Expert Warns Nigerian That Low blood sugar causes sudden death

Dr Solomon Anoti, an Abuja-based medical practitioner with a private hospital, on Thursday, said low blood sugar could lead to sudden death.

Anoti told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja that low blood sugar could make patient to go into coma.
He said the condition affect mostly diabetic patients due to the lack of sugar in their system as they tried to avoid the consumption of sweet foods because
they have high sugar level.

According to him, low blood sugar can be as a result of excessive consumption of alcohol without eating well, or being more physically active than usual.
He said skipping meals and some form of medications such as insulin treatment could also cause low blood sugar.

He added that “if you are diabetic and feel dizzy, weak, feeling shaky, have headaches, pale skin, it could be an indication of low blood sugar in the body.
“Poor vision, lack of co-ordination or concentration, numbness in the mouth and tongue and feeling faint are also factors associated with low blood sugar.”

Anoti said that preventing low blood sugar was important to both diabetic and non-diabetic persons and stressed the need for regular blood sugar test to know when one was at risk in order to take prompt action.

“Exercise is another important measure to check the condition.

“Eating at least three evenly spaced meals each day with between-meals snacks as prescribed by a doctor is also important in preventing low blood sugar.”
The physician added that following a meal plan and eating meals not more than four to five hours apart could help in checking the disease and
advised patients with the ailment to always double -check their insulin and dose of diabetes medicine before taking it to avoid developing low blood sugar.

He mentioned that treatment for low blood sugar could be achieved by a doctor evaluating the medicines taken if it was caused by too much of insulin. (NAN)

    1. Yes hypoglycaemia can kill and it is advisable for all diabetic patients on medication to monitor their blood sugar level as they can easily have this problem especially when they are dieting and also taking drugs and sometimes seizures and weakness are some of the clinical signs of it, whenever you notice your blood sugar level is low you can take half bottle of Sprite to boast it.

    2. Hmnnn,My uncle collapsed this morning. He has the habbit of leaving the house without eating.
It was by luck that I decided to stop by their house,he was on his way out and slumped by the car. I just quickly pushed in IV, dextrose and he came back like in seconds.
We then went to d hospital which was like 20mins from the house.
If I wasn't there, before they even get to the hospital,he might have died or have serious brain damage.
The Brain cannot stay without glucose for a few mins, some parts will just die and can never regenerate. If it is the part that controls body movement, speech etc then the person becomes a vegetable or dump as the case may be.
That's why it is good to always have a bottle of coke, sprite or fanta once you feel that sweating, dizziness, and other signs you open and drink it before you collapse.
Once you collapse, you cannot take by mouth again, na to go hospital and then it is left for the doctor to be smart enough to do a bed side glucose test before the INJURY time elapses. Some people can even have a stroke once they fall from low blood sugar.
Infact, low blood sugar is worse than high blood sugar. It is better to be high than low.

    3. But the thing is I'm not diabetic or have any worrying health condition. I'm asthmatic but it's highly controlled. Everytime a health check is carried out on me it's only low blood sugar they noticed but my doctor says it's nothing to worry about.

  3. True that. My mum slipped into coma two weeks ago. Everyone thot it was the kidney infection she was battling , until we got to the hospital and discovered it was low blood sugar . Cos she was throwing up the previous day and wasn't eating well, so the sugar reduced. May God heal her.
