Nigeria MP Mrakpor 'Slapped By Prison Boss' Aide'

The head of Nigeria's prisons service has been summoned to appear before parliament after his security guards allegedly slapped a female MP.
Onyemaechi Mrakpor, 49, and a member of the lower house, told the BBC she was attacked for overtaking the motorcade of Peter Ezenwa Ekpendu on Wednesday.

"One man banged at my car, slapped me and called me a prostitute," she said.

Mr Ekpendu reportedly watched as the lawmaker was assaulted by his aides within the premises of the parliament.

Mrs Mrakpor said she was shocked and embarrassed by what happened and had written a formal complaint to the police.
"I wondered if that could happen to me, what the other helpless Nigerians will be going through," she told the BBC's Focus on Africa radio programme.

The opposition lawmaker, who represents a constituency in the southern Delta state, said the incident highlighted the way women and girls are treated in the country.

Mrs Mrakpor was in tears when she reported the incident, one senior MP told parliament on Thursday.

"This is the time we need to rally behind her not just as a member but as a woman," MP Femi Gbajabiamila said, The Herald newspaper reported.
It is not clear when Mr Ekpendu, who has not yet reacted to the report, will face the MPs.

Nigerian officials often travel in large convoys, forcing other motorists to make way. There have been frequent accusations that those who refuse to pull over are assaulted.

All heads of security agencies in the parliament have also been summoned to explain why they failed to protect the lawmaker.

Driving along the roads of Nigeria's major cities, it is common to see a large convoy of senior government officials moving at high speed.
They often show scant respect for traffic rules.
When you spot the blue lights flashing behind your car or hear the sirens, you know that you must give way regardless of the situation.

This often causes terrible accidents and lead to abuses of ordinary motorists.
The country was shocked in September last year when the officials in the motorcade of a state governor allegedly assaulted a woman and her two children on a highway for not vacating the road for the politician's convoy on time.
In most cases the individuals or the politicians and security forces responsible for these large convoys get away with it.
After coming to office last year, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered his convoy and security aides to abide by traffic rules and respect other motorists.
But it appears that the president's action is yet to convince some other top officials to change their minds.

    1. Even as I was not there and don't even know this woman, Ezenwa Ekpendu cannot deny this. He is known for this stupid force. While they lived in Trans Ekulu, Enugu, they were a terror . The wife is even worse. I don't know what would happen if they were made president for a day. I remember this episode that happened in the son's (Ezenwa Junior) school. The boy was very notorious and could lie like everything. He went to school with an abrasion on the back of his head. His teacher asked him what happened as the head was totally scraped off. He said he jumped off the stair case of their house some days before. (Mind you ,the kids stayed most of the time alone with maids and guards). Poor teacher did the needful, took the boy to the head teacher, who called the mum asking if she was aware.
Puff!! madam stormed the school raving like 10hp turbo engine. Everyone, including school authority and parents tried to calm her, but nah lie. She put a call to her husband and that was when the real drama began. He dispatched a full load of police men from the SARS abakaliki road. They almost brought down the heavy school gate as the security men had locked up. They forced their way through, went into the boys classroom and took the class teacher away and locked her up in SARS. Parents and school authority rallied round to bail her after an order by the police to placate Mrs Ekpendu. Any woman that tried to correct her, she threatened with security agents. Did I tell you she's a serious born again of mountain of fire ?
After this episode, she naturally withdrew her son from there as no teacher was willing to even teach the boy anymore.
On another occasion, Mrs Ekpendu Lizzy went to visit her friend (my close friend) . Meanwhile, in Mrs Ekpendu's house, she had a load of prison warders as security and you had to be scrutinized each time before you could pass her gate. (If you know Trans Ekulu, you will know the compounds are usually tight especially around Dhamija where she stayed). You could practically hear her voice from the sitting room and would know she could see you at The gate but would leave you to be humiliated by her guards. On this day she went to visit her friend who's hubby was a top federal government official with all the guards from almost all parastatals, but always in muffty at the gate. She made the mistake of letting her thugs flex their muscle. The security operatives asked her to sign visitor's slip, she refused and asked her thugs to open another man's gate!! I never saw show of power as that. The humiliation on her was on another level. Of course that was the end of their friendship.

    4. I'm not the friend. All our kids were in the same school. And her case was a public affair between parents. No one actually liked her because she was quite pompous. I don't think I could survive a day with her as friends. I'm too resistant to arrogance

  4. Always reducing these infractions to an offence only when a woman is the victim is very unfair. Bad is bad no matter who does it or who is victim. The issue is not how government convoys attack women. Rather it should be how they attack hapless road users often with their boses looking on Males are randomly beaten by the security details and convoys of government officials but they are never brought to book hence they are emboldened to extend it to females. Let these people be properly punished not merely because a female and a law maker at that is involved but because a citizen is ill treated. Let's not see it as right when a man is the victim but wrong when a woman is a victim

  5. Hi Stellz
I had wanted to send the story in yesterday morning but held back a little. Read your blog all day hopping it will pop up.
Abuse against women under any form or guise shouldn't be tolerated.
As for the CG prisons, overzealousness and callousness of his aides have seriously dented his image. I'm sure this issue will definitely overshadow his career as he is said to be retiring soon.

  11. They should be used to set example for dem bullies. That's how one group almost ran me off the road around last week cos I was on the speed Lane. Even when I made way for them, the aides and some soldiers proceeded to hit the bonnet and boot of my vehicle as they passed. Ndi Ala. Intimidating people anyhow.

      Why slap another human being?

That someone is not a woman or a wife does not make them expendable...

Having said that, I agree it's really annoying the way many NIGERIAN men resort to calling women prostitutes when they have the slightest issue with them.
