Male Contraceptive To Hit The Market In 2 Years

First ever male contraceptive known as Vasalgel is set to hit the market in 2 years..

Other than condoms men only had vasectomy as a contraceptive till the birth of Vasalgel a long-acting, non-hormonal contraceptive with a significant advantage over vasectomy: it is also likely to be more reversible.

Trial leader Donald Waller said “Results from our study in rabbits were even better than expected,” he is a pharmacologist at the University of Illinois at Chicago. “Vasalgel produces a very rapid contraceptive effect which lasted throughout the study due to its unique hydrogel properties.

These features are important considerations for a contraceptive product to be used in humans.”

According to Guardian, the contraceptive was Developed by US-based not-for-profit company, the Parsemus Foundation, Vasalgel works by blocking the tube sperm travels down – the vas deferens – with a flexible, spongy, hydrogel material. That means all the important fluids can still get through, but larger objects, like sperm, can’t, which prevents pregnancy. It has been shown to block sperm for up to 12 months.

Dr Elaine Lissner, Executive Director of the Parsemus Foundation confirms that the shot consists of styrene-alt-maleic acid (SMA) that is dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide. Therefore, Vasalgel could be the first long-acting, non-hormonal, potentially reversible male contraceptive to reach market.

This is surely a relief for women...right?
