A Nigerian human trafficking victim identified as Olori Abigail who claimed to have aborted 320 pregnancies for girls, has been reported dead.
The 26-year-old was one of the victims rescued from a prostitution cartel in Libya after a Nigerian syndicate allegedly led by a couple, Alhaji Muritala Sanni and his wife Alhaja Lateefat Sanni, had trafficked more than 500 girls to Libya for prostitution.
Upon her rescue, the couple who are still on the run from law enforcement agents, were said to have reportedly threatened the victim, noting that she will die if she exposed them.
In spite of the threat; Abigail who was very ill during the interview with the Punch, revealed that she was forced to abort about 320 pregnancies for girls working for the prostitution ring in Libya.
However, shortly after this, the 26-year-old gave up the ghost.
According to the report, Abigail had also expressed fear that she would die if she exposed the Libya human trafficking syndicate.
A human rights activist and private investigator, Tunde Oshokoya, who worked with the Alliance of Rights Defenders, ARD, a nonprofit organisation based in Lagos and involved in rescuing three of the trafficked girls, disclosed Abigail’s death.
According to Oshokoya, “It is with heavy heart that we announce Abigail’s passing. She died after a brief illness she came down with while she was in Libya.
“Since we rescued her, we took her for treatment but she gave up the ghost. It is sad that ARD, an NGO took up the responsibility to rescue and rehabilitate trafficked victims without any assistance from government,” he stated.
Meanwhile, recall that it had been reported that Abigail had met with the syndicate (Alhaja Latifat and her husband) three years ago.
In her revelation to the Punch before her death, Abigail had said,“I met Alhaja Latifat and her husband in 2013 when they came to Nigeria; then I was 23-years-old. I knew them via a relative of mine, Rofel, when I was residing in Bayelsa with my siblings. Rofel invited me to Lagos; it was during the visit to Lagos that I was introduced to Alhaja Latifat who promised to take me to Italy.
“Before the journey, they said they wanted me to become an auxiliary nurse for them in Italy but unfortunately I found myself in Libya. They took me via the desert. We were about 30 that were taken to Libya from Nigeria. Since I didn’t have parents, I was only able to raise N10, 000 which the alhaja claimed was for the passport she procured for me.
“The agreement was that I will work and pay her N2.4 million once I get to Italy which included the amount she spent to take me abroad and the return on her investment and before we left Nigeria, they took us to a native doctor called Ewe in Abeokuta, Ogun State where we were made to swear an oath. It was after the oath that we were taken to Libya instead of Italy.
“Initially when I got to Libya and found out that my responsibility was to abort pregnancies for young girls, I refused but Alhaja Latifat and her husband locked me up in a room and beat me severely with a mop stick I had no option but to bulge. Each time I refused to perform abortion for any of the girls, they will lock me up and beat me.
“That was how I started assisting them to terminate unwanted pregnancies for the young girls who were working as call girls for Alhaja Latifat.
“We had girls within the ages of 10-15 working as call girls, sleeping with all sorts of men unprotected.
“Most of the girls were forced to sleep with elderly men as old as 60 years-old. Some of these girls confessed to me that they were hairdressing apprentices and fashion designers before they were deceived to come to Libya to work as prostitutes.
“Any of the girls who refused to work, they will beat her up. Some of the girls who attempted to escape got into more trouble as they were resold to other traffickers in Libya.
“My main responsibility was to carry out abortion for the girls forced into prostitution. By my calculation, I would have aborted 320 pregnancies in the process. They built instrument which I used to perform the abortion on the girls.
“If a pregnancy was about a month, and the girl in question notified Alhaja Latifat about the development, the Alhaja Alhaja will not allow me to abort the baby till the pregnancy was about four or five months old.
“Apart from carrying out abortions, I also performed the job of a physician to the girls. They had about three houses which were used as brothels to house the girls who worked as call girls. I resided in one of the brothels called New York. The second was called White House. I can’t remember the name of the third one.
“I worked for the alhaja for about three years and I was able to raise the amount from the abortion I was performing on the girls and the money I got from my male friends who were into armed robbery in Libya. Like the call girls, I was not allowed to operate a bank account. Since I didn’t operate any bank account, the money I earned was kept with Alhaja Latifat.
“Within two years I was able to pay the N2.4m agreed amount on the contract and also give her N1.5M which I kept with her as my personal savings.
“Meanwhile, trouble started after I demanded that she gives me back my N1.5m which was with her as I wanted to return to Nigeria. Immediately after I demanded for my money, this strange sickness started. I began to grow thin and lose weight. And then skin rashes began to appear all over my body. Look at me I am now a shadow of myself.
