SOLUTION FOR THUMB SUCKING
Hello Stella,i have a problem that has been eating me up.
Please my 2 year old daughter and 8month old son suck their thumb,i have tried everything I know from tying the thumb with plaster,applying bitter leaf juice to make them to stop sucking but it has not yielded any fruit.
Please anybody that knows anything that will abruptly stop them from sucking shouldn't hesitate to say it because the situation is becoming embarrassing to me.

DeleteMy daughter is sucking her thumb too, I have tried everything I could think off, as a matter of fact, I just socked her thumb in fijk herbal medicine(very bitter) she let it dried off or rub it on her cloth and continue sucking. My fear is her upper gum is protruding. I hope someone/dentist on her could offer a solution. Thanks

DeleteUse the good old trick our grandmums used.apply bitter leaf on the thumb or simply rub vinegar on it.she will remove it quickly from her mouth when she tastes the bitterness.In a short time the child will discontinue sucking for fear of tasting bitterness on the thumb. You can do it for about 2 weeks.

DeletePlease I don't know if it is universal, i always have this horrible deadly bad smelling watery discharge that comes out 24hrs to my menses, it is terrible, it is so bad it smells like a waste bin.

My mum is a nurse, there is nothing she didn't do for me to stop...whosai!!!

NAwa o. You mothers can worry o. Pls allow them, they will stop at their own time and pace. All the bitter leaf etc you are applying is a waste of time. I stopped sucking when I was in jss 3, in fact mine was worst, they rubbed pepper o, flog the fingers tire and I was sucking too fingers for dt matter, in class I ll just put my head on the desk and be enjoying my hands.

They should stop with time I guess. My younger bro then sucked his finger enh, but when we threatened to tell one girl he likes then in his class, he stopped all of a sudden. Small nursery school children love, hahaha
ReplyDeleteI dont really see thumb sucking in young children needing medical attention. Many kids suck their thumbs and eventually, they outgrow it. It is nothing to be embarrassed about please. One day, you will just notice that they have stopped.

DeleteThis is no issue, I sucked my thumb and played with my navel till I was in jss.3 that is 13years old, my mum tried it all from bitterleaf to razor blade threats to beating to everything, it got worse eventually she let me be, one day in jss3 my uncle looked at me and said that if I continued sucking my teeth would pop out like an Ape and no one would marry me or want to be my friend that pple would run and boom! 3days I tried cos I was so scared and I stopped everyone was amazed. Thumb sucking is easier 2 stop because its visible to the world, the real fear should be lip or tongue sucking so maam just let them be when its time they would feel ashamed and stop

ReplyDeletePoster, for both of them to be sucking their thumb then its in their genes. they probably inherited it from your family or husband's family or both. Do a background check.

ReplyDeleteI sucked my thumb till when i was 10..my mum tried all the tricks in the world she knew..even threatening to flush me down the toilet. I got scared but still hid to suck. I wouldnt say it was the threat that made me stop..i jist stopped!

ReplyDeleteMadam do all you can, my younger brother still sucked his thumb @ 20, yes 20 years old which is bad. Its almost too late now. When moms are busy and baby is hungry they just let their baby relieve himself by sucking instead of breastfeeding or bottle feeding the baby. Try bitter leaf, if it does not work then, enter genuine prayer. There is nothing prayer does not do.

ReplyDeleteThe child will just change position of the hand. My son sucks his thumb and when I used bitter leaf, he licked it off. When I used bandage, he changed to the left thumb from the right. When I used bandage on that one, he went to the next finger and so on. I go tired. Now he comfortably sucks any of the 3 fingers he wants to sick. Doesn't suck them at a time. But he van comfortably change to anyone he want and whether right or left..

ReplyDeleteHi.I'm a dentist.There are no medical complications attached with thumb or tongue sucking,however there can be dental complications if a child doesn't stop after the age of 4,such as improper arrangement of the dentition that could cause the child to use braces for correction of the dentition as he grows older.If your child doesn't stop after the age of 4.You could see an orthodontist(a dentist that specializes in arrangement of the dentition)and they would decide whether to give the child an appliance called an 'Habit Breaker' that would prevent the child from sucking.You could google 'Problems associated with thumb or tongue sucking in children'.

DeleteI will advice that parents do thier best to stop their children's sucking habit . I am 33 and I still suck my lips, I just recently stopped playing with my navel. I am really trying hard to stop sucking but I end up doing it unconsciously. I have open bite in my teeth and I wish to correct it. I wish my parents were harder on me when I was younger to help me stop it. Now I feel really helpless.
