Olajumoke Orisaguna: The Nigerian Cinderella

About three weeks ago, 27-year old Olajumoke Orisaguna was a complete unknown on the streets of Lagos, hawking bread.

A loaf of bread is about N100, and even with a full tray such as she carried in her first public embrace of fame, her whole ware for a day may not be more than N3,000, with daily profit between N300-N700.  She had trained as a hair stylist, got married but had to leave her husband and a daughter back home in Ire, Osun state, to “hustle” as it were in Lagos.

The life of a bread seller in Lagos is easily imaginable: exposure to the elements, to sundry abuse, including the possibility of being raped by unruly artisans and bachelors, who will offer to buy bread and something else along with it, if the hawker is willing. This was Olajumoke Orisaguna’s reality until she ran into TY Bello and Tinie Tempah and her life changed. Today, she has been enrolled as a model. Her story has appeared in all newspapers, on CNN, Huffington Post, and virtually everywhere online.

Two companies: StanbicIBTC and PayPorte have made her their brand ambassador. The former even awarded her two daughters scholarships up to university level. Her face has appeared on the cover of magazines. She is now a student at Poise Finishing School, an intern with two beauty salons, and a motivational speaker, even if she reportedly can’t speak English. When she went to the office of the National Identity Management Commission to get an identity card, NIMC also cashed in on her new found fame to use her to promote the agency: “Olajumoke knows she needs to NIMC. She walked into a NIMC centre yesterday unsolicited. Olajumoke is smart. Be like her.”  This must be the most saccharine endorsement of Olajumoke so far.

To crown it all, a construction company has given her a luxury apartment in Lagos. From hawking bread in Agege, she is now within weeks, the darling of corporate Nigeria, the poster girl for corporate social responsibility, a landlady, and a role model. She had probably never seen the inside of an aircraft, but a few days ago, she was on a flight to Abuja to give a speech!

Mrs Orisaguna is Nigeria’s Cinderella. Hers is a sudden, unplanned, unexpected, unprepared for grass to grace, rags to riches story, a kind of I–just-dey-waka-my-own-jeje-luck-come-jam-me-tale. It doesn’t happen everyday.  It is the kind of accident that many Nigerians seek: accidental fame and fortune. It is perhaps the magical, miraculous, I-don’t believe-it-but-it-is-true quality of this story that has captured the public imagination.

Olajumoke was hawking her bread innocently in Sabo, when she stumbled upon a photo session by that gifted mother of twins, artist and photographer, TY Bello, working on a series of shots for the international hip hop star, Tinie Tempah. We have been told that Olajumoke Orisaguna “photobombed” herself into the activity. I guess she just happened to walk by trying to sell bread, and TY Bello who is a spirit in action when she is at work, had a brain wave and took her picture.  Enormously creative, T Y Bello thinks on her feet. When she has that her big camera in her hands, she is an agile, inventive artist.

Her camera is a weapon for interpreting space and reality, and for discovering new meanings. It must have occurred to her that asking the international musician to pose with a bread seller would give the picture a much deeper meaning, inherent in the open contrasts and auto-suggestions.  It is that split second decision that has turned Jumoke Orisaguna into a superstar. The shot was brilliant, the result was impressive with people asking: “Who is that girl? She will make a good model.” TY Bello took on the challenge, and became Olajumoke Orisaguna’s promoter, mentor, adviser, godmother, and supporter, taking her to new heights within three weeks. Nobody is talking about Tempah, the main subject of the photo shoot; the focus is on the wanderer who walked onto the set, the bread seller who has taken the bread of the show, the waka-pass who became the star. I understand Tempah is quite happy; don’t be surprised then if he composes a special song soon, titled “The Bread Seller!” or “Photobombed” or simply “Olajumoke.”

The Olajumoke Orisaguna story is a perfect demonstration of the witchcraft quality of  photography and that single shot that has changed a life may well be one of TY Bello’s most remarkable efforts in her chosen genre.  But I find around Olajumoke’s sudden transformation from person to brand, too much capitalist hypocrisy and opportunism. The brand is selling like hot cake, but the person needs protection. I feel for her. I fear for her. There is a sense in which she is a potential victim.  The brand experts now taking her from place to place probably would not have even patronized her. They don’t eat the kind of bread that she sold.

