Tanzanians Hail Jonathan As Hero Of Credible Election In Africa

Ahead of former President Goodluck Jonathan arrival to Dar es Salaam as leader of the Commonwealth international observers to monitor the Tanzanian general elections scheduled for October 25, citizens of that country are anxious to have the former Nigerian leader who they described as ‘a hero of free and fair election in Africa’.

Reports coming from the country indicate that the people of Tanzania are delighted that Jonathan would be on ground leading the Commonwealth election monitoring team. This is as a result of the ex-President’s exemplary feat of conceding defeat even before the end of the electoral process and subsequently handing over power to the opposition party. Jonathan will be leaving Nigeria for the East African country on Monday.

It was gathered that Tanzanians are optimistic that his presence alongside other observers would bring credibility to the elections believed to be the toughest and closest elections in the country’s history. Like Nigeria’s March 28polls, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi, CCM, party, which has been in power since Tanzania’s return to multiparty democracy in 1992 is being challenged by a united opposition that has increasingly been making significant electoral gains.

The Guardian of Tanzania in its editorial themed ‘High profile figures among observers will add credibility to poll process, results’, poured encomiums on the former Nigerian president, describing him as a democrat who has pointed the way forward for the rest of Africa.
The Guardian further wrote that “Jonathan’s voluntary handover of power to the opposition wrote a new chapter for Nigeria’s democracy and Africa, given the fact that it is rare for sitting presidents in Africa to hand over powers to winning opposition parties.”
In the course of his trip to Tanzania, Jonathan is scheduled to meet with the country’s president, Jakaya Kikwete, other heads of delegation as well as the local and international media.

  1. A very nice, humble and honest ex President.
    Nigerians will never forget him.
He gave in to the threat of violence from the APC. He doesn't want another senseless slaughtering of innocent non hausa fulanis and youth corpers all over the north.

Goodluck's issue is like that of a orphan child, if he washes his hands he is wasting water, if he chooses not to, he is called dirty..everything he does will always be interpreted in one way or the other

  3. I agree. Jonathan got the power sector, agric sector & electoral sector reforms right. I also believe nkonjo iweala was an asset in government. She probably wasnt utilized rightly in his administration but shes not a thief.

I love d way he chose jega for d position & did not put pressure on him or put a yes man as head of d commission. They should continue using university vc's as inec chairmen. They have a lot to lose - in terms of reputation - and will do the right thing. Tanzania is right to employ him as an electoral monitor.

  7. History will always remember him as a man who paved the way for proper, free and fair elections. He signalled to African leaders and indeed the whole world that election is not a do or die affair. This singular act is his biggest achievement during his tenure and history will forever be thankful to him for been a perfect gentleman.
    GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

    1. You are right. If he did otherwise, the June 12 incident that eventually killed Abiola would have repeated itself. That June12 election is on record as the fairest ever conducted in Nigeria. Following swiftly is the last one that removed Jonathan

  22. Abeg wetin concern Rivers state with Biafra? YOu see why these igbo people need to be kept in check? Rivers state does not have igbo people. It has Ikwere people who although they speak a language remotely similar to igbo, have made it clear they are not igbo and do not wish to be considered igbo. The rest of Rivers state is made up of people who are more ijaw in nature than igbo, but by force Igbo people tried to claim them before during the civil war and they are back with their tricks again. Shebi all this is just because of the oil in the Niger delta they want to clamin all south south people abi? Why did they not mount a protest in their states or go to Abuja or lagos or Kano? What are they looking for in Port Harcourt? They should be shot at sight b/c this will soon lead to genocide of the south south people, so Igbo's can claim the oil as the SS people do not want to follow them by choice.
