MTN Nigeria said it has recalled over 90 per cent of sacked employees of Visafone following its acquisition of the leading Coded Division Multiple
Access (CDMA) network.
According to reports all disengaged staff, excluding drivers and office assistants, have now been recalled.According to one of the recalled staff almost all the sacked staff have been reinstated and are now awaiting their new salary renumeration packages and work guidelines.
“When we were asked to leave, we were given only three months salaries in lieu of notice, which was not too good because some of us have put in five to 10 years of service. Visafone Communications came into Nigeria at a time when the defunct Multi-Links and Starcoms were dominating the CDMA sector. It broke their monopoly and instantly became the fourth largest network in the country.”
On the number of staff affected, our source said about 500 and not 2,000 as reported were involved because of the consecutive lay-off in 2013 and 2015 respectively.
He further stated that MTN did not want to take on liabilities initially until it discovered that its technical crew could not understand the CDMA network, which it acquired because of its spectrum.
“When MTN realised that it does not understand how the CDMA works, it had to appeal to us to come back to put them through the network.”
Prior to Wednesday’s sack, Visafone had laid off half of its workforce in 2013 and early 2015 in anticipation of the acquisition.Meanwhile, MTN Executive, Amina Oyagbola, explained that the acquisition seeks to leverage resources for service enhancement, which is also “reflective of our concerted efforts to deepen the growth and roll out of broadband services across the country in support of the National Broadband Plan for the benefit of Nigerians.
“We are committed to exploring avenues for meeting our customers’ increasing data needs in line with our vision ‘to lead the delivery of a bold new digital world
to our customers’. As we work to maximise our data capabilities towards achieving broadband of international quality, our objective is to ensure that
Nigerians experience a boost in the quality of broadband internet services translating to the much needed enhanced data speeds and value to enhance
personal and business productivity.”

This is the Biggest lie of the NEW YEAR. Recalling 20 staffs out of 2000 staff. that is not 90percent.
ReplyDeleteIt's not true...because I used to work for visafone.
ReplyDeleteDear Stella,
ReplyDeletePlease be informed that this story is the biggest lie told this year.
MTN didn't not recall all the staff sacked.
Facts:
1. VISAFONE laid off about 1000 staff on Tuesday 5th January, 2016
2. They didn't sack the people handling the retail outlets (shops)
3. They paid all the sacked people 3 months salary
4. The letter issued to them is written in a way that if you take VISAFONE to court, they would win
5. MTN didn't recall all the staff just 30 people where recalled.
6. MTN truly don't understand how the CDMA network works so they need these 30 people who will be paired with their own people (MTN staff) to understudy how it operates then the 40 people can then be laid off not so sure on their plan (present assumption)
7. Most of the staff affected have served VISAFONE for more than 7 years and I believe they deserve better.
Latest truth on this issue.
Don't know if it's true but mtn dey really try for our youths.

This report is not true stella. My sister works with visafone
ReplyDeleteDear Stella,
ReplyDeleteJust got this information from an MTN staff in top management.
1. The agreement signs between VISAFONE and MTN didn't state that MTN will acquire the staff.
2. VISAFONE got 1 year salary for each staff from MTN as pay off, instead VISAFONE chose to pay their staff 3 months. Isn't that greed.
3. It is confirmed gist that they will only use the recalled staff to understand how the CDMA network works after which they will be laid off.
4. The agreement to be signed with the recalled staff will be a contractual agreement for some month after which they will be told to leave without any benefits.
Dear Stella, this is a confirmed update.
The right government need to look into this and help this youths from becoming jobless after serving with their love, strength and loyalty for more than 7 years at least.
Thank you.
