No Banking Day Yesterday Was A Flop!

Nigerians will never cease to Amaze me!

Just one day to boycott Banking activities to try and address some problems
with how the Banks operate...Just one day to stay away and let them see how wrong what they are doing is..JUST ONE DAY but NO,it was the same day that Nigerians decided to bombard Banking halls as if they want to keep watch on their accounts.

The deducting from all our accounts continue today, the purpose for #NoBankingDay on March 1st was defeated...I am still trying to Understand why and i swear down,SHAME ON US ALL FOR NOT BEING ABLE TO HAVE ONE VOICE!

    1. It's a simple case of planning and preparation gone wrong. A laudable campaign but too short a time.

    3. I had to use pos to pay for two shoes I saw and liked. Going back today, I wouldn't have met them.

      Sorry

    1. Gbam! They can never stand up for a cause and they wonder why the government continously tramples on them smh...
Another thing is how well was this campaign advertised?

  3. Well, lots of factors caused it to flop ranging from our "suffering and smiling attitude" to ignorance.

The awareness of this was mainly on social media. I don't know if jingles were forbidden by NBC but that would have really helped...

    Another try won't hurt though.

But really, what effect does this have especially on the banks that we are aggrieved against?

  4. Disunity has always been a problem; not surprised at all.

Click my name for all your celebration cakes and cupcakes, cheers

  5. Seriously it is not feasible. We need to understand that if we have problems with the rules then we should be protesting to CBN not the banks. CBN made these laws and boycotting banking activities would only give bankers more time to flex.
We always focus our attention on ordinary citizens like us that's why robbers would rub innocent people travelling on the road, people going about their daily activities struggling to survive and not the big men stealing their monies and living large. I am not even saying attacking people is the way forward but let's hold our government and regulators responsible.
Boycott banking activities indeed, make I no come withdraw transport money to buy fuel that is scarce say wetin happen.

  6. It's so annoying I swear! Just one day. One freaking day! All we love to do in this country is complain! When are we going to realize the we are that change we desperately seek? Every single one of us! If they say boycott DSTV, some morons will still go and pay for their subscription. Only one day, the banking halls were filled to the brim.

If you went to the bank yesterday, shame on you!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Was surprised to see people trooping in and out of banks. But how far did the awareness go?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Stella the truth is there wasn't a good publicity, most ppl didnt even hear of it.

    1. Exactly! I didn't hear about it till yesterday. And yes, I went to the bank

  9. No one is holding Godwin Emefiele, everyone is shouting banks as if people who work there aren't affected by the charges.
15 January 2016, the CBN issued this circular, they didn't try to stop it. Wo we are in this together. According to the CBM it is the federal government's effort to boost it's revenue base, so why aren't we attacking the government? Aren't banks in business to make profit? Should they get sanctioned by the CBN because their customers are protesting.
Me I want to protest too but to what end? Would it stop the charge I got yesterday? Or the one I got the day before? I can't start putting my money under my pillow either.

  10. Lol.. Next thing now, they will start making silly meme's ... Awon olodo

  11. Stella please stick to what you know and understand. What are you talking about? Whoever came up with such a thing did a bad job of it. They did not give enough notice to people, people here being the masses. Imagine I heard about it just yesterday. So I should put on hold things I needed money to execute? Mbanu. This would have been achieved from the word GO when it was implemented, not when people have started settling into the new rules.
Our problems are more than this:
    Light
    Security
    Water
    Good roads
    And the list goes on.
Buhari should sit up and have an economic summit to revive things, then others will fall in place.
Tell the organiser that next time he should give enough notice and not having us hear from different people.

    ReplyDelete
  12. They did not create enough awareness.people simply did not know.some didn't even understand.you can't tell ppl a day or 2 about it and expect them to be prepared except maybe ppl that still put their money inside 'komkom'
Now I feel guilty for using my card when I ran out of money

    ReplyDelete
  13. Let me tell you the truth, nothing and absolutely nothing would have been achieved. Just take am as I tell you. Instead na the banks go cry and not the government.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Why won't it be a flop when there's no cash on people's hands.

    ReplyDelete
  15. There was no enough information and announcement.
Everybody I told yesterday didn't hear about it.
It's not everybody that's on social media you know.

    ReplyDelete
  16. So I won't eat again because of bank charges ba? I greet Una, biko u're on your own

    ReplyDelete
  17. And you expect a man with a family to stare at his chidren wen the need to withdraw money arises abi?@Stella.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Number 1. The awareness was limited to only social media. What happens to those market women and business men that use d banks?

