Choi,My Former Editor has personally experienced what being robbed is all about..he faced the Nozzle of men who take what does not belong to them and they beat him blue black.....OMG!
Sunday, December 6, 2015 will always remain an unpleasant and unforgettable day for Michael Effiong, Editor of Ovation Magazine.
Around 9.30pm, and while returning from an event, a gang of robbers descended on him around Maryland, Lagos, beating him blue and black and also snatching his SUV, a gray Volkswagen Tiguan, alongside other personal effects.
The robbers did not stop there...they collected his ATM card, got his password and with him still in his SUV, drove to a bank in Surulere where they emptied his account.
From there, they embarked on a robbery expedition, snatching different cars, increasing their convoy along the way and injuring many with their guns, till they eventually pushed him out of the SUV along Oshodi/Apapa Expressway. From where he later managed to find his way home.
Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode’s newly equipped Rapid Response Squad was notified thereafter and so far they’ve been able to recover the SUV from where it was parked in Badagry. Efforts are also on going to arrest the robbers said to be over four.
Unfortunately, as at the time of locating Effiong’s SUV, his international passport, numerous vital documents, phones, laptops, IPad, etc had all disappeared. And that still gives him so much concern because of their sensitive nature. Meanwhile, in a chat with YES INTERNATIONAL! Magazine after the robbery, the beautiful writer and one time Editor of Encomium Weekly only managed to quip: ‘ I just thank God that they spared my life…but it was a very, very nasty experience’.
*Awwwww Michael Sir,sorry oh...I can imagine how scared you must have been.
After reading all these stories, some people will still bend mouth and be asking me when i am coming for Xmas to Nigeria...Una Try!
70percent of Nigerians have become Thieves!...I am sorry but that is the figure i have in my head!
This Has Become a norm in Lagos.
ReplyDeleteLittle or nothing is done to improve security within the state.
We live n walkabout by God's mercy.
Oh!! That was how my Gf and her bf were robbed last week at Ajah!
DeleteStella, could you believe they came in with big Siena car, drove into the Compd, tied the gate man down, went into the flats and collected all their phones first . My friends were robbed of all their gadgets and electronics, ATM( you must tell them the pin if they eventually go and find out u have fake pin, you will be gunned down), all their cash were stolen...
My resolution: no more ATM cards except for my service account..which must have at most 20k,
It's really terrible.. thank God for life which is most impt
Shebi a lot of people were deported lately with no job or means of survival. Ok o!
DeleteBut i thought the limit to withdrawing from an account per day is #100k abi #150k?
DeleteOr is it possible to transfer more than that speculated amount via any other means??
Or was that the exact amount he had in his bank account??

ReplyDeleteWhenever ARMED robbers r caught, they should be sentenced to death by electrocution.
ReplyDeleteNEPA will take light at that point. Just hang or shoot them!
DeleteHahahahahah, @ Teddy,you are cray!!
DeleteLmao. Teddy, you r not serious
DeleteU say shoot? No bullet oooo.... best is hanging haha!!
DeleteWhile i sympathize with Mr Effiong, permit me to say that It is highly impossible to empty his bank account, unless he had only 150k in his account.
ReplyDeleteHowever, if the money was transferred via quick teller, then they can track the beneficiary and get him/her arrested.
How did u read my mind, immediately I saw emptied the account I said ATM limit its now 60k per Day not 150 again, so is it the empty he meant and I have said it here if ur held on gun point to give ur pin, give the opposite of it, if ur pin is 1234, give them 4321 the ATM would immediately trap the card, ppl should also be vigilant this period is dangerous. That's how they rob my brother on Sunday too at gun point, guys re not smiling the economy is so bad.
DeleteTanchu!!
DeleteMy thoughts exactly.
Madam over sabi ... its still N150k.. N60k applies when you are outside the shores of Nigeria
DeleteWarning!!! don't carry your ATM around
ReplyDeleteIf you must carry, reduce the amount to 20k or less. Unless the person operates one account there.
DeleteDid he have only 100k in his account? Cos atm withdrawal has a daily limit of 100k
ReplyDeletesome banks don even limit am to 60k.
DeleteEeeeeehya sorry o Micheal
ReplyDeleteThank God for life...
Sdk take your time, Nigerians are not thieves o
Christmas is here & boys are not smiling!!!! Be careful my people. The less valuables u carry in ur car, the better for u. Car robbery in lagos now is something else.

