MUST READ!
When the call came on Sept 13 2013, to serve the Nigerian people as DG National Center For Women Development, I took it as a call from God and I answered in the affirmative.
I served for 2years and five months and did my best under very difficult conditions. We hardly had money to operate and the place was badly run down. Worst, there was low moral and lack of commitment among the Staff. Most spent the day loitering and gossiping. Many would not show up for work or arrive 11 am, only to leave before 3 pm. Some were absent for months and we're just collecting their salary at home.
My administration changed all that. Most Staff were turned around and became passionate about the work, appreciating also the changes they thought were not possible but were happening right before them.
There remained though, a remnant who felt that the Center was their personal preserve and that the position of Director General should only go to someone from their part of the country. I was initially dismissed as just a Musician. When that did not work, I was targeted and abused for being an Igbo woman who came to give jobs to and elevate my people while sidelining them. When these detractors could not provide answers to the spate of improvement we were bringing, they resorted to sabotage and blackmail. The first such salvo was fired when a Senate Committee visited on an oversight mission a few months after my arrival. All three Generators at the Center were cannibalized, overnight, just hours to the visit.
We got over that incident and trudged on. The rest of our activities and accomplishments, modest as they is public knowledge. I have never in my life been an unfair person. I never favored any group I carried everybody along. But I did not put up with deliberate incompetence and a refusal to learn, an attitude of entitlement which some people displayed. We brought back a level of professionalism and commitment to deliver on our mandate. Without these attributes, the Center would have fallen apart.
When the call came for me to disengage from the Center, I took it in good faith and with thanksgiving to the Almighty, Yes some stakeholders were upset and tried to make a case for me to continue. Their effort was a testimony of God's grace on my administration, but I also knew that it was time to go. God who sent me there was taking me to a higher level of service. His infinite wisdom is unassailable. That is my faith. Besides, I was exhausted and had abandoned many personal projects to devote myself, 200% to the Center. The abuses and lack of cooperation from a mother Ministry, from those who felt that the Center overshadowed them, to the extent that they tried to discourage others from working with us, were just a bit much for my comfort.
I did not lobby for the job in the first place and I was not going to lobby to keep it. I actually looked forward to leaving. But some people were going to exact their pound of flesh.
They organized some staff, mostly Northerners, invited the Press and set about to disgrace themselves. By mid afternoon, while the Heads of Departments were putting together the handover notes, they seized the keys to my official car, even with my personal items still inside. Threats began to fly. "That Ibo woman must" "we will disgrace her".
Their Chief organizer, the Acting DG, went about whipping up ethnic sentiments against me. Late 2015, the same officer had gone to the Center's Mosque to ask for the issue of a Fatwa against me, claiming that I was working against the interest of the North. We nipped that in the bud by calling a townhall meeting and asking that proof be provided. The Fatwa was denied and peace reigned for a while.
Police was called in to the Center to escort me out and avoid blood shed as I disengaged. Eventually, in the midst of insults and name calling, with an angry baying crowd, some of whom were brought in from outside, I entered my official car and left. At no time during this melee did I threaten to sue Mr President for asking me to disengage. Why would I? Is it not within his authority. Even if it were not, is the Center my personal property. I had done my best and if it was time to go, it was that simpleLife continues.
I had a thriving career before my appointment. The Center did not make me. I have so much to do. I am a multitalented, multifaceted and multitasking child of God. By His grace, the future is greater. So what is the problem?
Let me say here that The Federal Government should really look into the Parastatals and take note of the fact that many people who work on them do not have the requisite qualification. Many contribute nothing and many see their job as personal entitlement. They are owed because Nigeria belongs to them and them alone. Somehow, these people were given the impression that they could attempt to do what they did to me and nothing would happen. That is very sad indeed. The Ministry also has a case to answer. They helped to create that impression. A situation where the Ministry could invite a Management Staff to a trip abroad without informing the DG and the Staff would only inform her principal via txt message, from the Airport as she is leaving the country, creates an atmosphere of indiscipline and anything goes.
