Chronicle Of Blog Visitor Narrative.

This is plain wicked and horrible!

STAND ALONE NARRATIVE
CHRONICLES OF A TROUBLED MIND.

Good day Mrs Kork,
I trust things are well with you and yours? Many thanks for creating this platform. God bless you.
I am a blog visitor and and an issue has been a burden to me and I need your advice if you'd be kind enough to oblige me.

I'll try to be concise. While I am grateful to God for his faithfulness,  for 2years, I have been working in a highly toxic environment, a place where they just want to hold you down and its affecting me emotionally, physically, psychologically and spiritually. I summorn courage to engage in activities that render lil  or temporary succour to me.

I know what they say about Nigerian bosses but can't there be an exception? My bosses are very unprofessional. I love to work, I wouldn't consider myself as a lazy person, I believe I'm still growing and have a lot to learn but my bosses will have non of that. They will insult you and your family at the slightest error you make, call you all sorts of demeaning names and will stop at nothing other than driving you into a state of depression.

Everyday, the employees are reminded about how useless and dispensable we are and how much of a favour our employers are doing us by paying us salaries and they do this in front of visitors, nobody respects us when they come to the office. Mind you, I work 8-7 everyday except weekends sometimes Saturdays. You have to be perfect while they are the masters of errors.

My immediate boss is a Buck passer.

My bosses are supposedly pastors but its a shame the kind of attitude they portray, they see themselves as mini gods and they acknowledge it. On several occasions, I have being aware of my bosses getting ladies laid in the office and these are married men. Sometimes, I think it might be my turn someday.
Our efforts are never bn appreciated. They make us feel incompetent and no matter how much you stick your neck out to get things done, you get insulted, ridiculed and they won't stop until you start crying.

I have tried praying for them but they seem to get worse by the day. Some mistakes are unavoidable but what would it cost them to just correct you, they would make sure you and your family are insulted before sending you off without making the correction and make you stay in the office till 9-10pm before they leave and would return the next day to continue from where they stopped.
We are not entitled to leave in my office. If you dare talk about it, get ready to be fired and they would tell you there's no job in Nigeria.

My life is suffering cos I can't sleep well at night as the event of the day keeps resonating in my mind and the night passes away, I wake to the same episode the next day. My social life is dead, I can hardly pray and I only get to grow resentment towards them which is bad for me. I never look forward going to work.

There's a lot to say Stella. My passion is event planning and management. I am very good at it, I do small jobs at times while I have tried to get some people to invest in me so I can be on my own, these men want something in return all the time and I can't trade  my body for any reason. I stay in Abuja and everybody seems to think I  must go the extra mile with my body even my bosses say i pretend a lot because i dont share their views on certain moral principles.

I'm still in the job cos I have to carter for my family. I am a graduate, the first child and daughter. I am seeking for other jobs and even when I get Interview invitations, I can't secure permission for a break outside the office without insults and reminders that if I stay more than 30mins outside, I'll be fired.
I can't even go to the bank on my own except I'm on an errand, just last month, I was unlawfully debited over the weekend and I needed to report at the bank the following Monday as the money hadn't been reverted yet, my boss refused me to go even when I asked for the permission in the afternoon stating that I can't be taking permission to go to the bank on a Monday.

Just last week, I was suspended and still at home for insulting a colleague of mine that was harassing me sexually in the office, according to my HR, I shouldn't have done anything because he is my senior in the office. Can you just imagine this?

I'm feed up Stella, its not all about  the money all the time but when one is being robbed of one's peace of mine and sanity by people who only derive pleasure in  stepping on other people's head, the money doesn't count at the end of the day. I work in a private company.
My friends keep saying if I leave where would I go and that the devil you know is better then the Angel you don't know. Please are there Nigerian civilized bosses who care about the welfare of their staff and fight against workplace violence as that's what I'm am facing.

I am at my wits end as to what to do. I am not a failure and will never be.
Please forgive my chronicle. I need to remain sane hence I'm voicing out via this platform.
Please enjoy your day.

THIS IS HORRIBLE!!...Is there no Union regulating private firm owners treatment of staff?

    6. @ poster;what you believe in is what works for you..

Who told you there are no jobs in Nigeria??

If you think u cant get A white collar job easily;then create A job out of yourself.. look at the environment you are currently and fix the missing puzzles...

There are jobs out there if only you have got the key skills and smart as well..thing is no company wants An employee who would end up being A liabilty to them..hence why some have all the whole "P.HD" certificate yet they cant find something doing(cos they lack basic skills)..

So if u can work on yourself first(you have A passion for something which you can actually pursue);and with you making some good contact out there, you would get A job/work to do at a better place..

All bosses are not that bad bydway!! Just pray you get the good ones to work with or perhaps become your own boss no matter how little you can start up with..

