Information Minister Lai Mohammed Details How N1.34trn Was Stolen By Govs And Others In 7years....

Nigerian state governors, ministers, business leaders, public officials and bankers allegedly stole $6.7 billion in public funds in seven years, Information minister Lai Mohammed said on Monday. Mohammed told reporters in the capital, Abuja, that some 1.34 trillion naira ($6.72 billion, 6.15 billion euros) was allegedly stolen between 2006 and 2013.

“The situation is dire and the time to act is now,” he added.
Giving a breakdown of the alleged theft, Mohammed claimed:

– 15 former state governors stole 146.84 billion naira
– 11 businessmen took 653 billion naira
– Eight people in the banking industry stole 524 billion naira
– 12 former state and federal public servants made off with more than 14 billion naira
– four former ministers took seven billion naira

The period covered the end of the second term in office for Nigeria’s first civilian president after military rule, Olusegun Obasanjo. He was replaced in 2007 by Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

Goodluck Jonathan took over in 2010 when Yar’Adua died in office.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari came to power in May last year, vowing to crack down on endemic corruption in Africa’s most populous nation.
He accused Jonathan’s administration of leaving the treasury “virtually empty” and vowed to recover what he said were “mind-boggling” sums stolen from the public purse. Former national security advisor Sambo Dasuki and a string of high-profile figures are currently facing corruption charges over allegedly bogus arms deals to the tune of $2billion.

Last Friday, the investigation was widened to military top brass who served under Jonathan.
Mohammed said tackling corruption was central to Buhari’s administration but added that it involved everyone.“This is Nigeria’s war,” he said.

Nigeria’s main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Buhari of conducting a witch-hunt against its members. Obasanjo, Yar’Adua and Jonathan were all PDP presidents. But the current All Progressives Congress (APC)
government would not spare anybody who has stolen public funds, regardless of their political affiliation, ethnicity or religion, added Mohammed.

They're beginning to sound like broken records everytime they come to tell us what we already suspects.

  7. I hope Lai Mohammed counted his principal (Tinubu) as part those perpetuating the rot. Tinubu probably stole/took atleast 500 bilion naira alone.

  8. The same politicians who contributed to the rot in one way or another have suddenly acquired halos and wings thus thinking that once they have decamped to a different party, they become saints and their former transgressions forgiven by the almighty without any form of restitution.

So we could hear that my darling tgw's Chanel and Hérmes bags where bought from monies directly or indirectly linked to fraud! Stella may have benefited from patronage of a crook, Linda eze's hubby is actually a confirmed crook, eka joy's boo is in jail for being a crook hence her perpetual bitterness, moneymaker ran away because he was being investigated for 'Crookery', etc!

Me sef, who knows if I went under "anonymous? Lol" to avoid detection as a known 'thiefer' or receiver of stolen funds!

  17. The government of the day keeps repeating itself ad nauseam.
We've heard this before and we're tired of hearing it.

This government thinks that their only job is to fight corruption apparently and in the process they've lost sight of every other area of governance.

Security is non existent, the economy is grinding slowly to a halt, there are no jobs for the many youth graduating from the poorly run educational structures, the currency is a shadow of its former self, the basic infrastructure is very poorly developed...
Yet, all we hear is about the billions that were stolen by the previous administration.

    Sigh.

Dear government of the day, wake up and smell the brewing dissatisfaction. The fight against corruption is NOT YOUR ONLY JOB.
Let us hear what you're doing to improve the plight of Nigerians.
Economic indices and figures mean nothing to people who struggle to make it, day to day. Tangible results are required.
Do the job for which you were voted into power.
