Senator Ben Bruce Says No One Should Blame Buhari For The Fall Of Naira...

''Many Nigerians are complaining about the constant fall in the value of the Naira and they blame the Government.
But is the government really to blame?

In truth, our insatiable appetite for all things foreign is to blame.

I always fly Arik Business Class whenever I am traveling abroad except Arik does not fly on that route.
Not only is an Arik ticket a fraction of the cost of a British Airways ticket, but the money I pay to Arik circulates in Nigeria and helps firm up the Naira’s value.
As I speak to you today, a British Airways Business to London is ₦2,103,666 while Arik Business is ₦551,545 yet our elite still fly BA..

But though Arik offers an affordable alternative to British Airways and other foreign airlines, our big men prefer to pay double what Arik charges to BA and other foreign airlines for the same services and yet they complain about the value of the Naira.

I have Nasco cornflakes and I have eaten Kellogs cornflakes. In terms of nutrition and taste they are almost indistinguishable. Yet our elite who will rather eat Kellogs than Nasco cornflakes, wonder why the Naira is falling!

Even something like Quaker Oats can be substituted with corn meal known locally as pap.Obasanjo Farms of Nigeria and other large scale poultry farms have the capacity to provide chicken for the entire nation. Since that is the case, why are we even buying imported chicken?

In fact what is wrong if every family in Nigeria has a poultry in their backyard to give them eggs and meat?

My steward went to Makoko, which is one of the largest fishing communities in Lagos. He wanted to buy fish and they were selling imported frozen fish!
Yet in the very waters in front of them, there exist fresh fish that is more nutritious than the cheap frozen fish they were selling.
We keep spending over 1 Billion Naira importing rice when our own farmers are capable of meeting our national demand for rice. But for some reason, Nigerians just prefer to buy imported rice.

The imported rice we buy in Nigeria is not as good as our local rice because it has been stored for years in silos and treated with chemicals.
Moreover, every time you buy it, your money is going out of Nigeria to service an economy in Asia. The end result is that their currency gains value while ours loses value.

Have you ever wondered why European Premiership Clubs are so interested in Nigeria? It is because Nigerians spend billions traveling to Europe to watch their games, buy their merchandise and promote their leagues.
Yet, back at home, we would not be caught dead watching our own local league.
If we will not spend money on made in Nigeria goods and services, how can we expect our Naira to hold its value and appreciate?

Obviously we can not cut ourselves off from the world. No nation is an island, but at least we can fly Nigerian airlines, eat locally produced food and patronize our football league.
If we do this, not only will our economy grow and produce jobs for Nigerians, it will also make our goods and services improve in value such that they will be attractive enough to be imported.

I bought Innoson vehicles as official cars for my staff. I have never lived to regret it one day. They are comfortable and durable. But most of all, I know that my purchase helps to keep jobs in Nigeria and improve the value of the Naira.
I urge you to do the same. We have no other country but Nigeria and it is you and I that will make it what it is.
If we buy Naija We Will Grow Naira
My name is Ben Murray-Bruce and I just want to make Commonsense!

    2. It really hurts me when people blame Buhari for all these. The least we can do is to support someone that is not stealing from us. Rich people wants devaluation, the naira should not be devalued so they can follow and suffer for once.

    3. SEN BEN BRUCE, PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH. YOUR PARTY WAS FAR FROM TRULY NIGERIAN

      Who is Genuine in Nigeria?

Senator Ben Murray Bruce turned 60 yesterday, he took the opportunity to launch his book "The Common Sense Revolution" but it's sad to see that the event in its totality portrays the average Nigerian Politician.

Usually, I hate to attend these so called "Big" events but it was Ben Bruce, the common sense guy, I jumped at the Opportunity to go with my department, department of Mass Communication, University of Lagos as we were invited with a letter and we were feeling all important. We didn't know it was an invitation to humiliation.

At the venue, we were told to go upstairs, we didn't mind, as they said that area was reserved for students. Getting there, I realized it was a perfect view to watch the "Elites" wine and dine. Still, we didn't care. We only began to care when the ceremony kept going on and all tables kept getting additional contents and we were just there, like Observers. Don't forget that we were invited, as I said earlier.

While all of that kept happening, I still didn't care because they said every guest will get a free copy of the book. I wanted the book so, I waited on. At the end, only the guests got the Book. I had to look at our invitation to be sure we were guests. Yes, we were guests but the stiff class stratification that Senator Bruce Criticizes came to play.

