1- Kano: Youths set Gaya, Mahmoud’s houses ablaze over electoral promises— 12th May 2016
Some youths suspected to be political thugs, yesterday, set ablaze the residence of third-term Senator, Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya, in Gaya Local Government Area of Kano State.
The youths also set ablaze the campaign office and poultry farm of the House of Representatives member from the area, Alhaji Abdullahi Mahmoud.
According to an eye witness, the youths were protesting alleged failure of the two politicians to fulfill the promises they made to them during the electioneering campaigns in 2015.
2- Nigeria’s oil fortunes gone forever –Ogbeh— 12th May 2016
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh yesterday, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, declared that the days when Nigeria’s wealth was derived solely from oil and gas are gone. He said agriculture remained the only panacea to the nation’s economic problems.
The minister said these in his keynote address entitled, “Economic diversification through agriculture” at the ongoing Ogun State Investors’ Forum.
According to Ogbeh, oil and gas have outlived their purposes and no longer serve the best interest of the country with the continuing fall in prices in the world market.
3- 2016 budget’ll favour South East – Nwosu, Imo Chief of Staff— 12th May 2016
Governor Rochas Okorocha’s Chief of Staff and frontline All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain in Imo State, Chief Uche Nwosu, has said that the 2016 budget assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari recently will bring good tidings to Nigerians as he sees better days ahead. Nwosu in an exclusive interview with Daily Sun said that the budget would particularly solve most of the nagging problems of the people of the South-East, where most federal roads are dilapidated.
4- FG to ban importation of wheat, sugar, cotton, others by 2018 –Minister
The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar, on Wednesdaydisclosed that the Federal Government would ban the importation of six commodities by 2018.
Abubakar disclosed this at an interactive session with entrepreneurs and prospective investors participating in Katsina State Economic and Investment Summit in Katsina.
The Minister listed the commodities to include rice, wheat, sugar, cotton, tomato paste and processed meat.
She said Nigeria would also stop the importation of cotton and other commodities to ensure self-sufficiency and to boost the capacity of textiles and garment manufacturers locally.
5- Govt insensitive to citizens’ plight –Stakeholders
Nigerians yesterday reacted to the fuel price raise announced by the Federal Government, insisting it was in the best interest of the citizens.
In his reaction to the price increase, President of the Downstream Group of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Mr. Ken Abazie, faulted the government’s announcement, stressing that what the industry actually needs was full deregulation and not partial deregulation. Abazie said placing a ceiling on the pump price of fuel as done by the government could spark a hike in prices of products rather than crash
them.
6- Recruitment of 10, 000 policemen must follow due process –Okiro
CHAIRMAN of Police Service Commission (PSC), Chief Mike Okiro has said the method of recruiting 10,000 policemen into the Nigeria Police Force, as authorised by the Federal Government, must remain sacrosanct and uncompromising, in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s change mantra.
Okiro disclosed this in Onitsha when more than 10 civil society groups unanimously honoured him as the best outstanding PSC boss since its inception about 30 years ago.
7- Don’t let Odi repeat itself, Dickson warns militants over killing of soldiers
Governor Seriake Dickson has condemned the killing of soldiers and naval personnel in Bayelsa communities.
This is even as the Presidency, through the Defence Headquarters, ordered security operatives to fish out killers of the military men.
Four naval personnel were killed in Nembe and three soldiers at a Joint Force Military checkpoint were also killed in Foropah by suspected militants.
Dickson in statement by his Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Daniel Iworiso-Markson appealed to those behind the killings to stop and save the state from a repeat of the Odi episode.
8- Ekiti: Fayose locked out of Teaching Hospital by striking workers
The protest rocking the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido Ekiti, heightened on Wednesday as protesting workers locked Governor Ayodele Fayose out.
Some staff had staged violent protests following the death of two doctors from the hospital that were among the six doctors and a driver that died along Abuja-Kaduna road on April 24. The protesters had called for the immediate removal of the Chief Medical Director, Dr Majekodunmi Ayodele, accusing him of being responsible for the cause of the accident. But governor Fayose who rushed to the hospital on hearing about the protest, was barred from entering the premises by the protesters.
9- You’re guilty of epic hypocrisy, The Guardian of London tells UK PM
The Guardian of London has questioned the morality of the British Prime Minister David Cameron, to host a summit on corruption when the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and others recognise London as a tax haven.
The Guardian, in its Editorial yesterday, was reacting to Cameron’s comment on Nigeria and Afghanistan as two fantastically corrupt countries. Cameron made the statement during a visit to Queen Elizabeth II to mark her 90th birthday. The newspaper said though Cameron may not be corrupt, he is “certainly guilty of epic hypocrisy. So, for that matter, are Britain and the West.”
10- Yobo pleased with full deck for testimonial
Former Nigeria captain, Joseph Yobo is pleased to have secured the commitment of major international players to take part in his testimonial game later this month in Port Harcourt.
Yobo, 35, had been in Europe, visiting his old playing grounds and speaking to players expected at the game and he was happy at the overwhelming response “It has been amazing. Almost everybody wants to come and play,” he said. “My only regret is that I can’t invite everybody.” The Testimonial, on May 27, would be hosted by the Rivers State Government at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
