Flogging In Schools....

Corporal punishment is not new in schools.

Teachers cane erring pupils without their parents raising eyebrow. But the “inhuman treatment” of Ogechi Anyalewechi, a Junior Secondary School Two (JSS II) pupil of Eva Adelaja Girls’ Secondary School in Bariga, Lagos, who was said to have been flogged on her bare buttocks and back has provoked a debate on the punishment.

The welts on Ogechi Anyalewechi’s bare buttocks and back are healing gradually after being flogged by her teachers about a fortnight ago.  But the case has provoked debate about how to instill discipline in schools. Ogechi, a JSS2 pupil of Eva Adelaja Girls’ Junior Secondary School in Bariga, Lagos, was flogged by two teachers on the directive of the Principal, Mrs C.O. Coker, for being rude to the head girl. The 14-year old was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

She has chosen not to continue at the school because of alleged persecution by her mates who protested the removal of the principal and four other teachers by the Lagos State government.

Flogging is a common form of punishment for maintaining discipline in schools. It is also commonly used by parents to call their children to order.  While some teachers and parents think it should be phased out, other teachers who spoke to The Nation disagreed..

Those who disagree are mostly teachers who teach in public schools, like Eva Adelaja, which is run by the Lagos State government.
A teacher, who teaches in a public school in Education District V foresees danger and loss of morals if flogging is banned.

“You have to experience what we go through with these students before you can ask us not to flog them.  Some of them display bad attitude. Some are hardly punctual. Some come to school barefooted or unkempt. Some smuggle phones to school and all they do is waste their time on social media. Some steal or fight. He argued that the only punishment that has been so effective over the years is flogging; and believe me, we are getting result,” he said.

Another public school teacher, Mr Salisu Ibrahim (not real names), also thinks flogging is necessary. But he said teachers should beat pupils according to their sizes. “Most teachers abuse the use of cane by using it unequally.

Many adults who grew up in Nigeria attested to being flogged in their school days. Some of them stated the fact that it worked in disciplining them, so it can work on young people today.

However, society has changed and we are looking up to America. In America you cannot beat children. But the maturity of children in America is different from our own children here; so if we just import those laws and behaviour, it’s going to spell doom for us.

***

As a Nigerian parent, do you support flogging in our schools or not?

Would you condone flogging of your lil kids in the name of discipline?

Don't you think it would be better if the students are corrected in love?

Where you caned as a student? Did it help you in attaining a higher level of discipline?

*HEAVEN HELPS WHOEVER FLOGS MY CHILD..I am still having nightmares from the marks on that child abuse post of yesterday......hmm!!!..if anybody flogs my child,oh GOD help them!

    1. As a 9jia parent flogging is allowed by me alone. You can't flog my child @ all, but. You must report any wrong doing and I will take action. In my kids sch, kids are only flogged in the presence of the parents, u are invited to sch your child's offence will be told to you and then the child will be punished in your front. Only God can help this generation oh.

    6. Flogging is not bad. It is over flogging that is the problem. Some of these teachers pour all their frustration into the flogging. Why flog her till she has to go to hospital? I beg they have to be sacked joo

    7. I chopped correct flogging as a child in school. My mom would slap us every now and then but nothing serious. Except for a few times that she used a cane, which I remember well. But in my secondary school as a border, omo see flogging, slaps and abara..(backslap) both from teachers and seniors. The flogging sometimes came without notice sef.. and I didn't die o.
Even though I became rebellious and started to challenge the oversabi teachers that flogged for no reasons. But will I tolerate that regime with my kids at this day and age? I don't think so.

I've never had any incident of flogging in my kids' schools, so I wouldn't know how to react if it ever happened. But I once had to go warn a senior student that touched my child in school. Chai, they won't forget me in a hurry. I brought the roof down when their house mistress was trying to hide the senior student from receiving my wrath. She saw how livid I was that dat ehn.

Abeg let nobody touch my kids.. u can punish them, I don't mind. After all that's the reason I sent them to school, to learn and be disciplined. But not the flogging that will kill a child o.

