Lawyer Who Was Beaten To A Pulp By Soldiers In Festac Explains What Happened.

On April 26th,A Nigerian citizen and Attorney at Law was given the beating of his life and left for Dead by four Nigerian soldiers in Festac town.
The story made headlines a few days back and when it got to me,I asked that the brutalised man tell exactly what happened and this is his narration of how he was almost turned to corned beef by Nigerian Soldiers...He cries for Justice!

''My name is barrister Olajide Sipe. On the 26th of April, at about 1:30pm, I left my house to buy water for my wife and son beside Thrillers at 4th avenue, Festac Town. On my way back, after buying the water, I passed through Mobil filling station; which was selling petrol at 23/4th avenue junction. There was some traffic building up just after the filling station, which I noticed was due to an ‘OP MESA’ soldier that stopped a bus driver on the road and was speaking with him. When I got close to the soldier, without getting down from my vehicle, I politely asked the soldier to instruct the driver of the bus to move a little off the road so as to allow other motorist free passage.

He then replied by saying: “wetin concern you? Useless man like you”. I then went on to reply by saying: “oga, I nor dey teach you your work, but abeg help us make we fit comot here quick”. Then he left the bus and started walking towards my window, while I was still in the vehicle. I then decided to drive off in order to avoid a being involved in a scene. But before I could move my car a distance, I saw another soldier walking towards my car with a keg (jerrycan), while the first one was still following me.

I decided to slow down a little as I had gotten to a bend, then suddenly the second soldier started kicking my headlight. While he was at this, the first soldier at the back met up with my car and punctured one of the rear tyres. This was when I sensed trouble brewing and decided to drive away. As I tried driving away, the soldier with the keg smashed my windscreen with the keg in his hand. I continued driving after this, with my eyes on my side mirror. This was when I saw them mounting ‘okada’ bikes along with 2 other soldiers who came out from the side of the road.

This resulted in four of them chasing me on the bikes they had mounted. By now, I had turned into ‘72 road’ and kept driving straight on. By the time I got to the end of the road, I slowed down and decided to do a u-turn so as to loose them, and gain some distance to enable me go straight home. As I made the u-turn, they rammed into my car, but I still drove on looking at my rear mirror to note their position. This was when I saw one of them going down on one knee to take aim at me. I became perplexed and scared as to why they would want to pursue, harm and even shoot at me.

The soldier taking aim released the first shot at my car, but I don’t know where it hit. Then he took aim and fired another shot which hit one of my rear tyre. This resulted in me moving on 2 tyres, which led the car to come to a halt. As I tried coming down from my car out of shock, they grabbed me and began to torture me. They hit me with their boots, kicked me, hit me with sticks, stones and the butt of their guns. They tried hard to break my joints and my spine with a fallen NEPA pole, until one of them took a big stone, turned it to the sharp edge and hit it repeatedly on my head.

It was after this that one of them (light in complexion with dark sunglasses on) brought out a knife to stab me in the chest, but one of them held him back. He then decided to hit me repeatedly with the knife butt. They then went on to vandalize my car by puncturing all my tyres, smashing the front windows and the driver’s side mirror.

This continued until my vision became blurry due to blood flowing from my head, down my face and into my eyes. It was at this point that an elderly gentleman (who people later identified as a retired air commodore living nearby), who was brave enough to approach them, presented his identity card to them. This made them to quickly board the bikes they came in and flee. Neighbours and passers-by quickly rushed me to a hospital close by, where the doctor on duty attended to me; trying to bring me to full consciousness and stabilize my critical condition. By the time I was able to speak a little, I requested the hospital staff help call my wife and brother, who rushed in almost immediately.

A soldier with a name-tag A. I. Sadi later came to the hospital and introduced himself as the commander of the troops deployed to 7th Avenue within Festac Town; which the four soldiers belong to. He apologized for the incident and promised to conduct investigations on it. Only to come back a few hours later to say that the four soldiers were not under his command.

A report was lodged at the Festac Police Station soon after, and the officer assigned to the case; named Fidelis, came to view the crime scene and to check on my condition.
I plead with the President Buhari, Governor Ambode, Chief of justice, chief of army staff, Nigerian Police chief, members of press, and every concerned citizen to please join me in crying out for justice. I was almost killed a day before my birthday for doing nothing wrong.

As a member of the Nigeria Bar Association, I also implore every related personnel to make sure this doesn’t end up being ‘just another case of army brutality’; but to call on every resource and finally put to bed this form of negativity within our society.
I thank God for His mercy and life.

    1. Please let's get justice for Barr. Jide Sipe. I know him personally, he could have been killed if not for God's intervention. How soldiers can be beating and attempting to stab a young man in broad daylight with people watching just because he asked them to stop obstructing traffic. We have to teach them a lesson, so it never happens again or perpetually live in fear. It could be you Tomorrow if you don't join in the fight. Let's stop this barbarism, this is no different from Aluu 4, we are not animals in a jungle. This is an opportunity to put an end to this and protect ourselves and our children in future. Please send this link to human rights groups and civil liberty societies, till we get justice. Please contact me with any info or click my name to send a mail #justiceforjidesipe#

Dnt fight or confront what you can not kill, unless you are in the law court. Any body can wear uniform but it takes real decipline and professionalism to be a force man. Kpele

  8. This country is lawless. Unless you are somebody, knows somebody or the child of somebody injustice can be meted out to you & nothing will happen to the perpetrators. I hope you get the justice you seek & that the idiots involved will be taught a lesson.
I keep telling people, sometimes it pays to mind ones business especially as a driver... cautioning other drivers & knowing ones right is good but wisdom & been sensitive to situations can save ones life. You see a solider aiding a driver to block the road & you think he's mentally ok? May we not meet angels of death as we go about our daily lives IJN.

