ASUU Goes On Indefinite Strike Over Subsidy Removal...

National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Professor Biodun Ogunyemi has declared indefinite strike over the increment of fuel pump price.

The union said the government should revert the oil price to N86 per litre.
The letter sent to members of the congress nationwide was read at the University of Ibadan Chapter, where the Chairman, Dr Deji Omole mobilized members to get ready for mass resistance to what he called the obnoxious and callous policy of fuel price increment.

According to Omole, the policy of subsidy removal was the most criminal ambush from the Mohammadu Buhari-led federal government to empower the rich and cripple the poor.
The ASUU boss who said that the common denominator to all Nigerians was poverty, added that the same APC government that failed to pay civil servants for months was now celebrating budget signing with the legalization of black market.

‎ASUU president in the letter entitled “Increase in Pump price of Premium Motor Spirit to N145 perlitre: Proposal for Joint Action with NLC stated that ASUU members are called upon to according to our Union’s principles, fully respect Article 2 of the Constitution of ASUU; that our Union and members shall work for the protection and advancement of the socio-economic interests of the nation. Branch Chairpersons are to conduct emergency congress meetings on Tuesday 17 May 2016 to mobilise our members for the action commencing on Wednesday. All branches of ASUU nationwide are to comply”.

Ogunyemi anchored the position on “delayed, partially paid and in most cases unpaid salaries for a number of months by state, federal and local governments, disguised retrenchment of workers, especially by State Governments, in the name of verification exercise and endless hunt for ghost workers and heavy taxation”.

    3. Anon 10:33 olodo! Where is ASUU ,where is NLC????ASUU is an affiliate of the NLC. Ok what this means in short is ASUU is under NLC. There are 2 labour centres in NIgeria. The NLC and TUC .and other unions are either registered under the NLC or TUC. But TUC is more involved with the senior staff. That is why (before the fraction in NLC)NUPENG which is the union workers in oil and gas is with NLC and PENGASSAN which is an association of senior staff workers in oil and gas is with TUC.

    4. I hate this i swear.I am supposed to graduate before july 20th. This is just sad. Why do i have a bad feeling about this strike action? Buhari is not as peace loving and calm as GEJ. Abeg people should not protest in the streets but if you must, let it be peaceful.

    2. So students off campus won't enter transport? Do you know how transporters inflate their prices and take advantage of people at bus stops during such times? Does the govt have adequate transportation? If buses decide to carry routes that are N100, N250 or more how would the students survive? Why should the govt even if they think they have good decisions why would they make such a drastic decision and not expect any revolt and go and take court injunctions up and down, even if they had good intentions, N145 is too high, and we all know that nothing that goes up comes down in this country.

  16. Nigeria of today is like , we masses are crying No tomatoes to prepare stew . we manage to get small pepper ( Rodo ) to make the stew , later we complained its too pepperish to eat , then our government now gave us grounded pepper ( Ata gungun ) to add to the stew so it will be plenty . The government then promised us in next 2 years they will produce Tomato paste for us to subdue the pepperish stew .
Seems they are blind to sense the hardship the common man will go through before their tomato paste arrived when they ( government personnel ) have Ketchup tomato paste , Heinz paste n Geisha in their kitchen . How many will live to taste the useless insensitive paste ? When frustration , hardship ,hunger , anger, poverty , hypertension , hard criminal- minded e.t.c must have taken masses to six feet underground . ... Lies upon lies from our leaders .

  27. I just feel like crying. I was really hoping for the strike. At least that way the pump price might reduce to 100 or even 110. But now, I dont know what will become of my business. And to make matters worse, we've not had light since last week. I spend the little i saved to buy fuel and nothing comes out of it. Paper that was sold for 800 has increased to 1400 per roll. Yesterday I went home with only N300 and that was because I dint eat sef. Is that what I will use to raise two kids?? And everything is now just very expensive. Today I told my kids no more Ribena only buscuit and you needed to see the way they cried. I just felt like killing myself...
