RE- Nigerian Lady Brutalised, Humiliated And Dehumanised At The Passport Office In Abeokuta

OMG!!!

Thank you for your wonderful platform madam.

I read the story of that Nigerian lady who was brutalised, humiliated and dehumanised at the passport office in Abeokuta and I was utterly gutted. I write to tell my own disappointing experience on the corrupt practices going on at the passport office in Alausa, Ikeja. This woman's sad story has given me the energy to write this.

As soon as you are sighted, you will be approached by an immigration officer, who pretend to be nice, asking you the type of service you require. They do this simply because they see you as a cash cow (or maga) and want to make money off you. Now, assuming you know a particular officer, as in my case, he/she will send someone in mufti (they usually have a small messenger bag across their shoulder) to give you the form to fill. After this, he collects the filled form and fee, which is usually and absurdly above the authorised fee of N15,000 given on the website. I used the word ‘usually’ because every person I eavesdropped on paid above the authorised fee. I paid N26,000 in cash for a 32-page passport without a receipt (this applied to every person who paid in cash) and I was glad I paid that amount because a friend had told me about someone who paid above N32,000. Though I was pained because I knew the authorised fee before going. I tell you this, in that building, there is no office/desk where one can make payment. All of this is done outside the building but right inside the compound. Again, there is nothing like first come, first served. It is just a matter of how the officer you are connected with act on your file.

When you enter the room where they are to take your capture and digital signature, you are given your file to cross check for any error. While checking my file, my brother notified me of these things: (1) the actual total amount printed was N17,600 and it showed I paid using ‘visa’ (2) my email address which I filled out had been changed to someone else's (3) my mobile number also had been changed to that of the officer who I went through. This meant that I was only able to confirm my collection date through this officer.

Another annoying part was that out of the three officers who were to attend to us, just one officer was available because one was busy eating hot food (one can imagine the inconvenience of the smell) and the other was -- can't really remember exactly but she was also eating intermittently, all this happening while it was still morning.

The confusing part is that quite a large number of the officers attend morning devotion. You would see them rushing down to the back to partake in the praise, worship and prayers  before the opening hour. Though, I do not know if all of them in that very office are part of this corruption but for those who are involved (whether you do attend that devotion or not), kindly search the scriptures on what it says about the wicked, ungodly, unrighteous, sinners. I will help you with some:

(1) Woe to those who [seek to] hide deep from the Lord their counsel, whose deeds are in the dark, and who say, Who sees us? Who knows us?” Isaiah 29:15 AMP
(2) The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination, hateful and exceedingly offensive to the Lord, but the prayer of the upright is His delight! [Isa. 1:11; Jer. 6:20; Amos 5:22.]” Proverbs 15:8 AMP
(3) “Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him.” Isaiah 3:10-11 KJV
(4) The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.” Proverbs 3:33 KJV
(5) “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.” Psalms 7:11 KJV
(6) Assuredly [I pledge it] the wicked shall not go unpunished, but the multitude of the [uncompromisingly] righteous shall be delivered.” Proverbs 11:21 AMP
(7) “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Galatians 6:7 KJV

“That though the wicked spring up like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to be destroyed forever.” Psalm 92:7 AMP

May God give us all the grace to be upright.

Thank you once more madam.

    2. @ Fab Mum... I'm not generalizing or rejoicing at other people's misery nor making jest of people's death but it's a resounding experience of what millions of helpless Nigerians go through in the hands of some medical doctors in Nigeria. RIP to the deceased

  4. I think what most people were outraged about is the beating d woman got.
I don't think they will just descend on her and beat her mercilessly like dat if she hadn't been rude to them.

    1. So being rude to them warrants the beating? Seriously? Which civilization are you from?

    3. James has the mentality of the typical Nigerian. Barbaric and crude. So do you beat men who are rude to you? What sort of home did you grow up in that you think it is ok to beat anyone just because? Fathers please be better examples.

  6. Ah ah!!! I thought they harrased and beat this one too...madam,this is d usual practice naa..almost half of Nigerians who has Intl passports obtained it this way. Wetin come be this ya epistle,if u were not harrased??? I got mine same way at d festac office 3yrs ago. Even u,urself is guilty because u knew d normal way to go which is paying through d bank and providing all those necessary documents in ur file and might take u up to 1yr to get ur passport but u chose d sharp sharp way. So why are u quoting Bible and complaining??? Both d giver of bribe and bribe collectors are guilty!!!

    2. I Sent The Article Above

I was not aware of the right procedure which, honestly, is my fault and the service I got was not express because my collection date was 2 weeks from the date of application. No one would willingly allow himself/ herself be made a cash cow. Besides, why would I complain if I know I am jumping queue; you have to do wrong to achieve this hence would not have quoted 8 (eight) scriptural verses.
The first time I put in an application was in secondary school and I don't remember how it went because I had a guardian with me. My visit to the passport office was the first time I would renew my passport in Nigeria.
You know some of us have this people in the family who tend to know everything and their conviction can be so strong. I went online to google the amount when he told me he doesn't know the current application fee. Now, I know better.
The experience I had was strange to me.

Thank you for pointing that out for me to clarify.

