UNIPORT Students Go Wild As SARS Kill Faculty President Peter Ofurum.

UNIPORT RIOT UPDATE...

BLOG VISITOR SITUATION REPORT

''Stella, the vc of the university of port-harcourt is the most hard hearted man I have ever seen. He closed down the school portal and closed payment and said if you haven't paid your fees, you won't write your exams and because of that aggrieved students staged a peaceful protest begging this man to let them write exams since this is first semester that they will eventually pay before second semester e‎nds but he refused .

instead he called police people who came and refused to disturb the students because students had already sent info to the police station telling them of the protest. Later on towards afternoon, some other form of policemen called SARS came and opened fire on students and they killed Peter Ofurum, a faculty President and out of that anger students went around destroying school properties.

LATE PETER OFURUM.

As I write this uniport is on fire and the sch management has sent us on 1month holiday. Stella lives have been lost because of one wicked man. Imagine

Now to other issues, I have been on this blog since 2years or more now and I have never seen the level of lack of sympathy I saw today. Uniport is a federal sch where we pay sch fees of 45-60k depending on the faculty and new students pay 100 for sch fees, 30k for acceptance and 20k for accomodation which they hardly give but still make it compulsory for all to pay.

Imagine in this hardship how can people afford 45k to pay for sch fees when their parents have not been paid salaries. Let's be compassionate for Christ's sake.

Vc LALE for all the lives lost today because of your wickedness, God will judge you. Please if you are a UNIPORT student run from ALUU and CHOBA o..they robbed the living daylight out of ALUU last night and they will still do same today.

More updates will be posted as it comes in.....

I was a student of uniport when our SUG president dragged the school/VC to court and won the case. You cannot die for nothing.
I know students that will not pay school fees till they get to final year and if they don't have atleast a 3rd class, they will never pay again.
It is wrong for you not to pay school fees and be protesting. The fact that you were allowed to attend lectures first without paying is already enough good done. This attitude of Nigerians is very bad, I have seen where students protest, aint nothing peaceful about that.
Rivers state believe it or not is a very violent place, YES and it has nothing to do with school fees or The VC.
Burial, they carry Machete, convocation guns, matriculation guns, and you say peaceful protests. While they protest, don't they rob and molest car users and passersby?

Now the robberies going on in Choba and ALUU, is it the VC that is carrying them out. Rest in Peace Peter, students be careful, Nigerian Youths shun Violence.
Twitter Jamming is different from real bullets! A word is enough for the wise.

    3. I agree with you 23.28, IT IS NOT WORTH IT! His parents will be in deep pain, that words will not be able to express or heal them, except God comforts them! His soul rest in peace.

When in school, I never joined any riot. I will go off campus to stay with my friend in her parents house. Because, I know it is a sheer waste of time, resources, energy and money!

UNI PORT students will suffer for this dearly, that they will be the same people to beg for the school to be re-opened! One month will go into many months because of the destruction and deaths!

WHEN WILL NIGERIAN STUDENTS LEARN THAT RIOTS AND VIOLENCE NEVER PAYS?

  2. This is just crap. Even in Canada when students don't pay they are not allowed to register for classes nor see their previous results. There is always an increase in Tuition every year. What happened to having a student body that can represent and talk to authorities without all this drama? Reasons why Nigeria will still be backward. Peaceful protest my foot

    1. A beg chile. Uniport is know for this. Even if you pay all your fees, when it's time to collect your certificate the thieves will still make u pay money. I graduated from there and I know what am talking about. It's a pity

    2. Exactly! An average Nigerian is not even humble yet you don't have money for school fees. Why will you wait for the portal to be closed before paying your fees.
In developed countries, going to school is not by force. If you don't have money, then defer and continue when you can.
You cannot win this case because someone is dead. It was preventable. Student protests usually escalates. You go to school, you don't wanna pay. You go to hospital, you don't wanna pay. Yet you invest in expensive phones, clothing, cars etc
I went to uniport and I have never seen any university that the students drive the kind of cars the drive.
As at 2005, almost every student has an AC in their rooms, fully furnished sound system and cars everywhere. Boys buy cars for their girlfriends. Big cars o and tear rubber. Yet they won't pay school fees, when they get to final year, they will pay someone in the admin 150k to write off the bills for them.

