ArmsGATE -CBN Governor Emefiele Roped In

Ongoing investigations into how $2.1bn meant for the procurement of arms was squandered may lead to the premature exit of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

A source in the presidency told The Guardian that circumstances that surrounded the appointment of Emefiele, including recent revelations about movement of the funds, and his involvement in the unexplained presence of two former heads of commercial banks, when President Buhari hosted members of the international business community in London, are being counted against the governor.

“Already,” the source said, “a small team of legal and financial experts has been directed to weigh the various implications the removal of the CBN chief could trigger, especially to prevent a similar backlash, as when the past government engineered the untimely retirement of former CBN governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.”

The source explained that the team was set up to examine all sides to the issue, adding that the presidency is worried that such enormous amounts of money were carted away from CBN as if “it was in Idi Amin’s era.”
“One thing you should known about Buhari is that before he takes a crucial decision that involves prominent appointees, he sets up a small committee to investigate the issues and report back to him”

The source said the embarrassing presence of the two top bankers at the London meeting infuriated the President to the extent he approached the duo, asking how they were invited, and informing them that he personally handled the selection of who attended.
“Checks revealed the possibility that since the well known bankers added their voices in recommending Emefiele for the CBN job, he (Emefiele) might have hinted the two, convinced their clout would open doors for them.

“There is also information that the current CBN governor is remotely related to the immediate past Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy (CME) in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.”

Another source disclosed that should the plan to have the CBN governor resign sail through, a replacement might be sought from the South East or South South geopolitical zones to avoid outrage and cries of marginalisation by the present administration.

  8. They should also be ready to probe Mallam sanusi, cos he was the CBN governor during the larger part of the last regime. They think they can go after emefiele only...they must go after Sanusi also. They have developed cold feet regarding sanusi cos of his position, but what is good for the goose is good for the gander. I have deliberately avoided mentioning the tribal issues involved.

    3. Big fool anon 10:55. It's ostriches like you that claim to be the leaders of tomorrow, talking about tribalism. Why was Sanusi removed? Is it not because he was acting as an impediment and resisting their looting efforts? Everyone knows Emefiele has a reputation for complacency and "yes-sir"ism and that's why he was given the post. If Sanusi or any other person is found culpable, they should be brought to justice irrespective of tribe or religion or position.

  10. There absolutely no way he will be exempted in the whole saga. $4b was withdrawn from the excess crude account just two weeks before the presidential election. Cbn governor approved it on the orders of Jonathan and okonjo iweala

  17. How does this relate to the arms deal... It is good that PMB is trying to recover stolen money and tackling corruption, but it should be done under the ambit of the law and with facts and not destoying people's Integrity...we hv people in d Apc that hv nt been probed and we all knw they stole money too.

  18. I am not surprised about this news about Emefiele. During the past election, this man with some top Lagos men were busy sharing dollars in the night. They are the ones that are praying that the dollar should never come down because they are benefitting heavily from it.

  26. PDP killed the Naira. With all these expositions, has it ever occurred to Nigerians that we would have been worse than Somalia, had GEJ won a re-election. The Naira would have exchanged for a N1,000 to a US$ in a jiffy.

  27. Did Jona authorised the then CBN Gov _Sanusi to give out N100M to his people (as victims of bomb blast)?

If they keep tracing the funds, don't be surprised some BVs' name will appear.

  29. Buhari already has his mind set on replacing Emefiele with his own person and is just looking for an excuse. The incident that happened in Washington, DC, Stella, I can authoritatively tell you was not caused by Emefiele. I know because I happened to have been in the Marriot hotel on 14th street in DC on the afternoon of the day that that dinner took place and I was so shocked to see one of the so called very close confidants of Buhari who is now on his cabinet as a Minister, (I will not mention names) having a meeting with one of the ex-Bank chiefs that Buhari detests. I watched as this bank chief escorted him (new minister) out to the front of the hotel, and he got into one of the waiting cabs in the front lobby. My shock was so great, na after the man leave it dawned on me that I could have snapped a picture with my phone, chai. But I saw this with my koro koro eye. So, when the news broke out later that night/the next day regarding the disgrace at the function and Emefiele being blamed telling the bank chiefs, my mind went to what I had seen earlier and wondered if this Buhari's confidant was not a double agent and was not the one passing information around because nosy parker as I be now, I been stroll by and as the bank chief waka back, he was holding a brochure for chamber of commerce, who know if na deliver the man come deliver am. Abeg make them leave Emefiele alone with speculation, their story just assumes that just because he knows these ex-bank chiefs and they appeared at a function then he invited them, but these bank chiefs know a lot of people and any number of these people could have been the ones to leak the information to them, not necessarily him, for example, the "staunch" Buhari hench man I saw in the hotel with one of the ex-bank chiefs the afternoon of the event, what business did he have there? Perhaps collecting $25,000 for information? Mtchew!
