German World Cup hero Bastian Schweinsteiger has unleashed his lawyers on to a Chinese toymaker which is marketing WW2 Nazi soldier dolls named after him and looking like him.
The Bastian range of toy soldiers has the 31-year-old midfielder for Manchester United dressed as a Wehrmacht veteran complete with the swastika-bearing eagle on his uniform and, in one of them, he wears the medal ribbon given to soldiers who took part in the first winter offensive in Russia in 1941.
The firm DiD in Hong Kong is behind the Bastian range. Records show that Japanese businessman Takuya Umezawa is the director of the firm which also produces James Bond dolls and WW1 soldier figures.
The Chinese company marketing Bastian described his appearance to the soccer superstar as "purely coincidental."
He added: "The figure is based on a typical German. We believe most Germans look like this. Bastian is a common name in Germany."
Media lawyer Ulrich Amelung said: "This is a clear violation of the rights of Schweinsteiger. The portrayal of him wearing a swastika uniform is a clear case of defamation and insult."
Neither the player nor his management wanted to comment but Bild said it had learned that legal proceedings to halt the sale of the soldier dolls was underway.