We will never grow as a country if we don't get things right.

    3. Common shut your dirty mouth! Lives were lost and you dare term it 'drama'? Are you mad?
Students also held a peaceful protest in Benue State University over the almost 100% school fees increment today, thankfully no life was lost why should Uniport be different? Why will you even compare Nigeria to Canada with the current economy status in Nigeria. Govt is increasing tariffs all round school fees, Nepa etc without even paying their workers for months talk more increasing their salaries to march up with the unnecessary increment. Imagine Benue State Governor imposing tax on people that hawk things in The market even pure water sellers are being forced to pay tax and you are here yearning dust. If one of the persons that were killed today happens to be your relative will you repeat their trash you just vormitted here

    5. You are an idiot. In Canada, no worker is owed even 1hr wage. Government workers are being owed salaries of several months and you expect them to pay their children's fees promptly.

      Delete
    6. Not being allowed to register or see previous results is quite different from not being allowed to take exams after attending all lectures, tests and practical classes.Analyse the situation correctly.

      Delete
    7. It isnt crap. You need to understand the situation The fees were increased. Students were allowed to register. Because the school needs the money they allow students to continue classes without paying whilst keeping the portal open in the hope that the students will pay the INCREASED fees before the semester ended. That was the error. By the time semester ended, only a handfull of students had paid. So the decision to exclude those who hadnt paid from sitting the exams. The ERROR was in allowing students register without payment. But the school knows that if that isnt done a lot of programs will not run as the classes will have very few students making such programs non viable. The best decision would have been to allow them sit for the exams and withhold their results. Simple. He would have got them to pay which is what he really wanted afterall.

      Delete
    8. In Canada students have access to student loans. They pay back after completing their education. international students pay almost five times what Canadian nationals pay. You chose to come to their couuntry. So you pay or you dont register. Or your results are withheld. Its not the same at all in Nigeria.

Do the students know the pressure he was under that he insisted they pay before exam? Why do we have student union if not for this type of problem? A compromise will be made. Now souls lost, parents in unbearable pain, a preventable death! I am crying and angry the same time!

  8. OMG.. That's why I dread any form of protest. There is no such thing as a peaceful protest in Nigeria.
See the life of a young man with promising future has been cut short now.
This is the very same reason we don't protest in my school. We just swallow whatever they throw our way. Anytime there is any form of protest, someone must die.
We still have a very long way to go in Nigeria.
Rip Peter, you're a true hero.
    Your legacy will live on.

  9. The funniest thing is the school would probably not revise the fees.
Someone has died for absolutely nothing.
Why would you as a student join a protest for whatever reason. Have you asked your parents for money and they didn't pay? Why are we always fond of running faster than our shadow.
It's a federal university so why aren't the students tendering their displeasure to the Federal government. Why take laws into your own hands knowing that we are a lawless country of accidental discharge and the likes.
I'd rather grumble in my bedroom than die for people who wouldn't remember me after I am gone.
May the young man who died today rest in peace but it should be a lesson to the rest of you. Not everytime fight and if someone or a friend comes to drag you to join say no. They should go and come.
Just last year these same uniport students rough handled my friend who works in UPTH or whatever it is they call their teaching hospital. They beat him up just because he was trying to leave the hospital premises during one of their riots.
Mind you the hospital has been on strike since last week, they haven't been paid but they aren't vandalising hospital property yet like you students.

People has gone to university before you little children, we have seen all these things.
No such thing as peaceful protest. Your parents are not complaining, the fact is that most of them has spent the money their parents gave them for fees, some of them are looking for ways to boycott exams, some are looking for ways to cause anarchy so they can steal.
If you read your code of conduct in that Uniport student manual that you accepted the terms and conditions there, you will understand that there are many ways to deal with situations.
These same students beat up lecturers and their fellow students(the ones that managed to pay) calling them saboteurs.
Go to school and read! No! Riot, they will all come out.
How can someone even have the mind to carry stone and shatter windscreen of a car that he /she cannot afford because you are protesting for 45k, you destroy lives and properties worth millions. Well make una get una money together or look for another school.