The Ministry should restrain itself to its spelt out function and not undermine the authority of the DG.
Finally, I declare that I am a Nigerian citizen who should enjoy the rights attendant to that privileged. I am Onyigbo and proud of it. I respect myself and I love and respect all for who they are. We are all God's children. No one has the right to insult or abuse me or deprive me of my rights. Nigeria will not hold unless and until we all come to that realization.
Thank you and God bless.
Onyeka Onwenu (MFR)
Former DG NCWD.
hmmmmmmmm,,,,
Interesting but too long..
ReplyDeletePurging seriously, all my strength is gone
All of u should forget this rubbish onyeka onwenu wrote. I do not doubt that there might have been tribal coldwars going on there, but those who know this woman knows that she has a stinking behaviour. I can bet u that she was carrying herself about with unnecessary arrogance. Is she the only igbo DG that was sacked? ? Infact almost everyone from the last government irrespective of tribe was sacked. This lady is the last person anyone should trust. She stands for nothing as far as she's reaping from the government. Check her history guys..from babangida to abacha to obasanjo (who she was rumoured to be bedding), to jonathan. She suddenly remembered she was igbo because buhari sacked her and doesn't have her time. She has frolicked with all the mpst tyrannical governments in Nigeria at the expense of her people. But now all of a sudden, buhari has bounced her and she's talking nonsense. I am sure she was giving her workers, subordinates and even her superiors (ie ministers) attitude, hence the intense dislike. Madam go and sit down, you have no values, ypu stand for nothing only ur stomach. Igbos dont let this nonsense she wrote fool u! Which igbo she don help?? Mtcheew
DeleteYou said it all. God bless your brain
DeleteYou are very correct. With the way she was hobnobbing with Patience Jonathan all over the whole place and carrying campaign on her head, what did she expect? Was that part of her job description?
DeleteIt's obvious u ve never work in d Civil service so ain't surprised
DeleteNigerian civil servants don't want to work. They like salary and bribe but no work.
DeleteHmmm @Okwa. I'm sure I've heard this before o. Same thing u said. Heard she's got an attitude problem. Could all these people be telling lies against her? Na wa
DeleteHas anyone of u dealt with her personally? All we do in Nigeria na hear say.
DeleteMake u sef go bed ur own collect ur own appointment
I di very okay.
ReplyDeleteYes, some stupid northerners be acting as if Nigeria is for them alone. But this woman get her own problem oh!
DeleteNothing else beats ur self worth.
ReplyDeleteGlad she took it in good faith.
All these useless, retarded and lazy northerners be claiming the igbos wants to sideline them in situations such as the above.
No wonder they are still backward in education and everything within despite d amount of money being pumped in2 it's region on a daily
Word!!! You couldn't have said it any better.
DeletePlease you people should be saying "Northern Muslims", they are the problem. We the Christians here are suffering more in their hands. Wicked people!
ReplyDeleteGerraway u biko. All of una na the same. I wish we can wake up one day and all of u will have disappeared.
Deletehhhhhmmmmmmm.
ReplyDeleteNa wa oo
ReplyDeleteThe only thing I can say is that nigeria will remain the way it is if tribalism is not dealt with, God help us.
Tribalism isn't going anytime soon. Not when 'state of origin' is still in every form we fill.
DeleteExactly! @sassy
DeleteStella, this woman did a wonderful job on NCWD. The place was run down, deserted with unserious staff. When Ms. Onyeka took over, she completely turned it around. The staff were serious and the students that came to learn became serious. You could see the motivation they all had.
ReplyDeleteOn a side note , i want to appeal to youth, when next we want to vote, let us vote a capable person devoid of tribal sentiment or how long he has been campaigning.
I am not a fan of the past govt or this current one. I have not seen anything tangible he has done. He campaigned for more than 10 years without having a structure on ground incase if he is elected. The best Government is Pres. Obasanjo's govt for now. This present govt is focused on anticorruption without any development work. Focus on development work and employment, corruption will reduce.
I feel like what they are doing is a cunny ploy. Focus on corruption of the past government and people would forget they are spending some money from this administration they are not accounting for.
XOXO MYSTERY
Shut up,she went there and became power drunk.
DeleteGbam. You've Said all .
DeleteToday I will crush on you and lick your ass even if there is shit in it just for this comment you made. Touche!

