Nigerian Senate Rejects Bill Seeking Gender Equality In Marriage

The Nigeria Senate on Tuesday blocked a bill seeking equal marital rights for women.

The bill, titled “Gender Parity and Prohibition of Violence against Women”, was presented by Abiodun Olujimi, representing Ekiti south, during the senate’s plenary session.
According to Mrs. Olujimi, the bill would seek equal rights for women in marriage, education and job.

She said if the bill was passed, a widow in Nigeria would automatically become the custodian of her children in the event of the death of her husband, and would also inherit his property.

The deputy senate president, Ike Ekeremadu, supported the bill. He said Nigeria would develop if women were given the same rights men have.
“Only last night, I was going through a document prepared by George Bush of America. Those countries that are doing well are those who give women opportunities,” he said.

“Where I come from, women don’t eat egg and are restricted from touching the non-essential parts of animal. But now that has changed. What is needed is time and education, not necessarily legislation. We will continue to encourage our women. I support this bill”, he said.

The Senate Majority leader, Ali Ndume, criticised the bill, and urged Nigerians to stick with either religious or traditional marriage.
Sani Yerima, a senator from Zamfara state, condemned the bill, arguing that it was in conflict with the Nigerian Constitution.
He said the bill negates the principles of the Sharia law, which the Constitution recognises.

The bill was defeated when the senate president, Bukola Saraki, put it to vote.

    5. Honestly I'm indifferent about this bill or the debate thereof. And I imagine the overzealous feminists already on their toes, ready to attack with their nostrils enlarging with venomous arguments on why this should be passed..lol. These are the ones that worry me.

Let's just say I'm comfortable with what we've always had as regards this gender ish, not to take away the rights of any woman... But away from human rights, our Constitution or its interpretation.. like was suggested up there, let's just allow tradition take preeminence and maintain what we've always had. After all it is only in exceptional cases that some women suffer gender inequality or are abused by the ignorant males around them.

I also think that highlighting this will only attract and stir up unnecessary feminism ish by females who cannot manage their rights and ego, and those who would think that they are now free to compete with their male counterparts.

Of course only the shallow ones will misinterpret this bill. But I'm more for the overall effect it'll have on every female in Nigeria. Again, only a very few will understand how to manage it.

Yea, u may not agree with me but this is my opinion darlings.

Women should not give up on this bill until its becomes a law in Nigeria. We only need to go back and strategically bring it on in a much better way.

  21. Besides the fact that there just has to be a specified rule of order in homes, gender equality shouldn't raise so much dust. Why kick against it if you have no bossy intentions? Some just enjoy wanton towering which is often an illiterate getsure. Your wife is your partner, your other half, your pair. Heirachy comes handy in division...except that's what you breed. My wife should share equal rights with me as long as she can handle it. I won't marry who can't.
I'm a man, I would support the bill still.

  24. when you want to sponsor a bill, you need to make it less ambiguous, the tittle of the bill should not at face value give every detail of what the bill contains. The title "women equality " gave the bill away already but that's not even what the entire bill is all about More importantly I hope we're gradually seeing that the south and north do not have the same concept of life and living and the sooner we accept this the better for us, whether we agree or decides to cuss ourselves does not solve anything but moving forward is for all our good. I hope we know what moving forward entails.

The writer asked if women are ready to share equally share children's school fees, house rent, feeding money, and also if woman are ready to start playing bride price.
Such a woman will never have any problem with her DH.

I weep for women in this country...it's only a few widows that have the backbone to fight their wicked heartless in law after the death of their husbands. Thank God for my father ...1st man in my village to decree that no woman in the family should be forced to scrap her hair when his father (my grandpa) died including the widowed wife. We all both male & female have inheritance in my father's house...contract workers farm on the land & remit money to me. How many men can do such? We need to start taking the plight women go through more serious in this country.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Please most of the issues contemplated by this bill have been taken care of by the Constitution and a plethora of Supreme Court authorities. What we need to change is our mentality and practise all these things we preach in our daily lives and dealings with our women. Enactment of more laws isn't the way forward.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Shame on some women who support the disgusting decisions of the majority of our stupid senators. It is women like you people that will keep putting your kind down. Nigerian women need to be more socially conscious. The fact that conversations about gender issues in our society are met with a lot of apathy by women is a massive impediment to making a Nigeria a better country for all women. It doesn't matter whether you feel like your status in life means that some of these issues do not affect you as much.

Let me tell you about a colleague of mine from somewhere in Abia, (bende region). Her husband died very mysteriously making her a young widow still in her early 20s with kids. Before his body was cold his brothers drove this lady out of her husband's house, and reclaimed all the man's properties. Worst of all they drove her back to her family with her kids. Till this very day they have neglected the family. The lady and her kids have no claim to their father's assets. This is the tradition in that part of the country and many others.

What this bill seeks to do is stop such injustice in the name of religion and tradition. It seeks to protect women from domestic violence and discrimination. The fact that some women don't believe in this cause baffles me. Yerima a known husband to an under-aged bride struck the bill down based on Sharia (the same justification for the marriage of under-aged brides by his like) Ali Ndume who made a very disrespectful and sexist joke on the floor of the house on international women's day struck the bill down and encouraged Nigerians to stick with antiquated traditional and religious standards (the same standards that keep women down in our society). Ike Ekweremadu the deputy senate president who supported the bill said what was needed was education not legislation undermined his own support with his comment. It is also important to note that most of those against this bill are from a certain part of the country. We need to become more progressive in this country for the betterment and development of the society.

    1. Hmmm..interesting analysis. Btw I'm one of those who isn't particularly bothered about the stalling of this bill. It however doesn't make me a subservient woman or less enlightened.

Every woman can still get her individual right and justice in whatever be her predicament. There are subsisting laws that treat the disservice to any woman. They just wanted a compendium of those rights passed into law. That it didn't work does not invalidate the existing laws.

  41. I find this so astonishing..
    Keeping tradition aside.
Most of the women bashing the out come of these bill, are the same that go to church every day.
I wonder what they all go to church for.
Oh yeah I know why they go to church..
For miracle to happen in their lives.
I bet they never open a page of that so called bible to read trough.
Your can as well advocate for same sex marriage(relationship).
    Truth be told.
It is not in our nature(Black race)to accept hypocritical ideologies such as these.
If you are not happy about the failure of the bill, and you so much want to be like Oyibo, you can relocate to the western world biko.

The only way for Men is MGTOW
