NJC bars Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia for misconduct

The National Judicial Council says it has sanctioned a judge serving in the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, with a ban that rules her out of any possible elevation to a higher court throughout her career on the bench.

A statement by the NJC’s Acting Director, Mr. Soji Oye, on Wednesday also said the council warned the judge against any act of misconduct and placed her under its watch-list for four years.

The National Judicial Council says it has sanctioned a judge serving in the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court, Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia, with a ban that rules her out of any possible elevation to a higher court throughout her career on the bench.

Oye said the NJC headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, took the disciplinary action against Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia, after considering some petitions of alleged misconduct written against her especially the one by Victoria Ayeni alleging misconduct and injustice on the part of Hon. Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia for failing to deliver judgment in Suit No FHC/AB/CS/31/2011, a Pre-Election matter between Victoria A. A. Ayeni and Olusola Sonuga and 2 Ors.

    2. The question is, what did she do to warrant the penalty.
You might be judging her as intimidating because you are either having inferiority complex or you are not very intelligent.
      So,what crime did she commit?

  5. Madam Stella, this woman sure deserves this. The abuse of power by this woman is unprecedented, she has no courtesy whatsoever for the lawyers at the bar. She has held me personally to Ransome in court at the federal high Court, Abeokuta till 8pm before . she knows court sits by 9am and lawyers had been there waiting only for her to stroll in at 6.30pm with no apology whatsoever and still adjourned my case for no reason. In over 1year that my case was there, it never got to the trial stage not to talk of judgment. She insults lawyers and all. She once told a lawyer to crawl out on her knees before just cos she claimed she was side talking.I can go on and on, and she will tell you no one can do anything to her cos she knows people........

She went for break three times. I left court past 4 since morning. It just means she won't be considered for promotion. Na there she go retire. So much for she is untouchable. Oba alaseju alasete

  8. This is really bad, imagine being pegged in a position for ever. Am guessing it could be bribery related since the office that brought the issue to limelight is election related, even if that is the case it's well known that almost all the judges are guilty of this same offense so why single her out for this grave penalty? Or is she the only one caught red handed? If it's someone else from another zone of the country am sure the punishment wouldn't be this stiff as a matter of fact, the case may not even be exposed.mcheeeew.

She does as she please, several cases in her court that have not been heard once after being assigned to her 3years ago.

It's always a shocker for people that practice law in different jurisdictions to come home and see the abuse of power. Even those who practice medicine in different countries can relate with this

  14. Stells, actually, there are stiffer sanctions like outright dismissal/sack or a compulsory retirement. She's still a sitting judge for all intents and purposes, just that she is on 4 year probation and will never ascend to an higher court.

What that means is, she will remain at the Federal High Court until she retires, one way or another. Ordinarily, a High Court Judge can be elevated to the position of a Justice of the Court of Appeal and finally, a Justice of the Supreme Court (JSC), which is the highest level at the bench and any serious minded judge strives for several elevations during his/her career at the bench before retirement. Unfortunately, she may as well kiss goodbye to any such aspiration due to the ban.‎

The word "misconduct" is all encompassing. Any abuse of a judge's judicial powers, comes under misconduct. Accepting bribes, gross judicial rascality, disregarding the professional ethics etc, all come under misconduct. However she was pegged as failing to deliver judgment on a pre-election petition, as one of the many petitions levelled against her. It appears this was the last straw that broke the already injured proverbial camel's back. The judiciary protects its own so for Justice Ajumogobia to be publicly shunned, she must have really overstepped her bounds. She's still a sitting judge albeit under probation, that's why the NJC was silent on the other alleged misconduct.

This will certainly act as a deterrent to other Judges guilty of similar offences.

  20. Hmmmm stella, this one is too small!! This woman deserves to be removed from the bench totally!!! Stella this woman can kill any lawyers career with her words and actions. I happen to be in court one day when a lawyer just mentioned that the matter was supposed to come up on the last adjourned day but my lord was very strong, she asked does that mean she was sick, the lawyer said no oo my lord cannot be sick.. Stella what this woman said that day made me vow never to enter that court again. She said it's u and ur generation will die with sickness, I have said it and it will happen, I am the one they call a witch and I have said so, your generation will be so sick no money can cure them.. Stella this man was in shock, almost in tears as he couldn't even say anything and she went ahead to dismiss the case.. Stella trust me every lawyer that has been to her court will tell you this punishment is too small for her. Trust me she should have been removed.

  21. Stella I had to go annoynymous for this one. She is tough as nails and not in a good way, she sits by 11 as opposed to the mandated 9am and she will listen to two cases then go on a 'short tea break' which means she won't be back till 3pm. Mind you she has about 30 cases on the list so when she comes back she will tell the rest of us to take adjournments cos the weather is too hot for her fair skin. I have 3 cases pending before her and the last time she heard me in any of them was February 2013, everyday I go is adjournment. If you are female and ur make up is on point I pity you. She will just look for a way to pick on you and embarrase you in court and this is really strange cos she really is beautiful and shouldn't ever feel threatened. The only way your case can make progress in her courtroom is if you are a senior advocate or your surname is well know ( yep she is elitist as well) all this will not be so bad if she really knows the law but that's another zero, listen to her judgements and proceedings and u will just be sad for the Nigerian legal system. If another judge had commited the number of offences or had as many petitions written against them, they will be disbarred completely but Ofili's connection are too strong. I hope all young lawyers see her as how not to abuse your position.

  25. Stella, I feel so pained for this cheap punishment given to this mad woman. I appeared before her In FHC Abeokuta and she made me hate courts. She sat only once out of four times and she sat at 2pm from 9am. She abused and insulted lawyers that day hen, then after calling two matters, she went on break and we waited till 7, only for her to call that she wasn't feeling fine. in any sane country, this woman should have been debarred by now. shame