    2. I was extremely broke yesterday oh, where I wan see money use if not bank.

    3. Next time, make d awareness as known as possible. Go to the streets, markets, shops, radios, TVs etc. Not everyone reads blogs.

I hope I've been able to convince u and not to confuse you that the flop was the fault of the organisers.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Ohh, colour me surprised!

I knew it was not going to work. With the mindest we walk around this country with? Akuko!

I was supposed to go deposit money yesterday, but I decided to do it today, even though I knew that it won't change anything.

But like I always say, the change we hope for, begins with us.

    1. Boycotting for one day wouldn't have done so much I think.
Awareness and hash tags about it on social media would have even gotten more attention than Boycotting the bank for a day and charges resumes the next day..

Aside that the awareness wasn't even much. How many business men are on Twitter or read blogs?? My Igbo brothers that are busy clearing containers and selling in their shop a whole day, how will they know what is happening.

      Another way should be provided

  20. I don't think the information was well published. It was only on SDK I saw it and that was it. Am sure if the information was well publicize it would have been a success.

  21. Many families doesn't even have one voice not to talk of my country. God help us

Please let the old peace I use to know in Sdk return

    ReplyDelete
  22. I didn't go to the bank on that day nor use any of their service, but I'll like to ask a few question here.

how many nigerian were actually informed and educated on the benefit of this initiative

How much awareness was created and for how long?

How many nigerians read blogs and newspapers?

Will you tell the common man not to go withdraw his salary from the bank, when he has been hoping and praying for pay day to come?

I'm sure you now see reasons why it couldn't work in the first place.

if they want to achieve this, they should think of a better ways.

    My 2 cent.

  23. Let me explain why? Did no banking day was not widely publicized! A lot of pple didn't knw about it! There re still a lot of pple dt dnt ve access to social media and internets yet they use the banks, wat plans did they make for the news to reach all this pple?

    ReplyDelete
  24. It's really a shame, and that is why Nigeria as a country is not making progress in various sectors,we cannot just make sacrifice to address issues,we always make flimsy excuse why we can't and that's why we re stagnated. Fela anikulapo kuti once stated how Nigerians are too scared that they prefer to manage in suffering that to stand in one voice for their right.

  25. Abeg!
    Is it by force?
    What is my business sef?

  26. The economy has been very hard on the citizens since Buhari came to power. Most Nigerians are living from hand to mouth. They have no time to boycott anything right now.

  28. Nigeria na country? Mtcheww that is why I don't help our people,we are not united, selfish, heartless mumus

  29. Much publicity was not given that is why. We Nijas no dey play with our monies ooo

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't mind the. The charges should increase then they would know how far

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nigerians sha... I did participate cos I refused not to deposit my brother's school fee (160k) yesterday. Cos I thought we were on d same page, thought Nigerians wanted to show them that d consumer is KING

  33. Lol. I am guilty oh. Was already in the bank wen i remembered!
But stellahipsy, ppl gat business to tk care of na. Wud u blame them?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Na so our own dey for this side.

Just last month, The Fenway Sports Group, owners of Liverpool FC decided to increase prices of tickets to about 73 pounds. Guess what happened at their next game. At the 73rd min, 10,000 Kop supporters stood up from their seats & moved towards the exit.

This dev't forced the owners to call an emergency board meeting the following to address the issue.

The prices were reverted back & they all lived happily ever after!

Now, wetin una think sey for happen if a Nigerian club had done that? Na so so complain we for dey here dey complain with taking a decisive stance & steps to address the issue. It's a 'Nigerian problem' Mrs. Kork!

O.Y.O. Is ur case is the slogan here!

    *Ghanaman signing out*

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's so sad that the so called Nigerians who are complaining are still the ones that will not sacrifice anything to make the issue settled once and for all. Na wa! As for me, when my boss wanted me to do some banking transactions for him, i quickly convinced him to hold on until today because of the protest. How i wish Nigerians can just come out to fight for their right for real. Hian!

    ReplyDelete
  36. The information was late Stella. We would have planned. Let them do it again and inform us early enough

    ReplyDelete
  37. Eyah too bad there was no enuf support from Nigerians.
But i think the reason it happenend like dis was because people were not really aware dt something like dis was going to come up yesterday, no enough awareness.