Finally stop thinking that when you leave this current job;its the end of the world for you..worst thing that could ever happen to anyone is working in A toxic environment;so better leave that environment and look for somewhere better!!

If mistakenly you die today cos of this job;that company wont close up for even A day to act as condolence..

      All the best to you..

So sorry about what you are going through...my company should be a sister company to yours cos they do virtually all what you wrote up there. I spoke with a friend this morning that I'll be stopping work come January to enable me look for a better job, she kept telling me not to quit till I get a better job...I'm totally confused.
Private companies are not it at all, most times i get so angry that I feel sad when I have to go to work.
I'll advice you to leave if you have saved enough money. Leave so that you can go out there to showcase your potentials and also get something worth your time and energy.
Believe me when I say i am in your shoes right now, but the difference is that we don't get insulted here like your place, but they make it look like they are doing us a favour by keeping us and always remind us there are no jobs in nigeria.
      My dear, it's well...pray for God's direction.

Dear poster, please pick up a pen, and peacefully resign. Do the needful by giving them the 1 month notice before leaving. What fuckery is this? How can you because of salary, subject yourself to a very wicked and unlawful work environment? To even make matters worse, the office is not one that can give you room to improve by attending interview elsewhere. Can't u see? That the office is holding and tying you down by making sure you don't soar higher? This is my honest advice and what I will do if I were u. Resign, and violently look for job. See there are plenty receptionist jobs out there with pay of 50k.Take them for a start while looking for something better. The worst thing that can happen to anyone is what's happening to u. Please resign, and believe God for a job, and job hunt. God be with u. Don't mind d people advising u to remain tied there and not look for job.

  40. Eyaa. Let me tell you one secret of growth in Abuja. Join a living church. Not a big church. You can grow spiritually and financially.

Here is the deal, you are into even planning and management. When you join the small church and you become a real member by licking pastors ass and mamas ass from there you tell them what you do.they will start advertising u to members that want to do weddings and other events. You start with the church own and before u know it, you become the person in charge of most events/weddings of the church members.
From church members you get introduced to other people that is if you are good. But you have to be a known church members/worker.
Before all these can take serious effect, you have to be doing some free church decoration and a lot of free will donation.
    You give to receive.
Quite any job that is not paying well/giving you peace and channel the same energy towards your own personal goal and you will see yourself doing exploits.

If you continue been afraid of 'where wil I work if I leave ds one' you'l never I repeat 'NEVER' leave. Been a first or d only breadwinner in ur family n den stopped providing for dem won't kill them NO am talking from experience here. Quit that job, find n give yourself the time you need. But then, I am not wearing your shoes, so I don't really know. Peace comes above all for me, I can't function in a toxic or hostile environment. I will just snap and lose it terribly, I am crazy like that.
So, quit, do your events on a small scale and you'll rise. You'll be jobless for a short time, but have peace, you'll be able to attend your interviews too... Just my opinion.

  47. There's no union for private employee at all. You find this type of thing everywhere, in Ajah here, there's this school called Regency, its a husband and wife owned school. They do not pay their staff well yet everyday after school meeting is being held. The man has slept with most of the Primary teachers with the knowledge of the wife. The wife somtimes comes to school with battered face, you see her crying every now and then, wearing extremely tight pants to work to entice the man. The woman too get their wahala too. When i was in the school, i was accused falsely by the man all cos he asked me out and i blatantly refused (this man body odour can drive an insane person mad, yes insane), instead of the wife to be happy with my response, she too join and was making life unbearable for me. My money was deducted, insults were flying left, right and centre...Fast fast, i left the school say wetin.
Most private companies especially owned by Pastors are the worst organisation to work in, they claim Christ but act as Devils.

It is well, I would have said quit that job because your happiness should come first, but this Jobs are not coming at all and those that are available, comes with requirements that can make someone depressed. Just keep looking out for other Jobs till then please manage.

Nigerians generally subscribe to holding on to the job that you have. Truth is, if you dont leave a bad job, sometimes you cant get a good one. Forget union and all the other shit people are gonna tell you. Quit! You have to know it may get really hard but you must fight an get thru. Make a decision and stand by it.

Most times this so called supervisors are fools that do not know anything but because they have worked for 100years they put them in this position and they choose to frustrate the younger ones... I wake up in the morning and hate resuming in my branch

  58. I'm in an almost same position but not as bad as yours though. I resigned and won't be coming back here next year. You work in a place where your employer think they're doing you a favor, where your self esteem can diminish daily if u do not have your own self motivation. such environment is too toxic and if u can't bear, you should leave. I'm leaving for some reasons;
If i remain here i'll never have the chance to attend other interviews. the monitoring and surveillance no be small. I've missed some opportunities this year cos of this. so i figured the only way is to resign and focus on a job search latest 3 months i must get something cos i'm versatile and i have the necessary experience, and of course by God's unfailing Grace. I have my other little source of income too from a small personal job i do during weekends.
I'm the bread winner of my family (not married), but I've been able to save some money. I'll keep sending them their monthly allowances till i get something else. To be first child no easy. But i figured that if i don't break out of this place now, it will be difficult except i wait till like next year end. Not sure i can stand another one year in this place. I've made up my mind & i'm ready for whatever comes with it. Sometimes you have to take some drastic decisions to move forward. The fear of unknown is what hinders people from taking such risks. But God dey!

