Biafra?...Please Read This!

Those who send you to the streets in the name of Biafra live in mansions, and their children are abroad‏...

The agitation for the actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra has taken a new dimension since the new leader of the struggle, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu declared readiness to fight all the way. Kanu subsequently launched a radio station, Radio Biafra where he served as the Managing-Editor till he was reportedly arrested by Nigeria secret police, the Department of State Services (DSS).

While I recognize the constitutional rights of any Nigerian or group of Nigerians to freedom of expression, association or agitation for their rights, I am also aware of the fact that most of the Biafran sympathizers are merely ignorant of the true motives of those behind the renewed agitation for the state of Biafra.

Those who send our young ones to the streets in the name of Biafra are mostly corrupt and criminally minded elites chilling in their air-conditioned mansions and riding in super cars, with their children and family members studying or living abroad, and yet, they take advantage of our sad economic situation and poverty of which their greed and corrupt practices contributed immensely to, to send our young ones into the streets to cause troubles and disrupt economic activities.

The poor young Nigerians who are mostly jobless or traders struggling to feed twice a day are the ones who get killed by stray bullets when they clash with security forces or in other situations whenever their protests go violent. Their sponsors and leaders who mostly support them secretly go about their businesses freely and still guarded by 'Nigerian' security operatives.

If peradventure anything goes wrong and their agitation turns to any form of war, their sponsors all have int'l passports with multiple visa, plus adequate bank account balances enough to fly them out Nigeria with their families, leaving same innocent young Nigerians to suffer it alone in the long run.

Again, I call on every young Nigerian who didn't witness the civil war to kindly find time to sit their parents down and ask them what their experiences were during the war or Google out 'effect of the Nigerian civil war' to learn more about the cost of choosing war over dialogue.

So wise up fellow young Nigerians, as our complicated challenges are not about dividing the country and actualizing Biafra. Let's remember what we went through during the last civil war. Let's remember we lost over a million brothers and sisters. Among those who died were great young men and women - pilots, engineers, teachers, politicians, economists, religious and traditional leaders, who could have taken us further than where we are today, as a country!

Ask yourself: How have we loved and managed ourselves and resources in the states we want to separate out of Nigeria into Biafra? What have we done or achieved with all our internal resources, human and material and allocations received from the federal government over the decades?
Nigeria isn't bigger than America or China. All we need to do is look inward, take time to understand our diversity, how to take advantage of it and live peacefully as one nation. There's also urgent need to review our leadership, as a people, our institutions and participate actively in our governments, as youth, rather than calling for separation.

There's also this obviously exciting need to simply key into the new government of President Buhari and VP Osinbajo, to support and encourage them on their various promising programmes, which are mostly targeted at making life better for the common Nigerian. For once, Nigeria has produced a president and vice president who are both not multi-millionaires and billions with Godfathers dictating for them. For the first time, we have a government that's truly the desire of majority of Nigerians, and all we now need to do is support same people we found worthy and voted in, and patiently wait to see if they deliver or not.

But as a person, I am strongly convinced that Nigeria is moving to greater heights soonest, irrespective of the temporary challenges facing us.
Let's not also fall for a few greedy politicians and businessmen who are only after what they will gain. Most of those behind the call for Biafra are greedy politicians, businessmen and supporters of corruption who can no longer survive adequately in today's Nigeria, especially as our institutions are being strengthened to become serious and transparent. Let's not also give people the chance of thinking that those calling for division of Nigeria are same aggrieved people from a certain part of the country who didn't vote for the new government and went further to criticize the President for allegedly side-lining them by his appointments which they termed as 'lopsided' and lacking federal character.

Admittedly, things aren't going well with Nigeria and Nigerians today, but it's a phase and trying time we'll overcome soonest, especially as President Buhari inaugurates his ministers this Wednesday, to enable them commence work officially immediately. Let's not practice the story of the tortoise... hurrying to get out of the toilet pit after staying for 6 days and due to be released and crown a king on the 7th day.

Imagine how hard things have been even without war!

Imagine how harder it will be when we start a war again and no longer moving freely to work and fend for our loved ones.

Beyond its result-yielding fight against corruption and impunity, making urgent and sustainable plans to commence the payment of N5,000 monthly stipends to 25 million vulnerable Nigerians, the Buhari administration is poised to lift millions of Nigerians out of extreme poverty by providing social protection and safety worth 2.5 trillion Naira from the Special Intervention Fund.

While I will continue to stand against the call for Biafran state and encourage our youth not to be used by certain selfish individuals and rather embrace dialogue, I urge the federal and state governments, especially the states where the agitations are emanating from, to dialogue with the leaders of the Biafran agitators with a few to finding a lasting solution before things get out of hand, as this was how the Boko Haram group started. They weren't taking seriously and today, even with international help, we've not been able to defeat them easily.

I also challenge our respected religious and traditional leaders, especially those in the affected states, to use their influence and call their young ones to order, as part of their obligation to the nation.
Most urgently, President Muhammadu Buhari, as the Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria must rise up to the occasion, call on the governors of affected state, mandate them to work and comply with relevant federal authorities in their respective states, to restore peace and order, so Nigerians in those states can freely go about their normal lives.