Many of them don’t even know what part of Lagos is called Sabo. They don’t buy their bread from hawkers; they would rather go to supermarkets or confectionery stores. Before luck smiled on this young lady, many of those now posing for photos with her would never have noticed her presence. There are definitely many of her type, still hawking bread, or some other items, some even sitting in front of the bank, with a baby strapped to the back, but they may never be noticed or helped. The same companies that are using Olajumoke to talk about corporate social responsibility, are actually joking, they know that this is not CSR; it is brand exploitation!
M
And it may not last. There is nothing in Olajumoke’s background or exposure that has prepared her for the life of glitz being imposed on her.  The skills she has acquired as a bread seller and hair stylist may not carry her far in the cruel world of modeling.  When this blitz is over, she will need to compete for jobs and attention, if she must remain a model. She will have to learn sooner or later, to survive on her own.  She will have to maintain the luxury apartment that she has been given. She has been taught fancy dressing, including the magic of make up and those magical colours that change a dull face into a phallus-teasing one do not come cheap.

She is at best an art work that other people have created: she has been made up into a siren, her hitherto dull skin now glows, in one photo, her hair had a queenly allure, they have given her new clothes, jazzing her up, to look feminine and sensual, and they have taught her how to smile in a tempting manner. Wow. That smile! The sorry part of it all is that her narrative is quite innocent and hauntingly brief, as is the case with all overnight sensations. The capitalist hypocrites will soon find something else to excite them, just as the media will find a new story. It probably would have been much better to help Olajumoke Orisaguna set up a small-scale business, to take her off the street-life of hawking, rather than this world of sharks into which she has been thrown. Perhaps the best that has been done for her is sending her on internship at beauty salons. She could at least set up a beauty salon of her own and live happily thereafter.

In a normal society, no young woman should be on the streets hawking bread in order to survive. In a normal society, Olajumoke Orisaguna would have been given the opportunity to go to school, and have a proper career. She is being given, all within three weeks, the kind of empowerment that society has denied her and many like her, but how about all the other Olajumokes who may never “photobomb” their way to luck? Her new life is a reminder of what she could have been but which she could not become because of the kind of society in which she has found herself. She should never have had to hawk bread to support her husband and children.

Her husband! Yes, Mr. Sunday Orisaguna. I have seen him in the photographs, either carrying their baby, or just putting up appearance. He looks lost, confused, overwhelmed, harassed and uncertain.  He must be wondering what has happened or is happening to the woman he married. There is a clear difference between Olajumoke, the wife and bread seller, and Olajumoke, the model and celebrity. While Olajumoke is beginning to wear designer clothes, her humble husband is still managing his one-day-me-too-go-jam-luck attires. His wife has been sent to finishing school. By the time she finishes, I hope her new persona will not finish her marriage.

Olajumoke is now learning to speak English, but her husband is a humble, sliding door installer who probably speaks only Yoruba. In our kind of society, given the social level and cultural background of the parties involved, it won’t be long before the demons will begin to crawl out of the woods, from in-laws who may begin to psycho-analyse Olajumoke, to family members who will scrutinize her every gesture, and friends with whom she hawked bread and has now left behind.

Lack of clarity over role interpretation and the new persona could also confuse the young mother. She needs a different set of skills to manage new relationships, especially the new friends coming her way, including those lecherous uncles who may show up and seek to exploit her innocence. The people turning her into a sex symbol should also tarry a while, and remember that she is a married mother of two. She needs counseling. And her sliding door installer husband, who has featured in her fairytale so far as a hanger-on, no matter what happens, should not be made to slide away. Sunday Orisaguna should also be counseled, given new clothes, taught English and sent to finishing school. He should not be left behind.

    1. I thank God that someone else is seeing this same thing on the long run. If you give someone like olajumoke a house of 1million a month. After this whole hype, when she is left to probably manage a small saloon and hustle for modelling jobs how will she keep up with this lifestyle. I just hope that the marriage will not tear apart.
Nigerians just worship money and think that that is the only blessing. My own take is that starting her up on a very high social class might not be a good idea as Nigerians are known for abandoning projects. The challenge will come when all chips are down, they have thought her the easy way out, it is better to give someone empowerment by education or training instead of lavishing luxuries the person cannot afford. Will they even allow her to bend down and get training from the saloon?
I do not want to read news headlines of Olajumoke crying out that she's been abandoned.