It's so sad to see that the actions of the Common Sense Guy justifies the "Common Sense is not so common" statement.

Since I know it's all fake, I'd like to give a professional PR advice. It's so bad, if you invite Nigerian Students, who will, to a large extent, determine your political success, to an event only for them to watch you and your rich friends dine. Their votes aren't even enough.

Writing a book about Common Sense doesn't actually make you have Common Sense. We aren't hungry people. We are Unilag Students and we are contented with what we have, we wouldn't go to shop 10 to sweet-talk anyone about common sense, just to get rice.

Happy Birthday, Senator Ben! Thanks for the deceit, segregation and above all, thanks so much for the Palm oil made Jollof Rice with a meat-like object.

I am Abidemi Adesokan, A concerned Nigerian Student who believes there is hope for Nigeria, but Bruce isn't just that guy.

      Please Read and share!

    4. Anon I'm sure you know not everyone got the supposed book even the politicians..

Also did you expect Ben Bruce to come and share rice and meat personally to you people??

So your aim of going to the party was to eat rice and meat collect book and take selfies with the important people??

      Because that's your only complain

You don't have any complain at all except for this

Did you expect him to be every where the same time?? It was his birthday. He was too busy enjoying his day

It's like asking a bride why she didn't leave where she was sitting and enjoying her day to come and attend to you..

He already handed everything to people to do..
Some times Nigerians don't even know what exactly is there problem

    5. Welcome to the club. Only those who have experienced Ben Bruce know that he is all talk No action. Nigerians are not fools and he will soon be seen for who he really is. A no good misplaced businessman trying to get his hands on Nigeria's money. Ben does not even have a degree! How on earth does he think he can run Nigeria when he can't even run his company. He is a no good opportunist. Sorry you had to suffer the humiliation to realise Ben Bruce is a fake wanna be.

LMAO, please you shall remain on twitter till you make it, don't get fooled. Buhari appointed young people and ya all think it is easy, oya even as a guest for a few hrs event, you weren't seen as worthy cos you would have polluted the entire scene with your poverty! That is the way Rich people think. Why are you putting this up,i guess you are hurt? Next time think twice before you allow politicians use you to truncate Buharis agenda.
You want an apology? He will pay an English graduate 20k to do that.
      Next time,know your class!

I just hope they didn't spend their school fees to buy suit and evening gowns. It is only on social media that everybody can come and rub shoulders,in the real sense, things are real and the concept of class cannot be over emphasised.
Bruce might not even be aware of how they are treated, I am sure it is one bouncer with poverty mentality that will do that. Poor people working for rich men are the ones that enforce CLASS for them.

Please let's forget what APC said out of ignorance and lack of knowledge and forge ahead already,THE GOVT IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE NAIRA FALL

A tip though, Pres. Buhari should call for the best men and women in economics, world trading etc, even those in the diaspora. Place them on an agreed salary and watch as they brain storm.

During Jonathan's regime. Sanusi had the best men behind the scene churning out policies and making sure things didn't spiral out of control. The last regime was filthy with corruption but they got somethings right.

A lot of focus should be on Agriculture too. I keep saying "YouWin" helped a lot of SMEs,but people have argued that there was fraud there too. What to do? Sanitise the whole process instead of tossing it and the little good projects the last regime had in a trash... Rebrand if possible, it can even be called BuhaWin,heck! 23. This is exactly what I been saying and discussing with my friends, we spend more importing than patronising our Nigerian products. Why cant we wear made in nigeria cloths?. Govt should encourage the local manufacturers, give soft loans and grants to people, graduates, to get equipment. Govt should also ban importation of all foods, cloths, vehicles and brand new cars too etc. All these toyota, honda and the rest will be forced to open plants here in nigeria to assemble their cars in Nigeria, they will also employ 80percent Nigeria staff, thereby boosting the economy, create employment. You hardly see other country products in the US, this is because they value their economy. We all need to have a positive thinking!. Government should give a target to ban some importation else the naira will keep having a free fall. Our pharmaceutical companies should also be looked into, more research should be done so we can get good drugs; we already have varieties of medicinal plants that cure a lot of diseases. Let's eat our locally made rice too, use our locally made cream, soap, shoe, bag etc and see the naira rise.. This is the only country we have so we should change our mindset and patronise our locally made products. Lots of talents and materials are wasting away..

