The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, yesterday, responded to criticisms trailing the Bill on Frivolous Petition that has passed the Second Reading at the Senate, saying any part of the bill that does not conform to human rights will be removed.
Speaking on the sidelines of Lagos Business School Dinner at which he was a guest, Saraki said: “We have only debated the principle of the bill, we have not gone into the details of the bill. So, if there is any part of the bill that does not conform to human rights, be rest assured that the Senate will do the proper thing.
So there was no bill that was brought forward called social media bill?
.
“I think there is need for clarity on that and to let you know that those that led the protest, we have received their letters, we have told them to be rest assured that by the time it goes to committee work, and goes to public hearing, some of these things will come up.
“But you must understand that when those bills come to the floor of the Senate, they come as argument on the principle of the bill, and the principle of that bill was Frivolous Petition, nothing to do with social media but later on we did find out that there was a section in it about social media.
“That will go away when it comes to third reading, where you consider the Bill section by section.”

I hear you. I wonder what Nigerians are even afraid of. If you speak the truth and also possess evidence to sustain the making of certain statements, you actually have nothing to fear. The problem is that most Nigerians rather believe and publish half-truths as truth without even trying to verify the source of such information.
ReplyDeleteAnother example can be found in yesterday's post where sime people referred to the BV (Chris) as a Yahoo boy without even knowing him. Its people like this that I believe the bill is targeting.
Well said @ stranger.
DeleteWell said.
DeleteAnd sum1 did mention Linda ikeji's name also.
Lol
Some Nigerians hate success, they envy what they don't have..they try to mock what they don't understand. They spread rumours, tell outright lies just to feel better. But they still can't sleep at night. LOL
DeleteThis is the cause of a lot of downfalls.
@Stranger, exactly dear. I see nothing wrong with that aspect of the bill. If you are convinced that the information you published is a fact and u can prove it, why worry? The days of misinformation, defamation of character, and frivolous social media slander should be discontinued. Everyone should be social media responsible. And this will put in check those who use every medium as their tunnel of mischief.
DeleteI dnt get him plz, he did not know there was a section that talked about social media because he did not readt it kwo. Please there are urgent bills to be passed, frivolous petition and social media is d least of our problems.
