, have renewed their demand for an inquest into the death of their father.
Yekini died on May 4, 2012, at the age of 49.

The family said the circumstances of his death were unclear, for his two daughters, it has been difficult moving on without the exact knowledge of the cause of their father’s death.

“There is no concrete thing to say this is how he died, it is difficult; you cannot move on until you truly know that this is how he died,” the first daughter, Yemisi, said at a press conference in Lagos.

“Your father has just passed away, you ask your mother how he died and she says I don’t know how he died; I think that is the worst thing that can happen to someone,” she said.
“You don’t know whether he was killed, or he was drugged, or he was ill; there are no answers, so I will like there to be an inquisition.”

Yemisi, who is schooling at Leicester City in the UK, expressed disappointment that the relevant authorities never considered investigating Yekini’s death.
“I requested it from the moment he died but as a 17-year-old girl if I say mum, I want the police to investigate this, nobody is going to listen to me. But come to think of it, do I really have to ask before this is done. If everyone is saying Rashidi Yekini was a great footballer, he is a superstar, if he is this … he is that, why do we need to ask, why is there not one, why can Nigeria not just take this up and investigate,” Yemisi queried.

The daughters vowed to do all within their ability to immortalise their late father, appealing to everyone to join hands with them to keep the memories of the goals king alive.
One of the things the family considered to do first, is to convert Yekini’s home into a museum and also organise a befitting testimonial match for him in the years ahead.

Yemisi and Omoyemi said they hoped to use Yekini’s Ibadan house to honour their father, even though most of the laurels Yekini won as a player were allegedly carted away from the house by family members just before he died.
“I and Omoyemi come from a great home; we both have great mothers and a great father, so we are not money-hungry children. We are not here to sell the house or get the money. What we both want is the house in Ibadan, which we (with Omoyemi) shared with our father. That is the one we want,” Yemisi hinted.

“We are not bothered about the money; we’ve been able to look after ourselves. I had the idea of turning his house in Ibadan to a museum. Mr. Olanrewaju Jibril (Yekini’s lawyer) told me that when he went to the house, everything was gone: all his trophies, his pictures, awards all gone. And that’s very sad because that’s something we would have used to remember our father,” she added.

However, Yekini’s lawyer, Jibril Olanrewaju, said there was pressure from the late footballer’s family to sell the house in Ibadan.
Family members allegedly abducted the 1994 African Player of the Year few days before his death, claiming he was mentally unstable, and carted away his property.

Mr. Olanrewaju assured that Yemisi and Omoyemi had the right to possess the property of their father in Ibadan, adding that the children were also planning a testimonial game for their father.
Mr. Olanrewaju said, “For now, they can (possess the house). When someone dies without a will, usually, you collect a letter of administration and because the property belongs to them, the two mothers are the administrators to manage the estate.

“We got the letter from the Registry of the High Court of Oyo State in December. Legally they (Yekini’s children) are in actual possession, though there is pressure from the family to get the house sold. But I have been persistently blocking them from doing that.

“The kids told me that they are not happy that their dad didn’t have a testimonial match before he died and that they would want to do that in his honour. They want a platform with which they can do that. They also want most of what their dad lived for, generosity and charity work, to continue.”

Hmmm, these girls suspect foul play in their dad's death.

  1. The way the Nigerian Police and Doctors rule out foul play in deaths here is strange.

Even when you see a rope round a suicide victim's neck...an investigation should still be carried out!

They see someone without obvious wounds by the highway and conclude the person died from an accident. These and many more. It is sad!

Secondly this issue of a Man's relatives swooping in on his assets immediately he breaths his last air leaves me absolutely shocked.

We have a long way to go. I'm glad civilisation and The light is gradually creeping in.

Don't know the circumstances surrounding his death, but I loved Rashidi Yekini.

    1. Sdkers just like speaking without thinking most times, do you know how painful it is when you don't know the cause of a close relatives death? The family members might have done something seeing that there is no boy in the family to take their dad's property. They should inquest if they want to, God will be on their side and no juju will harm them. The evil ones always making people scared to react because they have powers only at night. We need to get power from the most high so we can also deal with them during the day and at night and scatter their evil alter.

    2. Abeg they should forget it. Yes forget it and just immortalise their father and uphold his legacy.

Not suggesting that nothing be done if foul play is ascertained concerning his death, and if it can be proved, but what evidence will they work with after so many years? Even with a fresh case in Nigeria it is frustrating. Especially as they aren't resident in Nigeria, and they didn't seem like a close knit family.

They sound like they were a bit distant from their father before he died. Otherwise all her comments will not be speculative. She didn't even know that her father was sick for a long time before he died. The man was abandoned, his house dilapidated, and he was forgotten by family and associates. Not until his last days when the family hurriedly took him into hiding of some sort because of embarrassment. So how do they intend to go about proving anything?

If his kids were close to him they wouldn't be in the dark. His lawyer even seemed closer to him than his relatives. They have little or no info, they do not know how he spent his last days miserably. He was even said to have been mentally unstable at some point. He was left at the mercy of his neighbours in Ibadan. They were the only family he knew until he died. His case is just a sad one.

Rather than suggesting that he was killed, which cannot be completely ruled out by the way, I on the other hand strongly think that he died of neglect abeg. Combined with his history of mental ill health and poor financial state.

In his life time his house was already overtaken by weed, not until his neighbours who love him decided to clean up the environment. Where were these kids then? Biko na dem sabi.

    4. Iphie dearie, why don't you enter the police force and also go to school and study medicine so that you will be best in the country?
You are very stupid, ok? What is your profession again? Are you in anyway comparable to your foreign counterparts?
You are a very big fool. Did you take Rashidi Yekini for autopsy? Or it is the doctors duty to go and force family members to do autopsy.
If you are refeRring to Ronkes case then you are even more stupid. Is it you that provided the rope? An autopsy report is not a hearsay report that must go with what people like you want to hear. it is based on what is seen and what is there on the body not online.
You can go back to school now and be the change you seek. Ain't no time constraint. BtW,how many autopsy reports have you even seen in Nigeria, you stay online and discuss one then you rule out every other person as incompetent.
Why don't you ask the American doctors what killed Whitney and Bobbi Christina. Wasn't people speculating there were marks on her body and she was killed by her boyfriend? Why didn't the autopsy say Whitney was murdered as reported online that she was killed by the illuminati.
What about Marylin Monroe, why wasn't the Kennedies tried? What did the autopsy say?
Once anything happens in Nigeria, you claim autonomy, it only happens here. Like I asked, what is your profession again?

  7. So sad! I think it's high time Corporate bodies in Nigeria rethink their endorsements. All these Nigeria artistes with immoral glorification shouldn't be the ones with the major deals.
We have people that have contributed their quota to the development of this country. Idling after retirement is depressing. They can be used as consultants to help source for more talents. NFF , NFA Ministry of Sports and all relevant bodied this is a wake up call to you. Remember the veterans when they are alive, not placing full page obituary after they are gone.

  9. Of course there was foul play in his death.
The stories around then was that, he slowly became withdrawn thus coming off as a recluse...started giving out his money and properties to the less privileged (albeit excessively).

Now, to his mother and whoever aided her in bundling him out of his home, that was enough to tag him a mentally unstable man...they landed in his house and bundled him to the village, probably for "prayers" and that was the last he was seen alive.

If they go on with the inquest, the worst hit would definitely be family members, it was family that carted him away not strangers or ghosts.