ReplyDeleteHian!
ReplyDeleteIt is well with you madam.
ReplyDelete.....says Onyeka Onwenu.
ReplyDeleteWhat a Joke!!
I agree that Northerners can be out of line sometimed. Some fucked up group of people they are.
No offence to the educated and well behaved ones.
But Madam, relating to your history, i'd say there's no smoke without fire.
You are uncouth and you look down on people.
There's no way you didnt provoke those people in one way or the other.
Your story is too smooth and one-sided. We would be here to read the truth from you, when you are ready.
Thank God you are a NIGERIAN.
A very rude and wicked woman.
DeleteI disagree with you.My dear when you work for/with government you'll understand.I can totally relate with some of the things she said here.Especially if you're in the HQ.These people feel they own this country,so no other has the right to talk.Even among colleagues, you hear them say 'wetin this ibo woman dey talk' You shouldn't go beyond a certain level or hold certain sensitive positions just cuz you're not one of them. They forget that first, you are a Nigerian before any other thing. Things are really happening, especially in civil service.
DeleteTruth my sister
DeleteSometimes*
ReplyDeleteI love Onyeka Onwenu, and I totally get her point. This country was created on ethnic cleavages and that exists till date. May God bless you Ma in all your endeavours. And may God intervene in our country.

That's what happens when you mixed 'pleasure with work'. You were appointed to serve but you delved into politics by singing and flocking with politicians. Am sorry ma. It happens like this sometimes. Can we plz move on? Better opportunity awaits you. But don't derail again.
ReplyDeleteYes she was still thinking they would give her the local government elections she lost years ago.
DeleteDon't I just love this woman? Keep soaring ma'am

ReplyDeleteChristie
ReplyDeleteTk God u made it out alive to recount ur story. May God help us as a nation. May he help us realize dat one by accepting one another can we truly prosper as a nation.
That's y I have strong hatred fr d northerners.... they feel dis country belongs to dem...piece of shit
ReplyDeleteBnk
Wow, this is just wow. The northerners, especially the muslim ones always think they own Nigeria and I wonder why. Worst still, they have little or no regard for women. It is well with this country sha.
ReplyDeleteThey hate seeing women in authority. I think it hurts their ego. Those people don't just want any form of civilization in their place. To them, a woman is supposed to be under them and not above them.
DeleteGod will see us through in this stupid buhari regime
DeleteMy dear, from the bike men, to the fruit sellers,to the educated ones. I just smh for them
DeleteKeep quiet and take a seat. Was on yea onwenu not one of the women that used to clap for mrs patience jonathan and say sorry ma several times if patience coughed once? You got the position by bootlicking madam jonathan, not by merit. You were even one of the women that surrounded patience to say the chibok girls kidnapping was a lie to bring down jonathans Govt.
ReplyDeleteWhy Bring Igbo Tribalism into this matter...Address the issues and not i am ibo or not ibo ..trying to use tribe to distract from the issues against you abi??

ReplyDeleteYou have served this nation ma and congrats for your sacrifice. Truly, the Igbos are being attacked in this country and no tribe, i repeat, no tribe has had to face the kind of discrimination and structural marginalization meted out to the tribe yet people automatically attack them even without giving a chance. Life on earth and our actions would serve as the basis of judgment. Let us learn to live as one and stop being hypocritical as the same people who accuse other tribes are first to commit the same act to favour theirs. We need to fight the elements at the top who have stolen us dry, leaving majority of the populace with bitter and tribalistic minds.
ReplyDeleteI really understand the Igbo people. Always victimised in this country. They should just pack and face their Biafra state. Nigeria will be better without them.
DeleteAnd I am Yoruba and Hausa so insult if you want I don't care.

One Nigeria my ass!!...
ReplyDeleteThis is why we keep clamouring for Biafra!!...
Allow us to go!!...we want Biafra!!...
women centre didn't do anything special during Madam Owenu's time. she was very 'nose in the air' and never really interfaced with the Nigerian women for whom the centre was set up or with her parent Ministry. (Women Affairs)
ReplyDeleteall this talk about not having money, how will they give your office money when you don't have any proactive agenda for spending it to improve the lot of Nigerian women. abi they should just pump money into the centre's account whether you have a clear spending plan or not?
women's center didn't do anything new : apart from recycling same old same old year after year. an then their DG would burst into a song randomly, even during official meetings: a least now she can go back to her first love, which is singing.
Welldone madam
ReplyDeleteThey are empty but still think Nigeria belong to them
Now their Godfather is there to place in power.
WHICH WAY NIGERIA....HOW CAN WE MOVE FORWARD WHEN THE ETHNIC THREAD KEEPS PULLING US BACK
ReplyDeleteTHERE IS NO BETTER FIGHT TO FIGHT THAN THAT OF ETHNIC DISINTEGRATION...
GOD BLESS NIGERIA
Wow! This country is not united. No wonder we fail at most things we do.
ReplyDeleteWow! This country is not united. No wonder we fail at most things we do.
ReplyDeleteada riches...your fada...stupid idiot...are u a civil servant? what do you know? so because your mother is a prostitute u think onyeka slept with obasanjo? not all women are like your mother....stupid idiot
ReplyDeleteThere is no need increasing ethnic tension because you were removed from an office. Your music was listened to by all Nigerians including Hausas. This is just bitterness.
ReplyDelete
