Pupils In Kaduna Now Desert Schools After Eating Free Meals

The Kaduna State Government on Monday observed that primary school pupils in the state have developed the habit of leaving school immediately after being served free meals.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Shehu Adamu, told newsmen in Kaduna that the pupils desert their schools under the guise of going to drink water.

The state Governor, Nasir El-Rufa’i, had on January 18, flagged-off the School Feeding Programme to provide free breakfast to pupils across the state.

The Commissioner stressed that the programme was introduced to encourage school enrolment, attendance and retention, adding that the government was disturbed by the situation.

While expressing concern over the desertion of schools by the pupils after taking the free meals, Adamu appealed to parents to ensure that children remain in school after taking their meals, so as not to jeopardise the programme.

Adamu said that parents must also ensure that no child returned home until closing hours, “otherwise the aim would be defeated.”

“Therefore, parents have a responsibility of ensuring that the children do not only come to school on time, but remain in school till closing hours.

“The main goal of the school feeding programme is to attract out-of-school children to school and keep them in class for them to acquire education and better their lives.

“We will not allow a situation where children will just come to school and leave the moment they finished eating their meals; if it is about water, we have already asked parents to provide water for their children.”

On the delay in paying vendors supplying food under the programme, he said they had been directed to open account with Heritage Bank through which they would be getting their payments.

The Commissioner said the bank officials would screen and capture all the vendors in their respective local government areas.

  6. But how will primary school children manage to leave the school without school authorities noticing.
They should question their security measures or lack of it rather than kids.
    I miss Croc city.
Oh well I don't blame them after eating the next thing is sleep.
    Feed them during lunch time.

  8. Wait oh, so it means someone could have choked to death due to eating with no water or it's not part of table manners?
BTW, why is there an attendance register and all?? Parents who do not care if their kids join almajiri should ensure kids stay in school. Anyway, these people know the way to keep children in school but just feel like making noise.

These children are being forced to go to school because of free lunch. after the lunch what else do you have for them. Na to go home be that.

What will the parents do to keep the child in school? Isn't this supposed to be the responsibility of the teachers? The parents can only ensure they come to school.

  22. Lol, reminds me of my days in Edokpolor grammar school, Benin city, our school dismissed by 1:45pm but after the break by 11:45pm, half of the class goes home.. and I joined them at times, its not like they were distributing food or anything for us but you see, not everyone came to school to learn, some came to class to sit and wait for the time when they are going to play football, some came to look for any gambler that is going to accompany them to the game house and Idia college was just close by and that was where we showed our own love ... hehehehe.... so what I'm saying is that the children probably came to school because of the food as in what they had in mind coming... Lol.

  32. Well I don't understand the rational behind this feeding. It makes the pupils lazy, some of them even sleeps with their old stain uniforms while the lesson is on. Probably they should give the food at closing hour that will serve as lunch. Plus they should provide water for them too.