    1. The government has to bale the cart concerning any situation at hand because they are at the helm of affairs and have to answer to us, the people. As to patronizing local, the government still has a lot to do. For local industries to thrive, there should at least be basic amenities, such as electricity, good roads and security. Also, standards and quality has to be maintained. Our exports are not respected because of low quality. You can't force me to spend good money buying something of poor quality, when I can get something much better that is foreign. It is not about being simplistic and saying "buy Nigeria". The right things have to be done for us to move forward or we are deceiving ourselves.

    2. Please our government should always be accountable and stop passing the buck. They should learn to face and deal with situations instead of always looking for who to blame. Will that help us? Bernard, you are right that we should by Nigeria, but what is the government doing to support this? You are wrong to say we should not blame the president. He is at the helm of affairs now and should do the necessary. We always should demand that our leaders be accountable, no matter who they are. Should we start blaming Obama, or an ex-president no longer in power? It is not about what has happened in the past, but what is currently being done to mitigate those past wrongs. Enough said.Bernard I expect more from you than this.

  24. I don't blame Buhari for the nose dive in the naira

    But I blame him for
1... Acting like he could make the naira better
2... Using the 216 to a dollar that time to campaign against Jonathan saying he would make a dollar to a naira
    3. For making some ignorant people think he could control oil price and they bought the lies and voted him based on that
    4. For not taking Alot of advice I heard has been passed down to him since all this issues started. Note that the things he was advised on won't take effect now But a year later but he was asked to make hay while the sun shine but he has refused

    4. For not offering solutions on how to overcome this turbulent times but instead thinking it's a phase that would pass. Of which it won't if we don't do things accordingly..

    5. For bad supply of electricity. He has been in power for almost a year and no good power supply. It's even worse now
Tarrifs are high. With this high Tarrifs how are industries suppose to make goods that would be cheap. This is the problem.

I have been saying it. Electricity should be something we should enjoy. I pay my tax and I don't even enjoy it. Electricity is the basis of having a good economical country. With electricity we would be able to products products at low cost. People won't see the need to buy made in China . Importers would invest in the country instead of taking their money to another country..

No Nigerian will see something sold for 500 and another sold for 300 and not buy the one of 300. Especially when the one for 300 is better than that of 500. That is the problem with the China made and Nigeria made. By the time you calculate your cost for buying in China and landing cost, you make more gain that the manufacturing company producing in Nigeria

We know things can't get better in a year but we should start focusing and building the foundation for tomorrow now

Infact, I think electricity company should be privatized like telecommunication and one person shouldn't be giving the monopoly

Let it be like telecommunications where we have glo, mtn, after and Etisalat.

If we have different options for electricity, there will be competition, lower tarrif and better services.

This will help industries to perform better and churn out quality products are low cost. Then we should have bodies like SON check standards and be able to export.

But when we keep doing nothing, we would keep falling

  28. Once there is assurance of quality I'll patronise made in Nigeria. Simple.

Corruption, ineffectiveness, sheer greed and laziness have crept into every facet of our lives. Every system is rotten and rotting away.

Fly arik hmm. The experience people have had there...

If you go to agric all manner of pesticides and poor produce. Fish ok I can buy that.

Shoes will disgrace you by opening at the wrongest moment. That's when you manage to find a fine one. Smh.

He should encourage Nigerians instead to start producing as good as the competition and stop looking for the cheapest ways to make stuff.

In short, better quality, better patronage.

  30. Beht sir, ofada RICE IS COST!!! FREXSCH FIXSCH, IS COST!!!, And NO, Nasco does not taste nice. It is however very crispy and crunchy and I have been known to give my kids as a snack especially the 50 naira sachet, but maybe we also need to invest more in educating people to improve technology. Fishing technology, fish farming technology, agricultural technology, etc. Our technical institutions need to be given a boost and raised to the standard of Universities instead of being looked down upon. Had i known i would have traded my B.Sc for a technical degree of combined both. And might I add, these "advances and innovations" must be achieved in a sustainable matter. Our problem is education, and not just education from school, National re- orientation is needed.
Look at fisheries, if you see the sea food we have off our coasts, chunky lobsters, king prawn, etc, they DO NOT MAKE IT INTO THE NIGERIAN MARKET, they are EXPORTED! In addition, what body regulates these fishing practices??? How do we know that these fishing companies are not destroying the ecohabitat? Or overfishing? or fishing wrongly? Similarly agriculture, WHO IS REGULATING FERTILIZERS BEING USED? ARE THEY BEING MONITORED AT ALL? The government has to instill a level of trust for people to just be buying local like that. Re- orientation. Chai, my comment is all over the place but I know i made some salient points. Na vex de vex me for Naija o.
