Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the arrest of his predecessor's security adviser, for allegedly stealing some $2bn (£1.3bn).
Sambo Dasuki is accused of awarding phantom contracts to buy 12 helicopters, four fighter jets and ammunition. He denies the allegations.
The equipment was meant for the fight against Boko Haram Islamist militants.
Soldiers have complained that despite the military's huge budget, they were ill-equipped to fight.
- Mr Dasuki reacted to the order by saying he had never been invited to appear before the weapon procurement investigative panel, which made the allegations.
He was already under house arrest when the president issued the order for his arrest.
This was as part of an ongoing trial for allegedly possessing illegal firearms.
The court for that trial had ordered for his passport to be released for him to be able to travel to the UK for treatment for suspected prostate cancer.
It was expected that the trial would continue on his return. But the government refused to let him leave the country.
Before he got into power in May, Mr Buhari vowed to investigate corruption in the previous government, in which Mr Dasuki served.
The BBC's Bashir Sa'ad Abdullahi says soldiers have reported they are better equipped since President Buhari came into office, but the previous president's supporters say this is because those weapons were ordered while Goodluck Jonathan was in power.
A spokesman for Mr Buhari said the corruption resulted in the needless deaths of thousands of Nigerians.
Boko Haram has killed thousands in north-eastern Nigeria in its campaign to create an Islamic state.
In the latest militant attack, at least 32 people were killed by a suicide bomber on a vegetable market in the north-eastern city of Yola on Tuesday night.
This led Facebook to activate its safety check feature for the first time following an attack in Nigeria.
Oversaw the fight against Boko Haram while Goodluck Jonathan was president
- Accused of stealing $2bn meant for weapons for military's fight against Boko Haram
- Accused of possessing illegal weapons
- Under house arrest
- Reportedly one of the officers who arrested the current President Muhammadu Buhari when he was military head of state 30 years ago, something he denies.

ReplyDeleteWeapons were ordered by GEJ, I agree. How long has the BH stuff been on for? So the weapons were trekking from wherever it was ordered from?
DeleteDasuki should go and wear uniform and rest in jail
Its a real big money...he should not be sentenced. They should take him to sambisa forest to face the guys himself. Since he allowed them to grow

ReplyDeleteI hope this is not a plot to punish this guy for placing Baba GoSlow under arrest in the 1984 coup.
ReplyDeleteYou are a fool.

DeletePreviously I thought it wise to remain ambivalent towards this saga, however some salient security have been raised that threaten our national security and I think that the actors involved should ask themselves if settling private scores is more important than our collective security.I personally consider the riposte of col Sambo dasuki as a breach of security.I see no reason why the good colonel should advertise to the whole world the number of jets and helicopters procured under his watch. Our enemies must be watching with glee.I am a pdp supporter but I honestly think a closed trial will be better under the circumstances.dasuki please stop singing, omerta is the way forward.

ReplyDeleteThe money is more than $2bn.
This guy is certainly going to jail.
Those saying the weapons being used now were ordered under Jonathan, so it took more than 5 years to receive orders?
It's a pity the kind of atrocities that went on under the nose of the former president which he claims to know nothing about.

It begs to question, was Jonathan really so stupid that all these were happening in his administration and he wasn't aware? My good Lord! And he was our president??? And now a hero?? Fuck that shiiit.
ReplyDeleteJonathan is the most incompetent president ever. I pray the western world blocks every politician or people in power that wants to seek medical help in their country. That might just teach them to invest in their own country. The cheek to ask to go to the UK to seek medical treatment. What of poor Nigerians without such privilege?
DeleteThis is not about Jonathan now. ....the rot in the army has gone on for faaaaar too long...
DeleteLong before the Jonathan administration. .forget Jonathan and Buhari bashing and focus on the salient issues . Who will correct the ROT in the Nigerian army?
Shet up there

DeleteIMMUNITY AMIDST SCARCITY:
ReplyDeleteFuel @ #400 per litre!!!
For the first time in a long while, the nation is enduring an unexplained fuel scarcity; no one has been questioned by the Senate or HoR. The Minister of Petroleum, who doubles as the NNPC Chairman, is the President and Commander in Chief, and enjoys the full immunity that comes with that office. Our legislators are under the yoke of partisanship and cannot muster the courage to extend a simple invitation to him to grill him on the grueling scarcity.
The one who you should question for the operational details in NNPC, the GMD, also doubles as the 'Shadow Minister' of Petroleum Ministry. In the event of his invitation by the Senate, I do not know if he will appear there as the GMD NNPC or the Minister of State for Petroleum. He has one leg in operations, and another leg in the policy/politics of the industry as a cabinet Minister. He shuttles between FEC Meetings on Wednesdays, weekly NNPC Management Meetings, and maybe NNPC Board Meetings if the President decides to delegate the role of chairman to him. He is trapped betwixt disparate roles, in a sector that feeds the nation.
This is how we have enthroned political interests over an industry that should be run professionally. Those who crafted the NNPC Act did not envisage that the President will find the role of the Petroleum Minister and Chairman of the Board of NNPC, so 'juicy' to want to add to his role of President and Commander in Chief.
As things stand now, no one can question the NNPC. They are enjoying the President's immunity as their board chairman. Unfortunately, our cars have no such immunity; they run on petrol. That is the naked CHANGE before us.
God bless you for speaking my mind.everyone is keeping mute about this fuel scarcity..if it was the Jonathan era, every cockroach and rat would have come out to say rubbish and come out with the most inhumane memes..now everybody don go dumb..
DeleteEnough pls... Have u ever heard of the word saboteurs? U didn't hear nnpc come out to say it has over 1.4b litres of fuel with the directive that all nnpc filling stations should be open 24 Hrs yet majority have disregarded this directive. PMB isn't our problem but dos working against him to make nonsense of his administration.
DeleteSo true
DeleteI couldn't have said it better. God bless you for this comment.
DeleteNigeria, which way forward?
Buhari isn't pulling his weight at all.
Stella, can you please make the above comment a stand alone post and topic of discussion for mature and enlightened minds?
This isn't about bashing the current government, it's about the general public needing an eye opener.
As a popular OAP said in some of his random musings, we have (again) fallen into deep sleep, for the past 6 months, we need to wake up.
So true! We all just seemed to be OK with the present situation that no one is raising roof...OK na

ReplyDeleteWe Nigerians are really somehow. We have been asking for what happened to all the monies in the defence budget? We all saw how our soldiers ran from insurgents during battle engagements- including the ones that ran into Cameroon in that famous "tactical maneuver". We all knew our soldiers didn't have weapons,so many died.Today, the president of the day is trying to find out what happened to all that money & of course, the former NSA is the one to ask cos he was in charge of war time procurements. Now how on earth would some Nigerians be asking that this man be left alone? Una dey see our roads? schools? Hospitals? Living condition? So? 2.1 billion dollars? You guys want the matter dropped!? Our monies? Our own very money? If you call it a witch hunt,I love this kind of witch hunt as long as our monies come back.
