1- Oshiomhole’s minimum wage increase, Greek gift –PDP— 3rd May 2016
EDO State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday described as Greek gift and politics taken too far, Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s May Day minimum wage increase from N18,000 to N25,000 for civil servants.
The party also described the increment as hasty and betrayal of trust on the part of the state government, accusing the governor of announcing the increment at a time the national leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) was negotiating a N56,000 minimum wage for civil servants.
2-Latest on the Enugu herdsmen killings— 3rd May 2016
Teachers and pupils in neighbouring communities in Uzo-Uwani LGA, Enugu State, on Wednesday fled their schools, following unconfirmed reports that the herdsmen were regrouping for a renewed attack. Students of Community Secondary School, Abbi Ugbene, took to their heels, thereby disrupting the ongoing Senior School Certificate.
It was also gathered that both public and private schools in Nimbo had been under lock since last Monday’s attack.
3- World Press Day: Dogara hails Nigerian journalists as protectors of democracy—
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, yesterday commended the Nigerian press for the role it played in the struggle for and enthronement of democracy.
In a press statement issued in Abuja by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, to mark the World Press Day, Dogara, admonished the media to be alive to its responsibility of ensuring that government adheres to the tenets of democracy.
4- Boko Haram: Army arrests suspected killer of Shuwa
THE Nigeria Army has nabbed a dreaded Boko Haram terrorist, Mohammed Sani Nafiu, who has been accused of killing Major General Mamman Shuwa (Retd) in 2012. Nafiu was arrested in Hotoro General Area of Kano State, on Sunday.
The troops also arrested a Boko Haram sub- commander, Ali Mohammed also known as Amir, aged 25. He was arrested on Saturday.
5- Edo Guber Watch: Troubling days ahead for APC
The days leading to the party primaries of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the nomination of its governorship candidate for the September 10 gubernatorial election in Edo State, are indeed very pregnant, given the turn of events in the ruling party.
Leaders and committed top functionaries of the party are apprehensive that some of the party operatives may sell out to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the last minute, given their antecedents.
Of more concern to some of the party leaders is the perceived role of some executive members of the APC, who are overtly seen to be aligning with some aspirants against the collective decision of the party executive members to be neutral to allow a level playing field for all aspirants.
6- UCL: Bayern’ll reach final –Guardiola
BAYERN coach, Pep Guardiola is confident his team will overcome Atletico’s challenge to reach the UEFA Champions League final in Milan .
Guardiola who will at the end of the season bid bye to the German champions to take charge of Manchester City, said yesterday that his wards would put everything into today’s semi final return leg to get past Atletico. Atletico is clutching a 1-0 first leg lead.
7-FG probes N213bn power sector intervention fund
POWER sector stakeholders including the generation and distribution companies as well as some government officials involved in the disborsement of the N213 billion bond granted them by the immediate past administration in 2014 following the privatisation programme, may soon be asked to explain how the intervention fund was used.
The planned probe of the power sector intervention fund followed the recent request by the electricity generation and distribution companies for an additional N309 billion loan from the Federal Government to help them stabilise power supply.
8-Super Eagles job: Foreign coaches flood Glass House with CVs
IN response to the proposed hiring of foreign technical adviser for the senior national team, the Super Eagles, foreign coaches have flooded the Glass House, the secretariat of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with their CVs and applications seeking to be recruited for the vacant job.
A reliable technical committee source who spoke to Daily Sunsports in confidence expressed shock over the development, stressing that even as the football federation was yet to formally request for applications for the position, the number of CVs received from foreign coaches was amazing.
9-Govt to pay N12.88 subsidy on PMS
THE Federal Government said it would pay subsidy on Premium Motor Spirit from the recoveries made in the first quarter of 2016. This is contained in the latest Petroleum Product Pricing
Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) template
released in Abuja. It said that between January and March, the Federal Government was able to save about N10 billion as a result of selling the product above the Expected Open Market Price.
10- The new five-year driver’s licence
The Federal Government has approved the introduction of a new driver’s licence that will have a five- year expiry period. The new licence will run side by side with the present one which has a three-year expiry date. Mr. Boboye Oyeyemi, the Federal Road Safety Commission
(FRSC) boss, disclosed that the decision on the new licence was taken at the 13th meeting of the Joint Tax Board which held recently in Kano.
