Bill Seeking Death Penalty For Those Dealing In Fake Drugs Scales Through Second Reading

A Bill seeking to amend the Counterfeit, Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Processed Foods law in Nigeria, scaled the second reading in the Senate on Thursday.

The amendment Bill, among others prescribes punitive punishment, including life imprisonment for anyone culpable of importing, producing and distributing counterfeit and fake drugs, as well as unwholesome processed foods in the country.

The Bill sponsored by Senator Biodun Olujimi is titled “A Bill for an Act to amend the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs and Unwholesome Process Foods (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act Cap C34 Laws of the Federation and for other matters connected therewith”.

Leading debate on the Bill, Olujimi, who raised the alarm on the high level of fake and counterfeit drugs circulation within Nigeria, called for immediate action on the part of the government to stem the tide.
The Bill was unanimously endorsed, while Senators canvassed for even death penalties and confiscation of properties of all offenders as good measures for scaling down the growing influence of fake drugs business in Nigeria.

Olujimi Olujimi however described fake and counterfeit drugs as the highest weapon of terrorism against public health in Nigeria given its tendency to ‘kill the masses’.
She said fake drugs have consistently been embarrassing healthcare providers, while eroding the confidence of the public on the health delivery system with the rate of treatment failures often experienced in most health care centres in the country.

She said the business of fake and counterfeit drugs has been growing in the country because of the law put in place to check the spread is weak.

Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki thanked Senator Olujimi for presenting the Bill, just as he referred it to the Committee on Health for next action.

I know selling fake drugs has killed and maimed a lot of people, however the death penalty is rather harsh if you ask me,they can be sentenced to a life of hard labour.

    4. The death penalty is harsh, but these people are callous and heartless! They are actually mass murderers even though they don't run around with dangerous weapons attacking people, but the devastation they cause is just as bad.
Life sentences with hard labour might be a better option, along with confiscation of assets. If they could also extend this punishment to corrupt politicians and bureaucrats that would be just perfect!

  2. Wow. This is interesting. I donot agree with you Stella. The only grammar Nigerians understand is HARSH! Until some laws are put in place to deal with some offences, things won't turn around. I await one for child rapists.

    1. I agree with them. Selling fake drugs has killed several people. They keep taking these drugs without getting better. And they eventually die. So please, death sentence all the way.
That said, kindly get drugs from Medplus, health plus, careforte and all recognized pharmacies in Nigeria. They might be abit more expensive but you can trust that they are original

  4. Well, maybe the fear of death penalty will stop them, hence the bill.

    What do I know?

As long as importation of fake drugs and foods are stopped, any way they go about it is okay.

  14. How about death penalty for those who steal government funds. Governors who award fake road contracts, do half hazard jobs and pocket d billions, then people die in accidents on those same roads. How about embezzling of funds meant for general govt hospitals, that the hospital don't even have the drugs or equipment to carry out life saving treatments, making pregnant or sick people die from little illnesses 20k can solve. Why not death penalty for politicians ehn ???