“I don’t know what is wrong with me. I feel very weak too. I was rescued alongside two other girls weeks after Basirat and Omobolanle were rescued through an NGO, Alliance for Rights Defender, owned by human activists and lawyer, Mr. Ojay Akinwale.
“Mr Akinwale has been the one working with operatives of the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP). Since I was rescued and brought back to Nigeria, Alliance for Rights Defender has been instrumental to providing medical care for me.
“I want to get well first and I also want the Federal Government to investigate Alhaja Latifat, her husband and others running this human trafficking as a family business by taking advantage of young girls from indigent families,” the victim had disclosed shortly before her death.

DeleteAnon 10:52 how did u know she died from AIDS, Big mouth or wreckless mouth! Which one are u???
DeleteStella, please post the link of where her pictures came out in the last post you did when she just returned.
DeleteIt was very obvious she already had AIDS(not HIV), she already had aids defining symptoms kaposi sarcoma (black bumps on her skin) she was so emaciated with papupar pruritic rashes on her body. I knew it won't be long before she died.
One major issue with Nigeria is LIES and covering up LIES. What are they hiding it for? If you don't even accept that you have HIV, how can you go for treatment or take treatment seriously.
Everyday, Nigerians die of HIV but instead of them to accept what they have, they will say it is an attack or they will blame the hospital for not knowing what they are doing.
Thank God you are not blaming any hospital this time.
I still keep asking, WHERE are all the people that die of AIDS in Nigeria?
So she won't be able to testify against the woman in court nauu? If they knew she had aids, they would have hastened the trial or gotten a video of her statement.
DeleteEyah,so she eventually died,Rip
ReplyDeleteCoz they didn't make any spiritual move for her.

ReplyDeleteTrafficking is one of the biggest illegal money making ventures in the world. Their network is massive. Before these girls are taken, they undergo a lot in the hands of native doctors, remember that lady from Spain who was bathed with acid by her native doctors wife. Trafficking is not a one man business.
ReplyDeleteFirst, you have the Madam that will lure them. They are usually not told outright that is prostitution they will be embarking on. They are promised a better life maybe as a sales girl or nanny in any foreign country. The Madam gives the parents lots of money, the parents convinces them to go.
Second stage...The Madam takes the girl to another Madam's house in Nigeria, money is exchanged. The girl is treated well, she starts working as a nanny to her children as practice thinking that is what she is going to do there.
Third stage...The second Madam contract someone to prepare illegal travel document for the girl. Her name and date of birth is changed. When that is done, the girl is transferred to another house where she will meet girls of her age usually teenagers, they are forced to stay there and locked up. Then the girls are taken to a native doctor, who will threaten them, put marks on them, give them something to drink, they will all swear not to talk.
Fourth stage...one of the girls will be selected to embark on a journey with a man and a woman that will probably claim to be husband and wife. They don't take all the girls at the same time because they don't want to attract suspicions from people. The girls will claim to be their daughter.
Fifth stage... They usually follow illegal routes from Edo/Lagos to Kano to Kastina to Agadez to libya through the dessert. They will stop at Libya. In Libya, they already have someone waiting for them. Now, the fake husband and wife will return back to Nigeria, while the person in charge in Libya takes over. If their destination is Libya, then the girls will be forcefully engaged in prostitution. These girls are drugged and coerced to sleep with men, the men pay their charges to the person in charge. The girls are also locked up and threatened.
If their destination is Italy, then after small prostitution in Libya where the person in charge makes small money, they will bribe their way to enter a boat going to Italy. In Italy, they have someone else in charge.
As you can see, it is a massive network involved. Although they change their manner of operatives and routes from time to time, the formula remains same. Some even obtain real documents for their victim and fly them out properly.
Majority of the girls are usually from Edo state, calabar and Akwa Ibom. The funny part of it is, their parents are in support of them being trafficked. It is a competition in Edo state to have one of your relatives abroad whether legal or illegal. Even when the girls come back to Nigeria and are rehabilitated, they still live in fear because most times the network of people who captured them are still watching.
The controversial part of it all is, some of these NGOS forming to rehabilitate victims of trafficking are one of the network of traffickers. It is Nigeria so no one checks them.
Hmmmmmmmmmm
DeleteThose girls know what they are in for. They usually start confessing when the job gets too tough for them, they want papers or asylum or the get ill from HIV. I don't feel any pity for them...with all the awareness and warning in the news the still follow one Aunty to Europe.
DeleteWish she asked God dir forgiveness before she passed on. Rip madam.
ReplyDeleteWish she asked God for forgiveness before she passed on. Rip madam.