At a time when there are violent conflicts and global economic challenges across the war, Nigeria cannot afford a fresh civil war. We must collectively do everything to remain as one strong nation, fight our common and biggest enemy - the Boko Haram insurgents and support the new and promising government to lead us to the promised land.

    1. You raised salient points but the unnecessary praises of the present administration was a major distraction for me. Objectivity is important when handling sensitive issues like this.

Eka joy, you are getting it wrong. They are not protesting the government's so called discrimination towards the ibos. They are agitating for the release of their radio leader kalu, which from my own point of view is a very stupid move. Your governors have been engaging in the misappropriation of funds meant for developing your state for a long time. Yet no one has batted an eyelid. Those allocations are still being given to the states so what exactly are they complaining about? They are fanning the embers of war and also opening old wounds. The people involved in this folly are devoid of any form of literacy. You can start by checking out the comments of their reps on this blog.

    1. I am not a fan of Biafra but when living in Nigeria is worst than the Biafra, division is better. Nigeria over populated and that's why many citizens are suffering. The smaller the number the better the citizens receive a better government. People who are afraid of break up are benefactors from this country and they may not find their stand easily if Biafra is created. Zik and co fought for Nigeria independence and I didn't read where their children joined to achieve that. So the people fighting for Biafra mustn't wait for the children of ALL to fight for their course. Everything must not end in war. War happened in the dark ages. A coward has never achieved any feat in life. Let's just be optimistic that we shall be successful.

Inasmuch as I do not want biafra mostly cos I do not want war and cos it's too late to start uprooting myself from my present life, the cause of this issue shouldn't be overlooked.

    6. Well said.

As much as many who are in this are a bit misguided. The article to me makes no valid point. Only the point of cowardice.
"Go and ask your fathers what happened in the war..."
      The fear of striking out.
The Mandela u celebrate, the South Africa you laud, I'm sure people may have told the blacks the same thing. Keep living under the social order because
      1) people who have challanged it before we're killed
      2) you may achieve it and still fall out.
3)after achieving it, you may not function well.
      Fear of uncertainty.
But if George Washington and co hadn't rioted and thrown the heavily taxed tea of the British into the ocean in the Boston Tea Party riot and fought the revolutionary war, how would America have been achieved? If the French hadn't sacked the monarchs too?

War and history remembers only the victors. The vanquished is always seen as foolhardy. So, that is what the 1966 struggle looks like now. Saying, because people suffered hardship then, no one should attempt it again is an invalid point. Ask of how many battles Robert the Bruce of Scotland fought before he was victorious. Is there any struggle that is ever easy?

About preparedness, even at Independence, many people said Nigeria wasn't ready and it won't work and all that. People will always drag ur feet. Its natural.

On followership, whatever the motives are, not everyone will be on the field in every struggle. Those who sit in the comfort of their home and sponsor it are as important as the ones marching out with flags. Don't underestimate their value. The igbos I know don't have a central head, they don't follow blindly. They followed Ojukwu because they felt d cause was valid. Every single person matching has his own reason.

As for dialogue, the writer insinuated that the biafrans of 1966 chose war over dialogue, hereby exposing his ignorance on history. Biafra seceded, it was Nigeria who declared war against them, not the other way round. Has he ever heard of the Aburi accord? And how Gowon went back on the terms of settlement?

The article is appropos to nothing and sounds too subjective. I'm not war mongering or even interested in the cause of Biafra. But I'm yet to hear a valid reason why they shouldn't ask for cessation. Nigeria was originally a confederation and even till date, the tribal awareness is high. I warned against fanning the embers of division during the election, oba talk and all but people felt it was okay., Now, let's reap what we've sown.
The writer also downplayed the issue of unlawful arrest. There should be no double standards, nobody should be arrested unlawfully, whether Kalu or not. The present government might handle this thing forcefully and exacerbate it. Let's all be careful

If u have ever been consulted to evaluate the oneness of this country,am sure,u will most probably be flabberwhelmed to discover the rot and fallacy called Nigeria.
Just yesterday,i was on my way to work and behold the VP the very Person of Prof Osibanjo was going back to Abuja after o discovered he always comes to church on sundays in lagos, with over 35 convoys,i just asked,is this not tax payers money being wasted unjustly, and like a beehive, this ApC apologist and fanatic from Yoruba descent, almost strangled me alive and cursed the living day light out of me.
He didnt stop there until i got to airport car pack, only then,i saw how tribalistic we have became,he charged all the drivers in the park obviously from his large yoruba descent and if i wasn't wise enough to maintain my halloween chambered behaviour,it would have obviously become another tribal fight between the yorubas and Igbos.
Now, Mr Consultant, what and where in the world of 21st century do people live and act like this?what and where do u make of this sheer threat from this falsehood called Nigeria that will make me not agitate for what i hopefully, believe in?
Plz dont be caught in something u dont understand and instead of rubbing ur distinguished and most eloquent trait in the mud,i beg u continue applying to This govt for business contract and stay clear This Clarion call for a nation called Biafra.

