You can either watch the interview or you can read the transcribed version below.....
Alero Edu: At age 15 you were writing songs and performing. Where did that influence come from?
Obiora Obiwon: Uhm for me it’s slightly different from... it didn’t come from the church, funny enough...uhm yes (laughs). It came from basically listening to the radio and the television. I had an elder brother... my elder brother his name is Kennedy, he loved the pop artistes of those days, he had the cassettes - the Michael Jacksons, Bobby Browns and all that. I just picked it up from there, started singing along and I started writing my own songs.
... ... ...
Nneota Egbe: But let’s look at your music, when you came out, you came out with songs like "Obi Mu O"... it's talking about...it's a love song right?
Obiora Obiwon: Sure
Nneota Egbe: Then you had "Onyinye"? Those were two of your major hits back then before...you... well, moved into gospel music
Obiora Obiwon: Yes, actually when I did "Obi Mu O" it was in my first gospel album...but being a love song and people had known me for love songs that totally ecplised all the other (laughs) other songs there. What happened was that...
Nneota Egbe: (Interrupts) ...So “Onyinye” was actually before you went into gospel?
Obiora Obiwon: Yes yes “Onyinye” was my first hit
Nneota Egbe: Okay
Obiora Obiwon: But when I got into the music industry... Aaah it was overwhelming for me. I wasn't even... I wasn't like a serious Christian when I went into the music industry. But I saw a life that scared me and I was... you know, participating in it. So I'm like if I continue this way I don't think I'm going to end up well. I liked what I saw in my parents - nice quiet home, family, children, having fun and I was very scared I was not going to have that with the way I was going so... The first thing I did was like, okay let's settle with God, let's, you know, find God and then, you know, be a good Christian who sings R'n'B but... the closer I got into God and started getting close to the church, my calling was clearer in my ear that God wanted to use my music...in gospel.
Nneota Egbe: So how has it been since that switch?
Obiora Obiwon: Aah intriguing... intriguing is the word (laughs). Awesome. I've learnt what it means to walk with God and to live by faith.
Nneota Egbe: Is it paying the bills? Or you have to find some other source of income to pay the bills?
Obiora Obiwon:Sure... Ah we must always work. Uhm one thing I've learnt, you know when you work with God, it might not come directly from what you do but one way or the other He provides for you So... I've been blessed to be able to take care of my home. I can't complain cause God is faithful.
Alero Edu: What do you think of the entertainment industry in Nigeria now?
Obiora Obiwon:It's come a long way. It's not there yet, but it's not where it used to be
Alero Edu: It's not there yet?
Obiora Obiwon:But it's not where it used to be, so we're hopeful.
Alero Edu:Okay, alright. his is the beginning of 2016, what are we looking forward to seeing from you this year?
Obiora Obiwon: Okay... My fourth album is in the works and you just saw the video of one of the new singles called "Bunibe"
Alero Edu: Bunibe... which means what?
Obiora Obiwon:Keep lifting
Alero Edu:Okay
Obiora Obiwon: Yeah exactly...(laughs)... and then the album's called Floodgates: ... We want to put it out by the third quarter, hopefully. Then we're coming out with more videos and more music.
(Interviewer signs out, Obiora Obiwon sings acapella)
*Obiwon is my favourite Nigerian Gospel artiste so please pardon me if i flood you with stuff about him in the next few weeks or months....I love his music and it makes me remember that GOD is all. There is so much lewd music going on and distracting one from going down on all and worshipping God.This isnt about whether he is the best or not,it is about the fact the his music is dedicated to Gods word....I am not a perfect Christian but i stand for Jesus oh...Dunno about you but i will understand if you refuse to read this interview or if you make a negative comment.
God bless you Obiwon,I love you and I love your hunger and fire to spread God's word...

ReplyDeleteAll I have to say is Nigerian presenters are so dry,so lazy, so basic.
ReplyDeleteYou can predict how an interview will go even before the first second.
This guy has been in the business for 10 years? This is not the time to be asking him what influenced him and if it pays the bills. Gosh!
So boring,so basic, so so lazy.
God bless you Obiwon, will grab ur CD today.
