Secondary School Students In Osun Go Berserk, Chase Teachers With Guns

The unimaginable happened last Wednesday when some students suspected to be members of a cult invaded the premises of the Anglican High School and Adenle Middle School in Osogbo, Osun State capital, chasing their teachers with guns.

The invasion according forced other students and members of staff to flee from the school premises was said to have been embarked upon by the suspected student cultists to stop the staff from conducting an examination that would enable them to enjoy the state government-sponsored free WAEC registration.

The attack forced the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state to direct all its members to steer clear from the attacked institutions. The state Ministry of Education also closed down the schools to prevent loss of lives.

Clearly, the action of the suspected student cultists is unbecoming and regrettable. However, the action of the suspected student cultists is one among several others which portray the nation’s youths as hooligans. Nowadays, reports of students being unruly, harassing, attacking and injuring their teachers during examinations or when they (teachers) attempt to discipline them (students) are common.

In some cases, such students’ behaviours are supported by their parents and guardians. Some of the parents and guardians go to the extent of ensuring that teachers who insist that students ‘stay straight’ are dealt with by the school authorities.

These among others encourage errant behaviours among students across the country which if unchecked may spell doom for all and sundry.

This is reason all hands should be on deck to arrest the moral decadence among youths. Doing this will mean that parents and guardians must monitor their wards and the companies they keep. Parents and guardians should in addition live exemplary lives.