But how did they withdraw all the money in his account with ATM when the limit per day is 60k abi still the former 150k?
ReplyDeleteIt could be that he had just that in his account. You can still call that emptying.
DeleteIt is also possible that they got hold of his other cards.
Remember it's your fatherland no matter what happens

Delete@Local girl,I wonder o.
DeleteI don't know if they think an editor is a politician.
DeleteEven if he has so much,it is possible he has investments..people might not be as liquid as you think these days. They just keep money they get by with and invest the rest!
Think outside the freaking box and don't assume every one of of liar!!
Nawaaaa o, Oga sorry o
ReplyDeleteEnter your comment...hmmmmm
ReplyDeleteNa wa oh! But ATM has a daily limit. Is it possible to empty ones account when there's a limit?
ReplyDeletePlus, this is why I surname is good. Please let's try and be insuring our cars. God forbid but you never know
Maybe the limit was all he had in the account with atm card
DeleteAs a business man I expect he will have saving and corporate account
Corporate accounts don't come with atm card
Corporate accounts come with atms hunnay.

thank God he is alive.
ReplyDeleteBoys are not smiling ooo.
Thank God his life was spared. What a terrible experience!
ReplyDeleteAs for those criminals, one day their cup will be filled.
What happened to him is sad. But that doesn't warrant you saying 70percent of Nigerians are thieves. It is a wrong assertion. It means 7 out of every 10 Nigerians are thieves from your statement. Haba Stella,no naaah. It hasn't gotten to that yet. And I pray it doesn't. It is so untrue abeg.
ReplyDeleteAwesome,it has gotten to that oooh.Lol
Delete90percent of bvs have mocked people that found missing money for returning them.
Some have scurried off to the bank to steal money that was mistakenly creditted to them...are they not thieves?
That 70% includes Stellas family
DeleteDon't come to Nigeria na. God will continue to spare our lives.
ReplyDeleteSorry dear! It's well
ReplyDeleteThank God the most important thing was spared...his LIFE
ReplyDeleteSeen
ReplyDeleteSince he's your former boss, you might not post this but I will go ahead all the same.
ReplyDeleteTwo questions:
1. What was he doing with his International passport going about his daily activity? You dey travel?
2. If they used ATM to empty his account, it shows he didn't have money in the account. You can only withdraw 60k abi na 150k daily.
Anyway, so sorry Sir about your encounter.
Gbam onpoint
DeleteHe travels all over the place.
DeleteHe just got back from Ghana.
You can withdraw 100k
DeleteAnd yes that could have been his saving account
What if he had a current account where you don't get to have atm card?? Only make withdrawals tooth check books??
70%?? Choi!! Stella fear God oo!!
ReplyDeleteThank God for your life Sir, that's the most important, every other thing will fall into place, eventually!!

ReplyDeleteNo it's not. I'm presently carrying my ipad and two smart phones in my handbag so,no biggie about that.
DeleteI feel sorry for him. But why does he have his international passport in his car. Unless he is on his way to airport, why would he have his passport with him? He as a journalist should know better. Having said that, I pray the Police will recover whatever they took from him
ReplyDeleteI go every where with my international passports
DeleteThat's my means of identification when I want to. Make withdrawals in the banks or have something to do and I need to present my means of identification. It's not a big deal
I feel sorry for him. But why does he have his international passport in his car. Unless he is on his way to airport, why would he have his passport with him? He as a journalist should know better. Having said that, I pray the Police will recover whatever they took from him
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for him. But why does he have his international passport in his car. Unless he is on his way to airport, why would he have his passport with him? He as a journalist should know better. Having said that, I pray the Police will recover whatever they took from him

NA WA OO
ReplyDeleteStella remain for that for Germany dey famz your self, we don't want to see your sorry ass here in naija. ReplyDeleteUntil Lagos state becomes safe, ppl shld just stay where they are. Very soon Ambode go open mouth say his inviting those from diaspora. Invite them into no water,no light and constant fear of robbery.
It's really sad what this country has turned into. When 3percent of d population is holding on to funds meant for remaining 97percent.
Do we even have a Governor in Lagos?
