1 - We’ll treat pipeline vandals like Boko
Haram, Buhari warns
President Muhammadu Buhari has warned that henceforth, the activities of vandals and saboteurs blowing up oil and gas installations will get the same reaction from his government as that being taken against Boko Haram insurgents by the Armed Forces.
Speaking at a meeting with members of the Nigerian community resident in China, as part of his tour to the country, Buhari reaffirmed his commitment to winning the war against corruption, saying that the menace was an arch-enemy of the nation which has destroyed the lives of many Nigerians.
2 - For executive-legislative amity, Reps may revisit 2016 Budget
The impasse over the 2016 Budget passed by the National Assembly and awaiting presidential assent may be broken at the House of Representatives which expressed a readiness to ‘re-examine ‘ it yesterday.
The decision to take a second look at the budget at the lower federal legislative chamber is to ensure a cordial relationship with the executive arm of government and in the interest of Nigerians, according to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr .Yakubu Dogara.
3 - Senate begins work on new PIB
The Upper Chamber of the National Assembly (NASS)the Senate has commenced work on the controversial updated version of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) and passed its first reading on the floor on Wednesday.
The PIB which could not be passed by the 7th National Assembly has now been re-named Petroleum Industry and Governance Bill (PIGB).
4 - It was difficult dumping England for Nigeria, Iwobi confesses
Alex Iwobi is proud to represent Nigeria – even though he says it was “a difficult decision” to turn down England.
The 19-year-old has been the breakthrough star of Arsenal’s season and has two goals and three assists in his three Premier League starts for the club.
Iwobi, who was born in Lagos, has made two appearances for Nigeria – both against Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations.
“It was a difficult decision picking Nigeria over England,” he said.
5 - Giwa, factional members to face NFF’s disciplinary board
‘For bringing Nigerian football and the country to ridicule,’ the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has summoned ‘factional leader,’ Chris Giwa and his group, which include Yahaya Adama, Muazu Suleyman, Sani Fema and Effiong Johnson to appear before its Disciplinary Board.
The NFF says Giwa and his ‘gang’ were summoned for contravening its statutes and other extant football laws. The decision was taken yesterday at the end of the NFF extra-ordinary general assembly in Abuja.
6 - Fashola, Ugwuanyi seek local investor in nation’s growth drive
The need to grow the nation’s investor- base around local entrepreneurs has been reiterated, as they have been identified as not only important private-public partnership, but also will remain when the situation gets tough.
Besides, while it is helpful to attract and secure the multi-billion Naira investments, they are usually not many enough to create the inclusion that are needed, which small businesses continue to provide.
The Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Raji Fashola and Gov. Ugwanyi made the assertion while speaking at a “Public-Private People Partnership for a Vibrant and Inclusive Economy”, at. the Enugu State Investment Summit.
7 - Fresh hope for transplant patients
Hearts from genetically modified pigs could soon be transplanted into cardiac patients after an organ implanted into a baboon survived for more than two and a half years.
Scientists hope the procedure, known as xenotransplantation, could combat the dire shortage of organs from human donors, which often leads to patients dying before they receive a transplant.
8 - ‘Depressed economy worsening quality of learning, teaching’
The prevailing depressing economic climate in the country, occasioned largely by paucity of funds is whittling down the chances of meeting standard requirements for quality tertiary education.
This development, the immediate past vice chancellor of Niger State-owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, Prof. Ibrahim Adamu Kolo, says continually compounds the smooth running of these institutions and negatively affect quality of learning and teaching.
9- President set to complete Mambilla hydro-power project
The President yesterday told the Chinese Premier that his administration was committed to the completion, in the shortest possible time, of all joint power,
rail, road and aviation projects that will directly and quickly improve the lives of Nigerians. Buhari said that he was particularly keen on actualising the Mambilla Power Project because of its huge potential to boost employment and
national economic growth. The Chinese Premier assured President Buhari
that China was ready to work with his
administration to complete all joint projects, including the Mambilla Power Project.
10- El-Zakzaky sues Army, other security agencies for N2b
Leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, otherwise known as Shiites, Sheikh Ibraheem El- Zakzaky, has sued the Nigerian Army and other security agencies of the Federal Government for
the sum of N2 billion for alleged breach of his fundamental human rights.
El-Zakzaky also directed his lawyers to challenge the composition of the judicial commission of inquiry set up by Kaduna State Government.