I saw on TV months ago.. a girl in school in Ogun state or so, was slapped on the face by her teacher. That face started to swell up and the girl became blind in that eye. It didn't end there. She was hospitalised and series of surgeries couldn't save her. Long story short, she died.
Now the teacher is in custody and has been in and out of court. She'll prolly get time in jail, but the poor parent have lost their child. Some said it couldn't have been a mere slap that degenerated to what the girl's eyes became.. but the point is she was slapped, so the teacher gets the blame. Better to stay off touching another person's child altogether.

    1. Most time I want to say flogging is good. But with my little experience over the yrs. I will rather they introduce punishment. My little nephew that is 7yrs old can't stand it when the teacher put him on red. He doesn't even want to hear it. When the bus driver reported him to his mum some time ago about him eating in the bus. The bus driver told him,"if you try it again I will report you to ur head mistress. That was the last time he tries it. Because he doesn't want to be clipped to red. All I'm saying is this, there are so many ways to discipline a child without bn flogged. The flogging part shld be left 4 parent. Teachers job is to teach not to flog. When the child misbehave put a note in his or her bag. If the child is one of them those curse children that doesn't take to instructions and constantly constitute nuisance in school then he or she should be send home to the parents for a better training. or if need be, takes the child to "kids correction home". Except a child is posses. All children can be corrected with God and proper discipline.. though flogging is good sometimes, But let it be the job of our parents!!! My 1cent...

It could be a form of punishment for other things like being stubborn in class, dirty, fighting, making noise etc. Flogging a child for failing doesn't make sense sef. As you'd just instill fear on the child without yielding positive results

Did it help to discipline me?
    Yes
Will I let my kids be flogged?
    No
I had a lot of resentment,
I was one of those kids that cries a river at the sight of the cane
Even till secondary school when "odaeshi" was reigning, I have to spoil it because I must cry
It hurt like hell mehn so I don't think I can even flog my kids
I spanked my nephew once for being incredibly heady,
He cried so much that I ended up crying n hugging him.
His mum didn't seem to mind cos it was normal but it broke me cos I had flashbacks instantly.
As God ll have it, the people we look up to have devised other means of punishment that works in more than 50% of the case.
To me that is good enough, I am willing to correct my kids with love and other strict means that doesn't involve flogging.
    So help me God

  21. i will not condemn it totally but its bad. i was never flogged by my parents. i was flogged in secondary school. my dad saw the mark on my back and called the principal. what did my daughter do to be flogged with a mark on her back, she is a girl and marks are not good on girls body. even the principal didnt know what i did. i came 5mins late to the assembly cos i was the student on duty to mop. another time was cos my class was very close to the staff room. we must be quiet at all times. you know students once no teacher in class na playtime. we "receive" cane every other day, on bare foot, hands, butts etc.

my dad only flogged my bros and not any of my sis. my opinion is flog on the hands and not on the body that's all.

  22. But eh the lack of discipline is killing the system. Most of us received such treatment and it really shaped and made us to be what we are today. Didn't you grow in Nigeria? Weren't you caned? I'm no supporting condescending treatments of kids all in the name of flogging to correct. If my child does wrong in school, he should be caned. If he/she is cruelly treated all in the name of correcting, then the teacher will explain if death has been incorporated into school curriculum as a deterrent to bad behaviour. Stella, stop this your ignorant over sabi. No be only you go abroad. Thank you.

  25. Its very simple, if you don't want to spank your kids then don't. If you don't want them to be spanked in school, take them to where kids are not spanked. Don't come here and be screaming "no one should touch my child or heaven helps those who touch my children" when the child attends a school where they have that as the norm. The way everybody brings up their children is different.

  28. I don't believe in sparing the rod, when it comes to children who are old enough, misbehaving.

As long as you do the flogging on the palms, lovingly, and not leaving marks on the whole body.

As they get older, it's time to drop the cane, and correct them in strict and positive ways, when they err, because continously flogging growing children, breeds resentment and rebellion.
They'll be like, 'afterall, they'll just flog me'.

Stellz, of course, you can say that, because that's how it works over there. If your children were attending a school where flogging was used to discipline children, they wouldn't have been exempted and nothing would have happened, unless they were battered in the name of flogging.