  36. Nobody wants war but let truth be told the Igbos have suffered long enough in this country Nigeria. The whole south-east is grossly under developed and the government is doing totally nothing about it. In terms of revenue, the eastern zone generates massive revenue in this country just on their ingenuity.
If there are jobs there, Lagos will not be over populated today but the government wants and have subjected them to abject poverty and slavery.

An average Igbo man struggles for everything they have. Education, jobs everything, they struggle for. Go to Aba and see their efforts in production but there is no effort from the government to assist them with mechanisation.

Believe me if the level of ingenuity found in the east is half found in Yoruba land, they must agitate and make their land China of today or even surpass them.

What the Igbo are agitating for is freedom from slavery, let development reach them.
But then, we Igbos too have a whole lot of issues....
We are our worst enemies. With our greed, aggressiveness and intolerance of other tribes and ourselves makes matter worse.
If we can forget biafra, stick to dialogue, and check how we can help the situation, hold our leaders responsible for whatever they pledged, we'll give ourselves the biafra we want.
Me, I will not and cannot fight for any biafra. Let our governors do what they are suppose to do for us first with the money given to them or if they were not given money for their budgets, they should tell us them we will know what wwe should be agitating for.

  40. Nice write up and reminder as regards war.

But as I read through, I was expecting to see where the writer will advice the govt to find out the reasons Nnamdi Kanu gave his followers, to make them wanna lay down their lives for this Biafran course..... And tackle it.

I have never listened to radio Biafra but I think some of the reasons are thus:

After the civil war nothing was done to rehabilitate the eastern region; some would argue why should the FG rehabilitate the east when they caused and brought destruction upon themselves?.... The rehabilitation of the north east ravaged by boko haram will suffice...

Governors should educate their subjects to stop threatening of sending easterners packing from their states cause they can't be seen as foreigners in their own country..... Even some tribes are so many in London that they have streets named after them in London, that doesn't mean they don't commit crime in London., no one has threatened to drown them.

Religious leaders should educate their followers to stop killing igbos whenever a westerner mimicks any prophet cause igbos are not related to the westerners.

If you find yourself in a country where your people are being killed because a white man drew a cartoon or being threatened to be sent packing or drowned for little misunderstanding, would you still feel like a part of that country?

I'm not a pro-biafra but these issues needs to be addressed... And I believe this agitations will probably bring about it.

  43. Thank you so much for this write-up. I posted something similar to this and my comment went missing.

Same thing happened during the civil war when that bearded man led Igbos to war , only to abandon them when it became tough. The Biafran radio deceived millions of Igbos by their biased news, they were praising Biafra militia when they were not equipped. When the Nigerian army conquered most of the eastern states ,Biafran radio was still telling lies.

Nnamdi Kanu lives abroad with his family. If anything happens, he will declare asylum and will be granted protection. The millions of illiterate and close-minded individuals spearheading this Biafran bullshit should be kept in jail for a very long time together with Nnamdi Kanu. The illiterates need to be educated about the history of Nigeria. As for the rich ones sponsoring it, they are doing that for their selfish gains.

Do not be deceived, we do not have international backing. Before these foreign countries will back you, you must have something to offer. They care about their own gains. Do you think these foreign countries will back Biafra over oil rich Nigeria? How many times will history repeat itself before we learn.

What do you need Biafra for? You people are the ones selling your brothers to the highest bidder. Your past Governors are the worst in Nigeria. If given Biafra, you will end up killing yourselves over it. If your Governors cant develop a small state, tell me what you need Biafra for. Your senators are just interested in acquiring millions and storing for their generations.

Pro-Biafrans are bunch of good for nothing people looking for avenue to display their corruption without any interference.

Dear President Buhari, keep that instigator Nnamdi Kanu locked up till further notice. When it all set, he will be the first to run. Do you really think Calabar, AkwaIbom, Delta State and Rivers state will join you people in your foolery?

Mr. Buhari sidelined Igbos in his Government, so fucking what? Don't you have senators? All the Ministers from Igboland that were nominated during Jonathan's regime, what did they do for us? All we want is a better Nigeria . Face your thieving Governors and leave Nigeria alone.

United states is made up different people, did you see them trying to break out?

Try and be like the Yorubas, they have perfected the act of ass-kissing that they get whatever they want from Nigeria. They are CEOS and Directors of companies in Nigeria. So you think they don't want their own country where they can throw owambe whenever they want and block the street. Trust me, whenever they decide they want their own country, they will follow it in a diplomatic cunning manner, you will not know when you will dash it to them together with interest.

Everything is not gragra without sense. Wisdom is profitable to direct.

Has created this radio station and started agitating people. For what reason? Another war? How does it benefit igbos? The millions who died and the set back the SE experienced are not enough lessons??

People should be wise and realise these guys have hidden interests that benefit only themselves.
