Nigeria Bans Credit Card Use Abroad To Stem Flow Of Foreign Exchange Out Of Country

Nigeria's central bank has ordered commercial banks to stop customers from using their debit and credit cards abroad, a source has told the BBC.
One bank has emailed customers to this effect, stressing it is a "temporary measure".
Access to foreign online retailers will also be affected when the ban takes effect on 1 January 2016.

It is part of the government's effort to try to stem the flow of foreign exchange out of the country.
The unofficial value of the Nigerian currency, the naira, has plunged because of the fall in the oil price - its main export.

Africa's largest economy has spent billions of dollars propping up the currency since it fixed the exchange rate in February and tightened trading rules to curb speculation.
It is not clear how many people will be affected by the latest measure but the BBC's Bashir Sa'ad Abdullahi in the capital, Abuja, says wealthy Nigerians travel abroad regularly and use their local cards for shopping and other transactions.

Some top-end shops in London have signs in Hausa to cater for the large number of Nigerian customers.
One of the banks, Standard Chartered, has emailed its customers notifying them of the ban.In June, the central bank banned businesses from accessing hard currency to import about 40 items.
The list included Indian incense, plastic and rubber products, soap and even private jets.

The amount that Nigerians could spend on credit cards abroad has already been reduced by the banks.

JESUS CHRIST.....why is this nau??????..Hisssss!!!!

Over time it will stabilize the naira if all the right measures is put in place i.e encourage direct foreign investment in Nigeria, entrepreneurs should invest in Nigeria rather than take money abroad, increase export etc. All this said I pity those who actually just travel on holiday. It will def affect their purchasing power.

      Delete
    4. @briggs, trust me this is the right thing. Anti corruption is just a by product. This is a very common and basic economic strategy. Why can't we carry naira abroad and change when we get there? Why does Nigeria sell oil and collect dollars? We have a weak currency and this is a way towards strengthening it. Fact is there is too much foreign currency in circulation in Nigeria and that is detrimental to the naira. You can't spend Euros in England which is in the EU but it is legal tender in naija.
Very few people have the basic understanding of economics but many have imternet access so they come on blogs to chat crap. Don't be quick to hate on your selves. Pick up a book and learn about how things work.

    1. Am not an economists but with my little knowledge of the course it's called "devaluation of the naira". What CBN is trying to do is that by devaluing the naira imports will gradually reduce and Nigeria's will start seeking local options. By doing this, more job opportunities will be created, the current over dependence on oil will reduce as other local sectors of the economy will be invested in, foreign investors will begin to come into Nigeria to invest hence it will reduce us travelling to get those stuffs and we will have more made in Nigeria products as against all the made in China that we are currently experiencing. By growing other sectors, our exports to other countries as well will increase because of the need for it elsewhere. We will have favourable foreign policies put in place to aid investment in Nigeria. More investments in Nigeria will not only create more jobs but also develop the economy as we will have better infrastures like electricity and good roads. However, all this will not be possible if the right measures is not put in place by the govt. In the short run a lot of businesses will crumble but in the long run it will be the best decision the CBN as tried to put in place. We are currently experiencing stagflation meaning high rate of inflation and high rate of unemployment. This are measures to control all this. I hope I answered your question.

I also hope you know their are items that must be bought abroad?? How do people source for that now

      What about SME??

Those whose legit business is to buy thing online and resell in Nigeria what we they do!?

Please there is only few advantages to this and so many disadvantages to this

This won't help solve the naira in any bit

      Because it will regulate cbn
But black market will be very very high

And we all know banks don't give dollars
      Only black market

So what again is the gain

Even my friend who almost had a first class in Unilag came and did her masters here and told me she doesn't even want to think of her BSc as she can see that it was all a joke. Please leave that matter. Let them pay if they can afford it. The difference is very clear.

  33. To my little knowledge this has both positive and negative results, positively this will strengthen the naira because most people will be force to spend locally and buy more things in Nigeria than they do outside of the country and believe me this will affect the wealthy one most coz a normal average Nigeria can't even afford travel ticket talk less of having a bank balance of buying designers with the use of debits and credit cards and you guys will patronise companies like Konga and co more which will strengthen the local retailers also numbers of people jetting out of Nigeria to do unnecessary weddings outside the shore of the country will reduce as they won't have much money to use with their cards abroad. It's high time we should be proud of made in Nigeria things .i.e. Wear aba made clothes and stop dashing the white people, an American will not wear our Ankara fabrics so we all need to value our own. Negatively it will be hard on us all at first. People studying outside the country with help from home will feel it most and those who trade using their bank cards to pay for purchases of software and so on will be affected.