  7. Passport Officers in Nigeria are all the same. i had experience when i went for my passport it was very traumatizing. i got to know later that the officer i was referred to was, a distant relative, still he collected almost 30k from me and while he was collecting money other officer were angry that i did not giving them enough money. can u imagine.

i just kept quite to get what i want first and when they asked me were i work, i told them, they collected my phone number for job for the relatives i kept quite thereafter i deleted their numbers and when they call me i told them i don't know them.

  8. My anger rests on the physical assault she received from those animals. It was highly unnecessary! If she was armed like I always am, trust me those jerks won't even touch her with a 10 feet pole. Instead of taking their frustrations out on the government, they decided to pounce on a defenseless woman. No matter her level of rudeness, they had absolutely no right to beat her to that extent. Nigerians hate themselves. And that's one of the major problems of the black race. Self hatred!

  9. It's in all the immigration offices in Nigeria. I don't understand at all, it's only God that can save us from evil doers, n d worst is that they will still be abusing d president when they are doing worse in dia little offices

  12. But there are right ways of doing this things na. Only that it's not "express" You are also part of the sin if you were aware of the right procedure before paying to those people in mufti.

  13. No be today. It happens at all the passport offices. Festac o, ikoyi o. It's the same racket.
    I paid 35k for a 64 page passport.

What I don't understand is the no of officers attached to the offices not doing anything but just walking up and down looking for new scapegoats.
I have never submitted a document to obtain a passport. Everything is done by the officer and I wonder what if am not a Nigerian, is this how it's easy to obtain our passport?
Everything in Nigeria is complicated and so it makes corruption thrive easily because they will so fraustrate you if you think you are smart and can do it yourself.

Same story with obtaining a drivers license.

  20. I paid 35k for 32 page passport cos i was told the lesser one isnt available in their abuja office. I had to go to gwagwalada to capture, though i got mine in 24hrs.
But the thing is, i gave the guy cash but he paid online with his own card before i came back from the atm. In his words, he was just helping me.
When you come from a foreign trip, customs will harass you cos you have more than 2 bags, if there are 2 big bags, they will say its commercial.
When i came back frm l.a in february, at the abuja airport, the customs guy was like how much is all the items in the bags worth, i said 800usd and he said i have to pay a levy of 50k cos there's a new law that says if you shop more than 500usd, you pay a levy or duty. I now asked him that why buy ticket and pay for hotel to now shop less than 500usd. Bottom line is he couldnt show me circular of the payments and i refused to pay. After dragging and he saw i wasnt budging and i was forming calling different peeps i know, he let me go saying next time i have to note and pay the money.
Lagos own is the worst of them all. I never fly from there anymore cos they will just collect your passport and you will be paying "toll" frm customs to ndlea to immigration etc.
And its openly ooo. The worst is that ndlea will take your passport and if u refuse to drop they will say they wanna check you that they suspect u...they will threaten to call for your checked in bags and that way u will miss your flight. So you will end up dropping else u miss ur flight, and then have to pay to reschedule and maybe hotel.

    2. That's how 1 idiot was forming that he wants to check my passport & asked where I was coming from... I told him tou have my passport, you can look inside & see. After flipping through the 2 passports, he stupidly asked why I traveled to Brazil, I said I have the money & I love women from that part of the world, he threw the 3rd question & asked you're always in & out of Nigeria, why? I said coz I'm a Nigerian citizen & also a US permanent resident, the expression on his face was that of defeat but he continued pushing with more questions. Asked what my occupation was & I said I'm an engineer, he asked where i practice, I said wherever the money is more, I offer services there. He then shamelessly asked me to "engineer" them, I told him to explain it in plain English so I can understand, he threw my passport to me & I calmly said thank you & walked out

  25. you are a very daft sombori, part of why Nigeria is stagnated cos you just sit and remain ignorant of a process. I can bet you don't know that the official rate is 17,600 and they keep the extra you paid to themselves. People need to speak out and get their criminal immigration asses checkmated. So shush and probe further next time

  27. It is high time for us women to stand by ourselves so that all these nonsense will stop. Where is the Comptroller General for God's sake? We all heard what happened to the stupid DPO that beat the police woman recently in this same Abeokuta, I think these Immigration officers must be punished for what they did especially that stupid woman called Makinde who couldn't behave as a mother because she is also a thief, God wll punish all of you. CP!!!! Pls wake up to this if u are a good father

  28. Idiot of no nation, keeping on paying & tomorrow you'll open your smelly mouth & lament how much of a terrible country Nigeria is. Someone stood up for her right, got beaten by cowards disguised as men & we're here condemning her. We all want a better Nigeria but nobody wants to pay for it! Even when manna fell from heaven, the Israelites had to do some work by picking it. Ours is to sit & form...local fowls & dogs everywhere.

  29. That post really disturbed me.
Only for me to see one stupid anonymous saying the woman was rude, notice how she didn't go with her husband, he/she knows their type, forming UK/US...
What the heck? That anonymous idiot, wherever you are, you will be harassed all your life. It won't stop until you tell God how sorry you are and purge yourself of that hateful bile you spilled out from that rotten belly of yours.
Good God, why are people so wicked? She narrated her experience and you come to type rubbish because you feel no one knows you.
Even if she was rude, does that warrant the inhumane treatment she got?
Where they forced to work there or held at gunpoint? We are what is wrong with this country and we cry aloud about our leaders.
    I'm beginning to get angry.
God help us in this country.
Anyone tries that shit with me will see the other side of me.
