Nigeria Music Video Awards, NMVA, will come alive again on December 17, 2015
at the Eko Hotel and Suites for the ninth year in a row.
In what promises to be a night of fun, music and dance, Ghanaian actress, Jackie Appiah, and Nigerian humour merchant, Okey Bakassi, have been unveiled as hosts.
According to the initiator of the award, Cally Ikpe, this year’s theme is “A world without violence’ and speaks with Vanguard on this year's theme and what makes a good music video:
How did you come about the non-violence philosophy for your event?
-We started doing our event like the normal showbiz, jamboree thing, then we realised that it could actually be a vehicle to sell something positive. We have a non-violence culture in Nigeria that’s not comfortable with hate, denigration of women, brute force, negativity, lewdness and so on. By that we mean that as an artiste, you mustn’t be bizarre or obscene in order to get attention. That’s not a legacy to leave behind, it’s a lazy way out. I insist that people who choose to remain on that part are those who are bereft of ideas and creativity and are trying to make up at all cost. It must not be so. The 2Face, Psquares and legendary acts of today are not known for that. When people do things, they should look beyond the present and consider their tomorrow, how they’ll be remembered. A lot of young people are getting to believe that it’s only when you take to arms and get physical that you attract attention. We can use our little platforms to promote a culture of non-violence and that’s what I’m using the Nigerian Music Video Awards to do.
What makes a good music video?
-Fundamentally, a music video is meant to interpret and draw attention to a song. When the video doesn’t complement and support the song, then it’s not a good video. For a video to properly interpret a song, attention must be paid to costuming, cinematography, choreography etc where applicable. If it’s an indigenous song, the video should appeal to the locals.
Flaunting women, money and luxury in music videos seem to be the norm, what’s your take on that?
-As a matter of fact, if there are no women in your videos, I frown at it. I like to see women in videos because it makes the video more interesting. It makes the world complete. Women are like flowers, colourful creatures. But what we frown at is using such videos to disrespect and denigrate the women. You can show off a woman’s sexiness without disrespecting her. Why do men not go naked in videos? That’s where we have challenges, otherwise a video without a woman in it is a minus for me.

This should answer the video vixen brouhaha on this blog a few days ago. A video without women is a minus for the organizers of these awards. The demand for such videos is also very high I guess..
Shout out to all the Video Vixens in the house....''Keep your clothes on!''lol
can someone be nice enough to post the video vixen brouhaha link in the comment section?Thank you.

ReplyDeleteBuy I see so much disrespect towards women going on in music videos...slapping ass, grabbing ass, laughing with your friends while she twerks away almost naked, rough handling...
Gross disrespect, they are actually treated like objects. If only they will tone it down!!
DeleteCally Ekpe has come a very long way.
We dey! Buhahaha
ReplyDeleteI remember growing up and telling my mama I wanted to be a dancer like Kaffy. She said you didn't tell me you want to be a prostitute.
I was seriously confused, I am a very good dancer but she discouraged me with that statement and even went on to tell me even models are just the same.
Do I regret not being a dancer? Well no but I think it's just a misconception that would take a long time to change seeing as many of these girls in the entertainment industry end up breaking the norms.
Doppelganger, a video vixen is still better than turning out to become an olosho

What about Nicki Minaj videos?
These are videos Nigerians watch and like and never complain about, why is it different here?
As long as they cover the T and P, I have no problem with it.

Must a video vixen be on bra and pant to make the video colourful? That's the question
ReplyDeleteI tire o. There r better ways of being sexy
DeleteThe coin *Video Vixen* should be retired. It's so outdated. In a way, it sounds vulgar. The videographers should also desist from flashing in and out of the bottoms and breasts of the dancing females, less is more. Also their bottoms don't need to be too close to the Camera, all up in our faces, we don't need to see VPL visible panty lines all the time we watch these videos. Also, there doesn't need to be five million girls in every video vying to have their faces in the Camera. Also, please ladies showcase some African hairdos too. Enough of too much yaks hair in these videos. Leave the nudity to the men. Let them showcase their cucumbers sometimes. I'm out. - Mic on the floor-

Ain't nobody telling me otherwise.

Thank God someone is saying something, the girls leave little or nothing to the imagination with what they wear though the chunk of the blame goes to the video directors.

D Arc Ed,i love love love your comment on the video vixen post.
ReplyDeleteYou practically said it all, in a few words.
Video vixen a career? A profession?
As in,do they have an association, and get retirement benefits?
Na wah!
A woman can still look extremely sexy and appealing in videos, covered up.
I mean,if you're not modelling underwears on the runway, while should you dance around naked, if you really think straight.
All those people arguing about unemployment and lack of money being the reason, how many of y'all will carry guns or behead someone if the opportunity presents itself, because you didn't see a job?
So, now, people have different excuses for lack of morals.
Not making sense abeg. Now,one can't leave a kid to see programmes on TV without supervision.