It's the school management's discretion to tamper justice with mercy but if they choose to enforce it, you have no option than to pay. If there's a compulsory fee for accommodation an you're not get the accommodation then your SUG is jacked up coz they can actually negotiate with school management to get accommodation or remove the fees.

    1. The vc called in Sars. He should take the blame. When this kind of thing happened in LASU the VC was removed. You dont incite students this way. You could allow them sit for exams and withhold results of those who have not paid. The VC was highhanded. He takes the blame. He chose the action. And he chose the consequence. There are better ways of managing students. In Canada it is already a rule that is known and you have payment plan options. You dont hike school fees and then immediately mete out punitive measures. There are lots of students who are the ones struggling to pay their own fees. Not parents. So the VC didnt think this through at all. Was this a Senate decision? Was it debated at Senate level?? He needs to take the fall for this. Period.

Aon an average, they pay 70 to 150k for sorting courses in that school. 80percent of businesses in that school are owned by students, school buses, cafeteria, saloons, bars, supermarkets. 80% of the students live off campus, and you will hardly see a room without AC, flat screen, audio sets that are deafening.

And if there are new school fees must students be refused exams? Is that the only administrative way to handle the issue? I have taught in two universities for over 28 yrs. I have seen VCs cone and go. This kind of method in handling school fees hike has never worked in ANY instituiton. There are better ways of handling a school fees hike than to threaten students with examination refusal. This VC has no skills at all and is either inexperienced or plain high handed. 20. Na wah o!

I am totally against the killing of students by the armed men. That's wickedness and inhumanity!

I can remember years ago, when we protested because of lack of some basic amenities in school, it was peaceful, till the police came.
    But nobody was killed. Why?

Because they used RUBBER PELLETS and TEAR GAS only. The guys so damaged their armoured tanks with stones eh.

And kept passing the canisters of tear gas to and fro. They throw over the fence, a student walks up and throws it back..lol. They weren't even allowed to come inside the school compound. We were asked to vacate before 6pm.

So,i'm finding it ludicrous that a VC, knowing how these things usually turn out, and probably being a father himself, allowed armed men to come take care of such a situation. May heaven forgive you, Prof.

Then, about the protest, economic hardship or not, fees must be paid. Everyone is affected, and lecturers aren't running a charity organisation.
When I was in uni, even now, there's a stipulated duration for registering your courses online, and if you don't register them before the portal closes, that is it. You quietly go home, and wait for the next session.

I don't understand why students still take to the streets because of stuff like this, especially, knowing that they'll be the ones affected, and they'll still pay the fees, and even for damages.

Well, it's a federal school, but in this same Nigeria, some state schools pay almost #200 k per session, and heads have not rolled.

My own advice is, when protests like this start, carry your kaya, and leave the school premises. Protests like this, seldom change anything, and the dead would have died in vain.

  24. What a tragic situation! The students should have registered their grievances through the student union body. But then again, even if they did, lack of empathy and consideration for our kind have taken over our sense of being, hence those in authority showcase despicable level of high handedness and total disregard for their subjects. Such could be the case in this scenario. However, I still believe that there are better ways to approach this situation without resorting to destruction of properties. At the end of the day, students will always be at the receiving end. Times are indeed hard and I understand the students plight. However, they are going about it the wrong way. It's high time we changed our brashness and aggressive disposition as a people. It doesn't provide solutions.

  29. Honey your Vice Chancellor is not wicked, he is being just. You can plead but he has the right to refuse. Let us learn to separate sentiments from justice in Nigeria. That is why we are lawless.
If an institution is not run on charity, how do you write exams when you haven't paid fees? You wanna reap where you haven't sowed.
Every university is run on fees, that money is necessary for smooth operations.
For instance, if you can't afford rent, you get kicked out. you cannot 'plead' with Landlords mosttimes.
It is sad that the fees is high, and that the country is corrupt and things are hard
But all over the world, you can't write exams without paying fees. Even in primary schools. There are fees deadlines, after which you will be unregistered if you haven't paid. And you can't protest about that - it is the Law.
The students were foolish in protesting or rioting, cos in the end it's their loss. Who died? A student. Who loses when properties are destroyed? The students. You are destroying equipments bought for you, and your fees might be increased again to replace them all. So the VC didn't cause the death of the young man, his fellow students did.

