Kaduna state governor Nasir el-Rufai has been dragged to court by a Kaduna-based lawyer, Maxwell Kyon, over his administration’s free school feeding programme.....
According to Punch El-Rufai flagged-off the free feeding programme for 1.8 million primary school pupils in the state in January, which according to him was the beginning of a different phase of the state government’s project to expand access to education.
Addressing a Kaduna chief magistrates court 4 on Tuesday, March 1, Kyon argued that there was no need for the state government to feed schoolchildren in the state. According to him, the free feeding programme was unconstitutional.
Leading the legal team for the Kaduna governor, Sanusi Usman, the director of litigation of the state Ministry of Justice argued that Kyon had no grounds to challenge the programme.
The case was adjourned till March 17, for hearing by the chief magistrate, Mairo Muhammed.
However, parents under the aegis of Concerned Parents of Public School Pupils have declared that nothing can stop the free feeding initiative.
One of the parents, James Ogwoche said: “We are telling anybody who has any minority view over the Kaduna state’s free feeding programme to leave parents and government alone. I don’t know why some people always go against a good initiative.”
According to him, the programme had been beneficial to his two sons in a primary school in the state.
Senator Danjuma Laah, representing Kaduna south senatorial zone, had earlier criticised the programme which he described as a deliberate attempt by Governor El-Rufai to score curious political points.
He noted that the sum of N90 million per day or N450 million per week used in feeding pupils could have been used to improve the quality and quantity of school infrastructure and teaching aids in the state.
Their problem
ReplyDeleteHeheheheheheheehehehhehehehe
DeleteThe program is just another corruption, they only want to use it to steal money when he is out of government u would be shocked how much they would claim they have spent on the program.
ReplyDeleteOn point
ReplyDeleteHmmmmm,na waooo
ReplyDeleteGod help us in this country o.
ReplyDeleteBut that money as calculated above can be used as adviced by the Lawyer now, instead of using it to feed d students.
playing politics with our future leaders! if the govt. stops the project now, the same people will start another criticism of a failed campaign promise
ReplyDeleteSpeechless
ReplyDelete90million per day is totally absurd. That money can be used to better teachers lives and provide basic infrastructure that will enhance learning. I don't support feeding school children. It makes no sense.
ReplyDeleteOne of APC's weak/stupid/senseless INITIATIVES so far.

ReplyDeleteHaba! That's an outrageous amount na
ReplyDeleteI am a Lawyer. I know Maxwel Kyon Esq. very well. He is very wrong in all this. He knows that cant sue a State government in a Magistrate court. He has however achieved his aim which is to gain fame.
ReplyDeleteThis is wrong at all levels. Southern Kaduna activism shouldn't becloud Maxwell Kyon's judgement as to know the difference between a sound governmental policy and a sham one.
ReplyDeleteHe knows better than suing the State government in a Magistrate court. He shouldn't have done that.
This isn't just about feeding.
ReplyDeleteIt's about giving these people incentives for going to school. Many of them don't go to school and will rather beg for alms or do odd jobs.
If you give them a meal a day, they will definitely show up.
Th governor also has to improve scool conditions, teacher welfare etc.
Do you know how many students there are, pls 90 million naira per day to feed all school children isn't too much please.
Do you know how many jobs are being created indirectly, from the agric sector, to transport, to cooks, to servers etc.
Teachers also eat from these meals o.
90 million per day for one slice of rotten yam and one slice of tomato in a nylon bag. El Rufai is an armed robber, yes a robber armed with trappings of executive authority. God punish him