Moreso, this is salary payment week and people need money.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Huh? Seriously? Like how would EVERY NIGERIAN boycott banking when most didnt even know of the campaign, like apart from blogs was there any other awareness? Abeg abeg.
That "Nigerian will never cease to amaze me" part nor follow. So if i have an important transaction to make that is life changing or life saving because i want to be a conformist i should let the opportunity slip or let someone die? When it is my money i want to collect?
If im sounding ignorant forgive me because i didnt bother to read the post days back , because i know it wont mean anything to me.
They should try other measures .this one wont work.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Pls let's reschedule this protest.this one lacked awareness n publicity.

    ReplyDelete
  40. But of course it was a flop....there wasn't enough awareness. The literates aren't the only ones who make use of bank services. And even majority of these ones didn't know about it. I mean, for a movement that had started since, most of us only just found out when Stella posted. But what about the non-reading community? The artisan, nanny, pepper seller, mechanic etc. Who do not read. Who do not trust the several other available channels of transaction. They walk into the bank for the littlest withdrawal/deposit. But who i believe would have partaken in this movement had proper enlightenment and awareness been done. After all even they are being charged and imagine the frustration of not understanding what is happening to their money. They'll gladly partake in anything that stops the charges.
Abeg, It isn't that we do not have one voice but i blame that the awareness wasn't enough!
Stella you've been swallowing my comments. Biko post!

    ReplyDelete
  41. hmmn...1) the notice wasnt given early enough.
    2) we wr supposed to get paid on monday and i was as broke as having 68naira in my account that when the alert came i dont know how i found myself at the atm. lol

    ReplyDelete
  42. Abeg leave that thing, it's our money so we have to stay very close, all this bankers are thieves.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hello Stella,

I agree with you that it was a flop, but why was it a flop? I stand to be corrected but I think the only publicity done was on social media, NO TV, NO RADIO etc. How did we expect those that don't check Facebook and blogs to know about it? Also, as it is always said "money matter na serious matter" many transactions must be done in banks especially to the many people that don't believe in these modern forms of banking (ATM, Internet banking etc.)

It was a good cause but the way about it was wrong.

Nigerians keep calling call centres by 1,2 am and they re not abroad o. U ll continue queuing and wasting ur airtime and it can never be toll free. What can we do nothing. U initiate transactions it ll show u failed and u ll b debited over and over ur beneficiary ll not get the fund. Use atm u ll b debited without getting fund and it ll take u weeks for reversal. What can u do nothing! Nonsense! No banking day ko no banking day nii. Joor where's my coffee before I catch pneumonia

  45. Loool Madam Stella the campaign was publicised online, is it all Nigerians that use the Internet or know what this campaign is about. Also na who protest help for Nigeria?? Its not the banks fault rather cbn cause it sets the rules. So if they want to protest they should go to senate to petition cbn, not banks that are just following rules

  47. A lot of Nigerians do not follow the news, all they read are blog gossips. I was aware of the planned 'No banking day' since early February. The campaigners have been on various TV programs to speak about it, yet una dey claim say una no hear! Selfish lots!

    ReplyDelete
  48. The notice was short, most of the business people who don't have access to blogs and our social media are not aware of it. It is the fault of the organizers better still file a class action against CBN.

  49. Had this been in Ghana, it would have worked! My country folk know how to stick together!
When we had our electricity problem last year, EVERYONE banded together and protested on the STREETS...not just on social media.
Even celebrities (whom people think have a comfy life) joined in. In fact, there were on most forefronts!
Nigerian celebrities would rather Instagram "push presents", Hermes bags and shopping trips abroad, than use their platform to speak on the pressing matters at hand!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Stella please don't blame the man on the street for not boycotting the bank yesterday...the awareness was a flop & I heard about it from this blog. What about the market women? students? that hospital patient that need to pay deposit if not no treatment etc?
No radio jingles,no announcement anywhere (if you heard say so cos I didn't) so how was it supposed to be successful ? Moreover the banks didn't impose the charges...CBN did & wouldn't it make more sense to carry placards at all their offices nation wide & protest abi bankers no go comply to the dictates of their oga?
Well my office did banking work yesterday oh yes! Subcontractors have to be paid, workers have to chopulate salary abi no be so? and these things na signed & sealed standing orders with the bank that can't be changed anyhow. Next time, there should be more awareness, more airtime on radios& t.v stations, newspapers publications etc then the impact will be felt & the system will know we mean business.