The crowd is always faceless and violent, but the crowd is a big coward.

    Stop Youth Violence.
    Speak, not fight.
    It never pays.

  30. Ermm queen of the blog abeg shut up your mouth if you don't know what to say. So if one person has money dose that mean that everybody has money? Even with all the resources Nigeria has they still say we love below poverty level because the people that have the money are less than those who Dosent have. People like you self did not pay school fees at all that's why you would say those crap because if you went to uniport you would know that the school treats students like ATM so just carry your illiteracy to bed. Nonsense

  33. It's only in Nigeria force men who would be deployed with ammunition to go quell a peaceful protest. What ever happened to blanks and tear gas?

It's funny how the school is quick to tell you "military men cannot be allowed to make arrest on campus when there's campus security" when it's convenient for them.
I just feel so sad for his friends and parents.

Is everybody in the school from the same social/financial strata. Chicken change? Social media really helps people deceive themselves

  36. Funny the way people comment n see things... you call 45k ordinary because you are privileged abi? when I was a student in uniport, I know how many of my classmates had to do odd jobs just to pay their fees. @queen of the blog..one student throwing around money doesn't mean all students are capable. Truth is if this students can afford the fees, they would have probably gone to a private uni instead.
It has always been uniport style not to bother students about fees but fees must be paid before convocation, later they started the 50% fee late payment penalty which was cool and accepted. Why bring a new policy which will make lots of students have extra yr? Why should the VC order the portals closed? Why didn't he just leave the late payment penalty? Besides even if the school authorities felt this policy should be introduced, couldn't it have been introduced gradually with lots of orientation??
I watched the live videos of what happened.. why did SARS shoot at unarmed students that were dancing on the blocked road? Is it right? Why did SARS follow and arrest the students that carried the dead body to AIT if they think they didn't do wrong, they didn't want the real truth to get to the media. Stella have you watched the videos?
Personally, I don't support the students burning n destroying school properties because of the dead chap because they'll eventually end up paying more for the repairs but I think the whole closing of portal issue/policy should be stopped and the school fees reduced. 45k is for some depts. Sure some depts pay more.. it's just not right. Better universities like Unilag,OAU, etc don't pay as much and it's not as if the facilities are working..
It's just not right to shoot at unarmed students. Teargas alone would have sent them running. Is there any justifiable reason to shoot at unarmed students??
Stella, don't know if you have gotten the raw videos, they were dancing on the road, why shoot at them? Police was there, Army was there dem no shoot oo na SARS reach there start to shoot anyhow. Other student sustained gun shot wounds too. I hope they survive. It is well ooo.

  37. If you do not pay your school fees why do you actually expect to take your final exam??? I'm actually confused! Where do they do that?? It's a school not a charity organization. This happens everywhere in abroad. You don't pay for a course you get dropped towards the end of the semester.
When youths were meant to protest about important things they didn't. Silly as people.

  39. Slave and beast of this blog, only 20% of Uniport students live comfortably in school environs 15% runs girls and yahoo boys and 5% rich kids... Do you know how many orphans are in Uniport? Fatherless children? My mum is a nurse and midwife under mdg and she hasn't been paid since August 2014.If my bro didn't start a biz for me last year, I wouldn't have paid by now. The struggles we go through everyday in Uniport is out of this world. So please spare me the iron hand bullshit. Didn't you read this piece properly? Our main bone of contention is that students who didn't pay their fees won't be able to write first semester exams. Why did lale not wait until 2nd semester to enforce this new law? If 90% of students have paid(according to our beast vc), why discriminate against the 10% that hasn't paid? Madam slave of this blog, oga that celebrated his bday with a million bucks na gee guy confirmed so stfu bitch and reference responsible students. Did he tell you he hasn't paid his fees? You're just so shallow

  41. RIP to the victims.

The thing the students rioting fail to realize is that ALL the students will be made to pay for all the damaged properties before school resumes so at the end of the day, they just increased their fees astronomically. In this harsh economy, to replace those properties which we know will have padded estimate will not be funny.

Dialogue should always be the preferred option.