    2. Look at the workers of those so called famzer companies, how well do they treat the people working for them. How many of their staff live in a good environment, how many of them give incentives for people that work day and night to keep their brand.
They can't even register them for health insurance and you expect them to squeeze out one dress for Jumokes husband.
They are just advertising for themselves.
Next thing now they will get her a rangerover and people will applaud, after now,how will she maintain that costly flat, expensive car driver etc
The way they all came, they will move on to the next site of attraction. Everything is business. They will still shout at That little boy that mixes Omo inside bottle to clean car windsreen on traffic. They will still bargain price with that crippled vulcaniser, that old widow that sells banana. Pretenders.

    1. Her story is just amazing. Only thing I'm worried about is that it might not last cos everything is happening all at once. Too suddenly. Ty bello needs to coach her and make sure people don't take advantage of her. She should enjoy it while it lasts. For some reason though, I feel like whole thing might get to her head and she might even end up leaving her husband

      Delete
    2. They are already taking advantage of her. She can't face these wolves.

    3. Nigerians like free things. Nothing comes free in this life. A time will come when jumoke will pay for every thing she's enjoying free now, house, car, she will hustle for modelling jobs, get some, lose some etc
They should empower her so she can fish for herself. No one bothered to ask if she even wanted this.
I noticed that she's now always wearing tube tops. Hmnnnnn. Well what she wants doesn't matter.

    5. She is indeed very blessed. If God himself had told her this day will come, she will not believe it. People saying its too fast n all; have you heard about current champion but no forever champion. This is her time to shine. Let Olajumoke establish herself n then she can assist her family, her husband included. The limelight is on Jumoke, her husband should support her now. There is no difference from when she was helping her family by hawking on the street n now a superstar! Did her husband help her hawk butter, moimoi or groundnut with the bread. Leave her husband out for now, let her be established n every other thing will follow.

    6. She broke an unusual record in the history of Nigeria. Even if she sinks to oblivion she'll never be forgotten.. as she's the Nigerian lady who sold bread and hit jackpot. Just like we have the faces of those peculiar women on some naira notes, perhaps in future she'll find a spot there too. The future generations may decide to honour her somehow. Her's is a story that can never be forgotten. It is big news indeed

There are other break hawkers and gala sellers, some are much younger than her and deserve a better life.

Help the government equip our hospitals.
Invest in the youth - they are the leaders of tomorrow ( even if you all lead till you're 200, they will still take over) lol

I can go on and on.

Make I go church jooor. We need to pray for our nation.
The bible says if we humble ourselves and call upon His name , he will hear us and heal our land.
Nigeria has been raped and battered and needs to heal. Nigeria is hurting, the innocent blood that has been shed is speaking against us.
It's not too late to cry to God for help.
We need wise rulers, we need cooperation from our citizens, we need to change the way we think. Above all we need to LOVE one another.

    1. This is to show you the mentality of an average Nigerian. That is why the rich keep getting richer and the poor getting poorer.
This Olajumoke now, 20 housing companies will want to give 20 different houses inside lagos. Only her. When they can reach out to other people.
What are we talking, none of them has even bothered to offer her husband anything and they see him everyday. They will rather give jumoke 2thousand ferragamo shoes but won't even think of buying a change of shoes "just one for the husband.
This is exactly why we are where we are in this country. Carry all our resources and heap it ontop of only PETROLEUM, other sectors can go to hell.
Now oil prices are down, politicians have stolen all the money from the oil boom and Naira is at the bottom of the ocean.
If you talk, you become hater! An enemy of progress, a pauper that can't afford it, a bile producer, etc.
The problem with this country will not change if we don't change the way we think. Did I say think???? Do we even think at all? Anyone can come up with one story and people will just start tapping into the blessing,Once you ask questions, bammmm you become a hater.
This is why I like stella.
You die the moment you stop asking questions even if people will kill you. Ask questions, air your opinion and don't be afraid.

I don't know why they are all perching on Jumoke when they can still discover another diamond in the rough like her.

Now everyone wants to be seen cos she has become a success story.

Jumoke must take advantage of every second and learn whatever ropes they are showing her..once the lights are deemed,i bet you these people will move on to the next "media sensation"

I also think most of these companies should endorse more of your every man or woman and use them as brand ambassadors...

  21. I read it to the end. Try.

The summary is accurate. The girl has suddenly been catapulted into fame, but where does that leave her husband? She is being shined, polished and groomed but the husband is clearly being left behind.

I have seen many marriages collapse when one spouse starts to move up the ladder and the other remains at the bottom.

All of a sudden Olajumoke's husband will no longer be in the same social class and she will be drawn to powerful, wealthy men. Like reuben Abati said, I fear for her marriage.

