Nurse Bags Seven-Year Jail Term In Ado-Ekiti Over ‘Failed’ Abortion

A quack nurse, Taibat Jegede, popularly called Alhaja, was Tuesday, reportedly sentenced to 7 years imprisonment in Ado Ekiti for killing a client, one Seyi Ibitoye, after attempting to carry out an abortion on her which allegedly went bad.

According to Daily Post, the prosecution counsel, led by Femi Onipede who disclosed that the accused had once been imprisoned on a similar charge, called six witnesses to prove that the accused administered injections on the deceased who died of bleeding complications in May 2012.

Reports also indicate that Onipede further led witnesses in evidence to reveal that the defense was a quack nurse, who dropped out from the College of Health Technology, Akure in 2006.

According to reports, Onipede disclosed that the abortion was one of the series carried out by the accused and it was done in her one bedroom apartment, where she was a neighbour with the deceased, adding that exhibits recovered from the accused include pieces of syringe with needles, ‎injections, and gloves among others.

Meanwhile, Alhaja who claimed to be a licensed agent, claimed she had worked in different places, including the British American Tobacco clinic in Ibadan, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital and eventually in Rauz Hospital, Apo in Abuja.

The lady who is in her 30’s, reportedly claimed that she had treated the deceased for body pains when she complained of irregularities from her menstrual period.

The presiding Judge, Justice Abodunde, ruled that the evidence administered were the best guide to convict the accused, since a trial court can convict on even single evidence proven beyond reasonable doubt.

The Judge, however, sentenced Alhaja to seven years imprisonment.

  13. It is unfortunate that the abortion even took place in the first place. The rate at which people go about terminating foetus is alarming and I think its high time we think about relaxing the laws prohibiting abortion to prevent people from patronising quacks while also avoiding complications.

  14. It's best that abortion be legalised in the country to avoid all these quacks from killing people.