If this could happen to an educated and enlightened man like this, just imagine what would have happened if he weren't educated or if that Retired Military Personnel didn't intervene!
Biko this type of injustice shouldn't be going @all.
    God bless Nigeria.

  13. More lawyers should be beaten. They think they are the only intelligent people, hence, they call themselves learned. Where do you put nuclear scientists ? All SANS should be stripped naked and beaten especially the ones defending corrupt officials.

    9. All of you cursing me - Fine. But ask yourself one question - if a lawyer is in the courtroom does an army officer come into the court room to tell him how to present his/her case? - NO. Therefore, when the military are carrying out their duties do not tell them as a civilian how to go about it. Lawyers, as I said, believe they are "learned" so they can quote the law anywhere. Well, he got his ass whooped for putting his mouth where it did not belong. Personally, I think lawyers are overated. You get them 3 a dime, and most are walking the streets with worn out shoes. Go outside any court house you will see them. And that Oluyede that disrespected a sitting judge should be thrown in jail next time he does that.

    11. Anon 13:52, it is obvious that you attempted to become a lawyer but was rusticated/expelled! Keep on envying lawyers! You can never become a lawyer and your generation can never have one!

And who told you it does not concern the victim when the army officer is obstructing his right of passage?!

A human life was nearly wasted and you spewing all these trash! You are just as heartless as those bestial soldiers!!!

    12. Goaldyn Boy, I am a scientist and a billionaire. I do not envy anyone, instead people envy me. I don't curse people, only say the truth as I see it. Now if you feel the army is obstructing your way next time you are at an army checkpoint wind down and tell the officer to go _uck his mum. You might escape if you can speed away, but with your luck your car engine might just stall. Picture the rearrangement you will get.

    13. Read what you posted slowly and then process it.

The man is a lawyer, big deal, what about so many others that have been klled or assaulted by these scoundrels in uniform ? Are they all lawyers too? Instead of you to condemn what is wrong, you are justifying it.

My dear, you may consider relocating to the cave, your thought process is faulty and archaic.

  16. This is so sad, why will people they pay to protect our lives be the ones killing us, they think they are above the law and they handle the civilians without respect. This is so sad because this can only happen in my country Nigeria.

  17. Nigerian military men and women are ANIMALS!!! I HATE THEM!!!

  18. Animals of the highest order!I wonder if they are trained on how to relate with the public. Alot of work need to be done

  19. The best way to punish these soldiers is to send them to face boko haram without giving them any gun or arms! As in throw them down from helicopter into a compound occupied by terrorists, while putting on their military uniforms!

I remember the day I was in a very tight lagos hold-up, one guy who was driving his car in danfo-drivers-style forced himself into my front and in so doing, completely brought down my car's front bumper! I stepped down from my car and walked to him saying: Oga come down and see, you have spoilt my car! The man showed me a hand pistol (gun) by his side saying if I don't get out of his window he will shoot me! He said when he begged me to enter I refused! I had to jejely walk away from him. Park my car by the side. Carry my bumper put inside booth and start looking for the nearest panel-beater!

So, what I'm saying is that we bloody civilians should always give Nigerian Soldiers long pole (arms length) as we give the Devil, to avoid stories that touch the heart!!!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oga, sorry oooo.
But next time, don't put ur mouth for soldier business. They are not civilians ie not civil.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Whirlwind 17.34, the point is that when the military are at a checkpoint , no matter how their conduct is slow leave them alone. They know why they are doing what they are doing. A guy like this victim did everything wrong instead of waiting and apologizing he sped away and even tried to run over an army officer with his car. It is the arrogance of the lawyer in him that made him do all that. He has himself alone to blame.

    1. When did it become the job of the army to set up check points? and in the middle of the road obstructing the flow of traffic? Then all four idiots chased after the man leaving the check point abandoned. When they caught up with him, why not arrest him? the animals in them decided to beat him up to within an inch of his life to prove what? boko haram is roaming free and fulani herdsmen are killing anyhow, why don't these powerful soldiers go fight them? The Nigerian army is full of many illiterates who could not succeed in life and joined as a last resort. Their mates in America and putting their lives on the line and going to iraq to fight terror. these ones are arranging tire on the road just to harass citizens and beg for money.

The only difference between most of the junior officers in the army and boko haram is the uniform. Same animals, same lack of common sense, same zero value for life, same low self esteem and inferior complex, same bleak future.

Anyone supporting this barbaric act is part of the reason Nigeria is not progressing.

To the anonymous claiming billionaire scientist, you might have money but you are no scientist. your argument lacks merit. No facts, no evidence and no logic. All it does is show your disdain for lawyers. They are learned because they know the law and all its intricacies. That in no way translates to knowing everything in life. whatever your beef is with the profession, separate and let common sense rule. This is a man's life we are talking about here. FYI I am a scientist.

      Delete
  22. No beef with you. But since the low rank army officers are animals, any intelligent human being will know to leave them alone to do their job. Btw we have some laying their lifes on the line in the fight against BK while you and I sleep in our cosy beds at night.
