March 1st Is #NoBankingDay

Today is #‎NoBankingDay

Dear Nigerian Consumer,
Today, March 1, 2016, we probably stand on the threshold of history as we resolve to boycott ALL banking services for 24 hours in protest of excessive bank charges.

Though the timing and resources for creating awareness for a national consumer action was limited, we were amazed by the zeal, support, and dogged determination of thousands of Nigerian consumers who have taken the simple suggestion of a fellow consumer, Mr Dipo Adedoyin, and made it into a consumer movement that has attracted national, regional and international media coverage from CCTV News, MSBC, BBC Hausa World Service, TVC Africa, Core TV News, NN24, Channels TV, AIT, LTV, MiTV, Silverbird, over 30 radio stations across Nigeria from Kaduna to Port Harcourt, uncountable online News media including Sahara Reporters and The Cable, numerous bloggers, OAPs.

Most importantly, we owe today to the individual consumers who owned the campaign because they could identify with the cause, being daily perplexed by the unexplainable charges banks deduct from their accounts with obvious impunity.

As you chose to make the sacrifice of a #NoBankingDay today so Nigerians can have#‎BetterBankingServices in the future, you can rest assured that your sacrifice, no matter how small, could be the catalyst for a safer, fairer and more just consumer sensitive environment.

No matter the number of consumers who resolve to or not to abstain from banking services today, YOU can proudly say, you took action to improve Nigeria; you stood up to be counted; you said "Enough is Enough"! You are the living example and fulfillment of the first two lines of our National Anthem " Arise O Compatriots, Nigeria's call obey"!

Whatever the outcome of today's boycott, the #NoBankingDay Movement is already a success. We succeeded in drawing global attention to the problem of excessive charges and poor service delivery in our banking industry; we succeeded in making these excesses a topical national issue; we succeeded in waking up the latent consumer power within us; we succeeded in galvanizing each other towards fighting for our rights; we succeeded in coming to the realization that Nigerian consumers deserve better!

Keeping the banks idle today by whatever percentage will be the icing on the cake!
As you observe the #NoBankingDay today, we ask that you do so as law abiding citizens. This is a PASSIVE protest. There are NO planned rallies or gatherings today. Everyone should go about their businesses normally, just AVOID ALL BANKING HALLS, TRANSACTIONS, ATMS AND ONLINE! The aim is to show them that if we don't patronize their services, they cannot charge us excessively.

After today, follow up action shall be announced. This Movement is a marathon and we are totally committed to staying with it until we get all excess charges reviewed and our rights protected, even if we have to declare a #NoBankingDay EVERY MONTH or picket EVERY Central Bank Office nationwide!

Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria CAFON, Market Ombudsman MO, Consumer Rights Project CRP, Consumer Awareness Organization CAO, Foundation for Defence of Consumer Rights FODCOR, Consumers Empowerment Organization of Nigeria CEON, United Consumers Association UCAN, Consumer Campaign Foundation CCF & Consumer Rights Advancement Organization CRADO, under the aegis of the Coalition of Consumer Associations of Nigeria CONCA, reaffirm our commitment and resolve to stay the course until your consumer rights are respected. Your continued support and readiness for action is all we ask from you.

Don't forget to share your #NoBankingDay stories on all platforms, call in to your favorite radio and TV stations, chat with friends, colleagues and neighbors. Let's keep the conversation going!
Happy #NoBankingDay!

  17. All of you complaining I dare you to start providing services free. Rubbish. You want to keep money in the bank, withdraw, transfer, use atm etc all for free?????? Are you guys for real??? Even the ones that clean houses charge money!!!!! No one provides services free but NGOs who receive grants and etc. The most annoying is the ones that talk about banking abroad when they haven't smelt abroad before! Banking abroad is free right? I hear you! Silly twats. Please stay away from the banks and at least we will have small peace of mind from whiny manner less people called customers like you. The customers that truly know the value of banking services are cultured respectful and carry out their transactions well. They will come to the bank today and carry out transactions. They will receive attention from bank staff and get value for their patronage. Stay there and want free everything ole! Free banking, free tv, free taxi, free cinema, free airline ticket, free light okwia? Rubbish. Even you Stella, why don't you provide advert services free? Why do you take money for adverts???? Imagine the rubbish!!!! The ones that come to show off their cakes, do they bake for free?????? Abeg Jo

  26. what is #nobankingday# abeg make una allow my stingy lebanese company to try and pay that their allawee they called salary. foreigners will come and possess our land and we will be worshiping them like gods. sometime i wish i have edo power to bewitch them. my salary is not even upto their weekly allowance, they still pay them at the end of the month (in dollar oh) they have drivers, cooks, stewards, laundry man, free house, cars, free traveling fare etc. not even a staff bus for we home staff. what nonsense! they don't allow staff to form union, no association, no co-operative, nothing nothing. if u talk they will fire u and tell u there are more then 70 million unemployed people in Nigeria. my boss will talk to me like am her dog that licks her ass. she will make mistakes and put it on my head. if i try to defend myself she will shut me up like am a baby. if u challenge them, they will order our own Nigerian mopol to throw u out of the premises. they hire and fire like tomorrow no dey. they drop staff without notice and retrench without pay off.
they even control the bank and their managers. they give them instructions to block someone's account for the person not to have access to his or her account.
what nonsense #Nobankingday# abeg am tired of ranting, make i check my phone weather alert don show. i believe in better Nigeria. one day everything will make perfect sense. it might not be now. but definitely it will happen in our life time.
