1- Jacob Zuma survives impeachment scare
South African President Jacob Zuma easily survived an impeachment vote Tuesday after a stormy session of parliament over a court ruling that he had violated the country’s post-apartheid constitution.
Lawmakers from Zuma’s African National Congress (ANC) rallied to his defence, defeating the motion by 233 votes to 143 despite growing pressure for him to resign over the scandal.
2- If CCT trial is fair, I would be vindicated, says Saraki
Nigeria’s senate president, Bukola Saraki has said he is glad that his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal on false asset declaration in 2003 finally commenced yesterday.
Saraki said “the proceedings of today has given him confidence that if the trial is conducted fairly he would be vindicated”.
The Senate President noted that even though the prosecution tried to bring in some dramatic narratives, it was clear that they were merely thrashing around and hoping to titillate the public with salacious tales.
He added that he was hopeful however that when the time comes, his lawyers will have the opportunity to present his case.
3-By Thursday there would be no queues in Abuja, Lagos – Kachikwu
The Minister of State for Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, has reiterated the commitment of NNPC to end the lingering fuel scarcity in the country this week, noting that, by Thursday there will be no queues in Lagos and Abuja.
Kachikwu gave the assurance during an official visit to the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) on Tuesday in Abuja.
4-Fuel pump price will be reviewed quarterly – PPPRA
The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) has stated there will be a quarterly review of petroleum pump price in Nigeria.
In a statement issued by Sotonye Iyoyo, the acting executive secretary of PPPRA the decision by the federal government to remove subsidy will no be reversed, however, there will be a review in the pump price.
5-Alaska Air to buy Virgin America for $2.6bn
Alaska Air Group Inc said on Monday that it had agreed to buy Virgin America Inc. for 2.6 billion dollars to expand its flights on the U.S. West Coast.
Alaska Air made this known in a newsletter issued on Monday which stated that the merged airline would become the fifth largest in the U.S.
6-LASTMA experience is a proof that state police will succeed -Ambode
The Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode, on Tuesday said that the state’s experience and success with Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) was a sign that state police would succeed.
Amobode spoke at the 6th Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC)Annual Lecture in Abuja with the theme“ `State Road Traffic Management Efforts: the LASTMA’s Experience’’.
“ Our LASTMA experience in Lagos has demonstrated one thing, the need to extend it to the creation of State Police
“What Lagos State has demonstrated with LASTMA is that we should have no fear if the police is locally domesticated. We will only promote efficient enforcement machinery. He called on states to leverage the Lagos LASTMA experience for sustainable road safety development in the country but to do so without prejudice.
7-Sports Minister gives NFF conditions for hiring of foreign coach
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, on Tuesday gave the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) conditions for the hiring of a foreign coach for the national team. Dalung gave the conditions at a meeting with NFF Executive Committee members at his National Stadium office, Abuja.
He said the executive committee members needed to convince him of the competence of the foreign coach they had in mind as the government was ready to do all it could to avoid a repeat of the Sunday Oliseh experience.
“The issue of a foreign coach was debated extensively, but it was still referred to the technical committee alongside the NFF to show the cost and why the option of a foreign coach is viable.
“And if it is indeed viable where we get the money to fund it.
“They are expected to present that report to the honourable minister in four weeks.”
Dalung said that the hiring of a coach would be hinged on the report.
He also said it was wrong for people to call for the resignation of the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, because Nigeria would not be participating in the 2017 African Cup of Nation.
8-Gunmen kidnap Lebanese, kill soldier in Bayelsa
Gunmen killed a Nigerian soldier and
kidnapped a Lebanese construction worker on Tuesday in a shootout in the southern oil-producing Niger Delta, police said. Pipeline attacks and violence have been on the rise in the swampland since authorities issued an arrest warrant in January for a former militant leader on corruption charges.
9-Okoli, popular Ilorin hotelier, again kidnapped
The owner of the popular Bovina Hotel in Ilorin, Chief Ifeanyi Okoli, has again been kidnapped. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Okoli, the owner of the three-star hotel who was first kidnapped five years ago in Ilorin has been kidnapped again.
10-Kaduna quarantines Lassa Fever victims
The Kaduna State Government on Tuesday said one person is being treated of Lassa Fever, while others who have come into contact with the victim are being monitored.
The Commissioner of Health, Prof Andrew Nok said this in a message to a one-day interactive session on Routine Immunization, Budget Scorecard and
Government priorities in Child and Family Health.