  22. thank u so much Reuben Abati for this very beautiful piece. I have had to share and express similar sentiments with a friend just some two days ago.

As exciting as Jumoke's story sounds, there is reali nothin to inspire us in it. Aside from incidentally appearing in a photoshoot as a bread seller, probably hustling like the rest of us, nothing realy is left.

Me thinks that all of these is happening too fast, kind of beyond what she can cope with and am very sure that most of these individuals milling arouind her right now is out to make money off her, to take advantage of her limited exposure and when the chips obviously comes down, she 'll be left to carry on with living and existence her own way..

Am happy for her though but i fear for her in d same measure if not more. Btw, where is that woman, the airport cleaner, who found and returned 12million Naira? Who has done anything for her? What have they done for her and in what reward for honesty has come her way?

Olajumoke, pls enjoy ur fame and this petty-burgeous lifestyle while it lasts and don't get shocked when u discover that this fast-beaten music has suddenly stopped. It is well with u, ur husband and kids..

  33. Truth.......At the end of the day they will just end up tearing her apart. Leaving her worse than they met her. I don't just know why I have never been excited about this whole bread seller saga. The whole thing just look staged.

  34. Pple go scream too long b'cos they can't appreciate good write ups.

Reuben Abati, if u continue to write like this, I might waive ur bad days in Aso Rock.

Too bad no one brought up these angles & raised the salient issues u just raised. I hope TY Bello sees this & take a cue from the points u just raised.

    Good one sire!

  35. So before Olajumoke, there were no persons Stanbic could identify and nurture? There are hundreds of zero to hero stories, but I guess none trending that they could quickly cash in and exploit.

What about the thousands of SMEs begging for loans that are potential catalysts for economic growth? They couldn't identify one, dust it and use it for their brand campaign, 'Moving Forward'?

I see everyone just trying to grab a slice of this cake, a cake that frankly does not concern everybody.

I feel so sorry for Sunday, her husband, but even more sorry for Olajumoke.

Olajumoke, most of the people surrounding you are out to eat off your head, that's the sad truth. If not via fame then via money.

You are 28' almost 30. married with children with a Nigerian husband and Nigerian in laws. Full recipe for disaster for any potential model.

Very soon awon in laws will tell your husband to marry another wife, claiming they've sold you into prostitution.

Aunty, establish what you want to do now. Do it quickly. I know you feel indebted to these fairy tale God mothers/fathers *loud cough* but trust me, the people passing you from hand to hand will maximize their profit on your head, hundred times over what you are currently earning.

Once the media blitz is over, all the people fluttering all over her like insects will evaporate sharp like shisha smoke.

Babe think for yourself, what next??

*Finishing school? Is that the first priority?

*Whoever is doing her PR needs to CHILL, we DO NOT need to know everytime Olajumoke pisses and shits.
Keep her safe and secure and out of unnecessary prying eyes while she grows .
She has her own frigging IG account, let people go and sit there all day if they want for their daily dose of Orisaguna Dairies.

*And yes, I still think Reuben Abati is a hypocrite.

God's blessings Olajumoke, to you and your fam.

Excuse typos please, just mighty irritated by this unnecessary drama. Faridah.

    3. @Farida I agree with your points but the people who are pushing her out and about are doing so because soon this will die off. So they need to make their money off her as quickly as possible. sharp sharp. Cinderella no be every day thing o. Very soon, she will meet ambode , sign another endorsement, become afenifere ambassador, huggies ambassador etc. Kikikikikikiki
And her modelling lifespan may not be long.
I even wonder how she's coping. She probably has to go round with an interpreter so that they won't exploit her the more sef.

    3. Ouch is case was different
      She wasn't married
      She didn't have 2 kids
      She wasn't 28

So at some point, jumoke buzz is going to calm down and she would be left alone to do things on her own

What better chance would she stand against young, single models without kids or husband's to tell them where to be at and where not to be..

And they are exploiting her too much

She already catwalked at Polo event. She was among the run way models
Aren't they suppose to be grooming her by now??

She was sent to be a speaker? Ah ah. It's too much. They should calm down but they are all rushing to make money off her before the media buzz will die down

  37. No she is not. Tons of Nigerian women have similar stories. I bet there are even more amazing stories than hers. No one person owns luck, it visits everybody at some point.

