Piers Morgan claims Diego Costa and Eden Hazard were the two Chelsea players leading a ‘plot to axe Jose Mourinho’.

Mourinho was sacked by Chelsea on Thursday afternoon after a disastrous start to the season left the defending Premier League champions one point above the relegation zone.

The 52-year-old had seen his relationship with many of his players break down and he accused them of betrayal following last week Monday’s defeat to Leicester.

Costa and Hazard have been well short of the form they displayed last season and Piers Morgan claimed they had been behind a revolt.

He tweeted: “I hear Costa and Hazard were 2 main Chelsea culprits in plot to axe Mourinho, thus covering up with their own woeful form. I’d sell them.

“I hope Chelsea fans chant Mourinho’s name loudly and boo Costa & Hazard equally loudly.”

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich told Chelsea’s players on Friday that he did not want to sack Mourinho, who won the title just seven months ago, but he had had no other choice given their form.

However, Morgan described it as the worst decision in sporting history.

Morgan wrote in the Daily Mail: “As an ardent Arsenal fan I should have been thrilled at the failure of a man who dubbed our own manager Arsene Wenger a ‘specialist in failure’. But I wasn’t.

“Instead, I was flabbergasted.

“This is the single worst decision in the history of the sport.

“Jose Mourinho isn’t just a winner. He’s THE winner of the modern game.

“In just 12 years as a manager he’s won an astonishing 21 trophies.”