Funny enough, the only times I was flogged, was in primary school, and twice in college.
Our principal in HRC, believed more in suspension and using a book, Behaviour For Learning (BFL), which contained all the possible college 'crimes' and their appropriate punishments.

Who born you to give corporal punishments?
Spitfire sister Mercy. We dreaded her suspensions and the occasional expulsions.
Thankfully, I was among the few in my set, that didn't taste suspension. Popsi for kee me...lol.

And well, I won't say that it's the few floggings that made me a better person. I think constructive criticisms and talks, played the greater role.

Oh well, I was never a problem child.

Spare the rod and spoil the child.
That's how it works, at least, in this country.

  40. Do teachers over flog the student? Yes they do. Is flogging really a necessary medium for coreecting and punishing stubborn pupils/students? Not necessarily. I believe there are many ways to punish a kid without inflicting injury on the said kid. Gone are those days where flogging brought sanity. Now instead of bring sanity they go more crazy and u end up pushing them away. I know we are not in America, but we can be more civilized. Punish them by giving them hard labour, and other things they could fear and think of before they commit again.
let me ask, since all the flogging how many of them have changed? lets say 3 out of 10% of them.
Mothers, its tym we stand up against this humiliation on our kids, cos some end up being scared to go to school. fine you might say it only happens in the poor people's school, but the poor people are also human beings same blood that runs through your vein runs through theirs. please let help this people. they might not have a say, but we can help them, speak for them. even the bible spoke about helping the poor. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy” (Prov 31:8-9). you can read prov.21 vs 15, Deut. 15 vs 11, Isa. 58 vs. 7, Job 29 vs 12, Prov. 31 vs 8 - 9. 42. anyways, to me, flogging is alright. But is there a change after flogging the student? That's the question? If after you flogged the students once, twice or thrice and there is no change, employ another means of punishment. When I was in secondary school, I was flogged on the instruction of my principal for doing something wrong and it really changed me, I became a prefect later on. Now, I have taught before and hmmmm, students can be very terrible and daring. For example, I gave my students assignment to submit on a particular day, some submitted, some gave excuse, those who gave excuses, I gave them grace of some more days, then there was this girl who was just too daring, said the worst I will do if she does not submit her assignment is to cane her on her palms, e no go pas 12 strokes, i laughed, now, I really don't like flogging, it takes strength, anyways, she refused to submit and the day I was to flog her, she was fast in bringing out her palms, I heard some students say, chester. I laughed, ordered her to lie down on the table or something sha, she first retorted and then agreed, I gave her 24 lashes of can on her buttocks, now this is someone who teachers have said she is a tout, friends, after this flogging, she cried, i mean she cried, i called her and told her that she must submit her assignments, I mean all the assignments she is been owing, friends, it was like magic, the next monday, teachers had to take extra time to mark her homework, to cut the story short, she came out the second best in the whole school in her WAEC, the caning changed her, like I heard she couldn't sit for some time and the impact of the cane was hard. Another girl I remember, I think her name is Merrilyn, she at age 14 started getting involved with boys, doing all sort of rubbish, she had been talked to, preached to, etc, she no gree hear and she was an hostelite. One day, i caught her and a guy romancing in the class in the evening when others had gone for prep, I took both of them to my office, ordered both of them to lie down, gave them 12 strokes of cane on their butt and back, talked to them, gave them another 12 strokes of cane on their butt, after that encounter, they became vanguards telling students not to date till age 18. There are others I talked to and they changed, I even remember a day I was in Jss3 class and after teaching, there was still time, now Jss3 class was so notorious, if you cane them, their parents will come one by one, it was terrible. Anyways, that day, after teaching, I decided to call them and with the leading of the spirit of God, I talked to them, by the time I was done, all the students were crying, asking God to forgive them. Infact, some came confessing of how they stole money from teacher, etc. With wisdom, it was settled. What baffled me was that this students by themselves organized themselves and went to teachers and proprietress to apologize, they really begged for forgiveness, when the proprietress heard it was me, she asked what I did to them, I told her I spoke to them, friends, when I left that school finally, they cried and couldn't be comforted. Today, they add me on facebook, follow me on twitter, etc. You should know the right method of discipline at the right time. Remain blessed.