  42. make unu wait first,i no wan sound like hater or E.P enemy of progress, but
i just look this jumoke bread seller story well well and i deducted the
following points why i think its all a publicity stunt and a scam
story..even though it was brilliantly architectured.
1.The said picture that brought her to the lime light was taken at night or
at least by evening.going by the lightening in the photo. Abeg unu wey dey
stay lagos, how many bread hawkers they hawk reach 12pm for afternoon,if a
tall. I remember dropping money with my guard as early as 6a.m because if i
miss the normal morning sales na till the next day be dat. But, Aunty
Jumoke happened to sell till the sun went down..no be lie...lool

2.okay i understand say chance dey wey she fit wan be d odd wan out to sell
till evening...but haba, for u to be singled out for a life changing
experience as this means say luck and grace they with you abi?...but,aunty
why is your tray still very full..you no sell anything..even one
bread..those of us for lagos know as e dey be wen una just commot from
bakery..and na so your tray just still be,very full.you were not fortunate
enough to sell atleast one bread?.but was fortunate to be recognized by the
world over night? lol,so much for fortune and luck..lool.if u no see buyer
why u no go house go rest ..you still dey street till night.hmmm.

3.we all know as picture wey them take unexpectedly dey be? its either
blurry or at least the person go they one kind awkward and funny
position..but no oo..madam's legs were close to each other, signifying that
she wasnt moving at the time. And baba Tinnie just comfortably turn with
crossed legs and his hand in the pocket. lool.guys imagine that scenario
na.person dey disturb you and u wan come look back check who e be.na so u
go just swag, put hand for pocket first.then cross leg before u
turn?..lool..u be james bond?..guy!! you go scatter hand, spread your legs
and turn fully.you no get?..and if you were really distracted,Tinnie, and
turned from the photographer, the photographer go lower her camera and fit
even hala you sef say wetin dey sup na?..but no oo,our own Ty Bello just
still put hand for shutter button everly ready to click..lool. na pistol?

4.For the recent pics, una don see dis girl skin?..even runs girl skin no
smooth like dat.i no say e dey possible for hawker skin to fine oo.but,e
get level na.no matter what!!...from bakery heat to lagos sun..haba...you
go rough one kind na..but Aunty Jumy skin just dey shine like who use
    egyptian milk rub..

oga leave trash for lawma..that geh no photo bomb anything..it was all
staged..yes na up and coming model...and maybe Ty Bello promised the
fastest way to stardom and brilliantly thought up this publicity stunt..i
give her that..but stop pushing it to the limit..i have poeple who dey stay
street now, they find who dem wan photobomb.lool...madam you have messed
peoples thinking up bout life..nothing comes that easy..stop with the lies
e don do..now we know her..na you do am..no such thing as luck..my name is
Julius and i just want to make commonsense #commonsense

see other pictures wey them take unaware.. and the difference is clear. the people's
body movement is carefree.watch their legs and hands.and they all have
atleast made some sales as early as that morning.hmm ..there is God oo!!!!...

    1. My thoughts exactly.Thank you for this comment.

    2. To your first point, break hawkers hawk till midnight. I have had times when I'm coming back from mod week evening service at 10pm and I see a lot of bread sellers on the road. They are mostly on a crowded place. But if it's on my street, you see them only in the morning

      Delete
    3. Your second point, they go to the factory in the morning and evening to pick up bread. So if she went in the evening to pick up bread she would have that amount on her tray

      Delete
    4. Third point try taking a picture when in motion and you would see how the picture would turn out. You would lool like a model catwalking

I know this because I take too much picture and I'm one of those that give people my phone to take a picture of me when I am walking and pressing my other phone or when I'm doing something absent minded. Or I ask them to take random pictures of me as I'm walking. True some come out blurry but a lot come out amazing. And looks like I'm a run way model

So if ty was clicking away, she would have achieved that and picked one from the several blurry picture

      Just saying

Okay let me look at last point

    5. I have seen some light skin girls hawking

Sometimes some people hustles don't show on their skin

This people get to be under the sun from 8-11am and 5pm-11pm

They aren't really under the hot sun we experience from 12pm - 4pm

Meanwhole you know there is something called photo editing

  44. Igbos are the ones that behave like that, they are the ones that will start looking down on their husband and think they are better than him. That is why all of you have made that comment, it shows your mentality and attitude so speak for yourselves and not for others.

  46. Nice one Mr Abati, I hope TY Bello will see the points you mentioned, and her husband should be carried along or else he might be forced to marry another which may cause break-up (okwa ndi ofe o)..tufiakwa. She should plan and plan because the world of modeling isn't easy. Olajumoke ask God for wisdom.