  42. If truly some students died, may their souls rest in peace! Very sad!

But the truth be told, qualitative education is not cheap - the reason why our public educational institutions, from primary to University, are glorified learning places. The usual talk of government fully funding primary and secondary schools is not sustainable. Also, where in the world do university undergraduates pay such pittance as tuition and accommodation fees? The normal situation is for students' loans to be given to indigent students and repayments are done when he or she graduates and starts working; and the students work part time and during holidays to take care of their upkeep. Good quality education is never cheap! So sad every public institution in Nigeria, from health to education to power/energy to transportation, has broken down.

The result of poor quality education is the message written by that Uniport undergraduate - very poor tenses and sentences' construction. I can't believe an undergraduate wrote that; and same guy will graduate and say there is unemployment - you can't get a job with such poor writing skills- how will the application letter be written?

  44. In Nigeria every skilled and experienced Vice Chancellor knows that school fees hike will first be resisted by students. So they take it slowly. Gentle information dissemination. Gradual introduction. You think it through well. And you strategise. New students fees increase. Old students continue paying old fees. Next year we will increase all fees. It takes careful planning because its a sensitive issue in a country where economic problems exist. You dont excercise your muscle simply because you have it! And every experienced VC or Rector knows that the last thing to do is to call mobile police with live ammunition. It always goes wrong. This was really poor administrative handling. Poor management

  46. I bet the parents of most of these silly students leading these protests must have given them their school fees but they squander it, only to come later to instigate such protests. I'm very sure the late Peter wasn't even owing school fees. No matter the positions we hold in whatever/whichever organisations or society, let us as humans choose our battles wisely. You fight some, leave some. RIP Peter!

  47. Hello Stella,

I usually do not post comments on blogs but as an ardent reader of your blog i believe you should clarify issues before passing judgement.

I enrolled to study Mass Communication in 2003 at the University of Port-Harcourt. The registration and school Fees at the time was about 65 thousand Naira. Now this was over 12years ago. I grew up on Campus with my Uncle and his family and i know what the school environment looks like. There is no other federal University that has power supply like the University of Port-Harcourt.

Secondly, sometime late last year, Prof Lale invited all parents, lecturers and members of the governing council to a meeting where the school fees and payment methods were discussed in details, most parents were shocked by the revelations at this meeting. their children had been collecting over 60k for fees per semester when in actual sense the school fees was for each year. Everyone agreed to an ideal payment method before the meeting came to a close. That is what i am baffled by the turn of things and the insults being rained on an innocent man.

The university security management heard that the students were planning to protest and messages were sent out to all students via their churches on Sunday warning them against this protest. However, not everyone heeded this advise. Also the allegation that the students became violent after one of them was killed is all lies.

During their protect, they went into the ICT building and broke computers, smashed cars of lecturers, burnt down security posts and destroyed buildings. It wasn't until the issue escalated that security operatives were alerted to come and calm the situation.

Have you asked yourself why no parent has come up to outrightly condemn the VC and the school fees.

Nevertheless, my heart goes out to all injured students and the family of the deceased. Please students violence is never a solution, it only yields violent results.

    Please verify this story.

  48. Rest in Peace slain students of Uniport. All of you ranting here are just being unnecessarily judgmental, why should the VC close the portal and asked students not to write exams. That's wickedness. I attended Uniport. Allow the students to write their exams, some people hustle to go to school, during holidays they take up menial jobs to make money for school. Why wont the authorities wait till clearance before NYSC. If you dont cleared you wont get ypur certificate or go for NYSC. During that time Exams and Records will be the last, you will first be cleared by your department, faculty and finally Exams and Records. Some of you talking trash here doesnt know what it means going to School. The VC is wicked. Allow then write their exams and wait for them during Clearance. I missed paying my school fees some years, because we had just lost my dad, everything was tied up in courts, we had just relocated cos of popise's job, mumise was a house wife, i wrote my exams and so did my brothers. During Clearance mumise's business was beginning to boom, some of the houses had reasonable tenants, my mum had sold all the cars and almost all her singles(the most painful for me cos she is from Delta, their singles wrappers are the ish) immediately the court released them. So i was cleared and went for service. In Nigeria authorities listen to only violence.
