A video showing two officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) demanding bribes from Nigerians has been sent to Thecable.ng and uploaded on video-sharing website, YouTube.
Titled ‘Corruption Report Nigeria’ and published on Monday, the scene of the alleged crime is the Port Harcourt airport in Port Harcourt, capital of Rivers state.
A hidden camera with which the act was filmed showed two Customs officers seated on either side of a desk, while three people stood sideways, against the wall.
The two officers inspect some papers; and one of them, raising his voice at one of the three people in the room, says: “Where the thing now? E dey hard you to bring?”
After counting what looked like eight N1,000 notes, the officer returns it in annoyance, saying: “Take! Take!!!”
When the fellow refuses to collect the money, the officer squeezes it into his hands, and adds: “You’re not ready;anybody wey no wan cooperate, we go leave am.”
The officer eventually walks out; but with the recording going blank for a few seconds, it was unclear exactly how much he left with.
This is not the first time that incidents of bribery and corruption have been exposed in the Customs.
In December 2015, an undercover investigation by TheCable revealed series of sharp practices involving Customs officials, as well as other border and security agencies, clearing agents, and banks.

They should be dismissed, people needs those positions that they are
ReplyDeleteYea, exactly what was narrated is what the video explains. They prolly agreed a certain amount and the money wasn't enough so the official refused it.
DeleteBut the question is, if the officers on this desk are assigned to collect payments and issue receipts normally? If their job description allows them receive money from people, then it may be hard to convince people that what the man collected here is bribe. Not unless they have no business receiving any form of payment from the public, would this video implicate them. Just saying
Custom officers statutorily collect revenue for on behalf of the govt. What this officer does might be on the counter assessment and payment. It' not certain that its a bribe
DeleteI saw the bribe part very clear. I guess they confiscated their good and they are demanding for money.
ReplyDeletePoor video.
ReplyDeleteNa today, we all know dt all these government officials take bribes.
ReplyDeleteMaybe deir goods were seized, dts why dey were bribing d custom officers to get back deir goods.
They should go to NDDC and see corruption in its fullest glory.
ReplyDeleteThis one small. Custom officers their names are corruptions, corrptia, corrupgy
Hahahahahaha...
DeleteImmigration and NDLEA are worse!...
Infact, all the uniformed officers in Nigeria are all the same...
Kworoption is their name!,..
The richest officers are not found in the police force or the airforce as people believe, but rather, the richest are found in the customs. Yep, you won't believe how much the corrupt ones amongst them are worth. My oh my... Those people make huge monies from collecting daily bribe from the citizenry.
DeleteEnd time bribery & kwarupshun
ReplyDeleteIntegrity gone down the drain.
ReplyDeleteJust negodu! It's not enough to "always" be caught on camera. Will the appropriate sanctions be meted out to defaulting officers?
ReplyDeleteGood for them
ReplyDeleteBursted
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's not enough to be caught on camera but getting evidence first before trying to make any case. Immigration extorted me the first time I travelled and they are still going to pay for it cos I tend to invest in spy camera. It maybe another group I will get but that will be good enough.