  61. hmmmm. my sweet heart. I can honestly relate with what you are going through. Its not easy working in private films in Nigeria.

Can you believe we have not been paid October salary till now. There is no hope of being paid before Christmas. Can I whisper how much is the salary??. They feel due to the high rate of unemployment, anything goes.

Its the likes of stellablog that keep most of us sane.

If I tell you how many years I have worked without promotion, you will not believe me. The man will employ new graduates, you will teach them the job and they will collect salary more than you. The status of the person that brought you determines how much you will be paid and how you are valued.

My dear, lets leave story for another day.

Free your mind. be happy. Its not a do or die affair. Happiness is a choice. Don't allow anybody take it from you. Do your best and leave the rest to God.

We've got a long way to go in Africa. Sexual harassement, bullying, lack of respect and many more can not be tolerate here. In fact, even the cleaner has equal right for respect, dignity, non discrimination and many more at work. If not, he can sue the company and even sell his stories to the tabloids. And no companies want bad reputation. We have unions to fight for us.
So, my sister if you can be involved in unions, that will be a starting point. Please don't give up and stay strong.

My dear the truth is this is typically what obtains here in Nigeria especially in the banks. Anyway, u have two options : either u resign now and go into event planning which is a business that will eventually grow, leveraging on the 'workplace customers ' u already know OR u give urself a time target to save (not touching at least 80% of ur income) and resign. Because clearly such a work environment will negatively affect u psychologically!

  79. I do not know Nigerian labour laws, so I am coming form a place of complete ignorance where this is concerned. Is there not a Ministry of Labour or Labour board you can go to file a report against the unlawful suspension? If such a place exists you can file a report and they would investigate the employer, you can bring up the sexual harassment and management's toxic work environment that they have created. The thing is that when you file something like this it leaves a spot of the employer's record so if other reports come forward they will see that there is already reference on file to this employer. This is what we do where I live.

Thank God for western governments, they take labour law infractions very very seriously. Every employer fear getting investigated and a ding on their record, it can be very expensive for employers and the Labour board cannot be bribed, they are perhaps one of the most vigilant and fair sectors of government here to protect workers and their rights. See if there is something similar in Nigeria.

I was almost loosing my mind, then they withheld my salary - money that was not even enough to see me through till the next pay day, I couldn't even save, so nothing to fall back on - Instead of been scared, I felt an overwhelming peace and a bust of hope, it was strange because I had only N200 to my name. Against a mountain of debt, I resigned and left for good. I didn't even fight for the money.

I continued praying, but in tongues most times because I had no idea what to pray for and continued in thanksgiving too, I memorized a lot of Scriptures as the Spirit leads... it took a while but ideas started coming, mostly from my environment, needs I hitherto overlooked. I continued praying and it became clearer what to do and how to do it, results didn't come immediately but I knew I was on the right track. There were moments of despair and doubts but they were brief because I used the Work to counter them. Then I volunteered my time as a Phonics Trainer and Mentor in public primary schools, organized by Edu-Aid CCC, so far God had proved Himself Faithful. I run my own online business from the comfort of my home, I have control over my time to do others things...

My dear, for the sake of your sanity and self esteem, leave that place. The God that showed Himself in my life will do the same for you, just have faith.

If you can't find help from your pastor and fellow members and you are here on SDK asking for advises, it means one thing : your support system is weak. You don't have the right people around you. The people you have are actually weakening you instead of strenghtening you. It could be your parents, family, church folks, boyfriend or friends. They are putting so much pressure on you that you don't value yourself like you should do. You are lacking self-confidence. But you are a good person with a good heart. I worked in marketing in ZB and was not meeting my targets. Although no one insulted me, I always felt uncomfortable during those general meetings where they display your figures for all to see. I hated marketing with a passion. So I got on my feet and committed my problem to God's hands. Lo and behold, not up to 3 months later, I got transfered to another dept where I had my peace of mind and starting performing better.
I still resigned from that bank job because I wanted a different career.
Luckily, my family was there to support me while I was job searching. I am working at another job and much happier today.
Don't worry we all go through things in life but it's only temporary. Sometimes we wish we things will change in the twinkle of an eye but trust God. He is the master of time. May the Holy Spirit guide your steps. Goodluck
