Lagos Shuts Chinese Firm Over Worker’s Death

Lagos State Government has shut Hongxing Steel Company Limited, a Chinese company based in Amuwo-Odofin Local Government for safety violations.
The state government issued the stop-work order following the death of a casual worker, Mr. Emeka Umoh. He sustained severe burns after liquefied iron spilled on him on September 23, 2015.

Vanguard learnt that he died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH, where he was rushed to for treatment by the management.

Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, LSSC, Mr. Fouad Oki, in a statement after visiting the company, said that the company failed to adhere to the state safety standards.

Oki lamented the working condition in the company, saying it was deplorable.
He noted that a safety audit of the company that was earlier conducted by the LSSC team showed that very little safety measure was put in place by the management.

Oki said: “We have no option than to give the closure directive because the working condition in the company is harsh and totally unacceptable. It was unacceptable to Lagos as a work-place.”

Mr. Uche Eke, the Public Relations Manager of the company, while reacting to the closure, said it would serve as a notice to the management to improve on its work-place safety measures, adding, “when it is improved, it will help to avoid future hazards.’’

They should not bother re-opening PLEASE!

    2. Some of these people in position sef dont have sense...imagine him saying the safety audit that was done showed the safety level was very low yet they allowed them to continue till someone died.
Lawyers in 9ja dont even know how to make money...this has shown that the govt agency failed in its responsibility hence they and d company should be sued...

    3. What happens to the other workers? I doubt if naija has workers compensation schemes. The company can afford to pay workers during this period.

    4. Really? Because it is a Chinese company the regulatory body is coming to flex muscle.
I was a house officer working at General hospital lagos island during the ebola saga, there were no gloves, sanitizers, and other personal protective equipments!
Where were they???? Abi they were waiting for us to get ebola first before they do their work.
The sooner we realise that prevention is the key to solving most problems, the better for us. You did a survey and found them wanting yet you left them to operate until someone is dead.

    6. Lagos how element needs to check the activities of all the Chinese and the likes.
They don't pay any tax yet they tax Nigerians heavily when you patronize them.
Last week I was @Zen on Isaac John GRA ikeja with a few friends for lunch by the time they bring in my receipt I was shocked.
Our bill was 85k but we ended up paying over 115k
They call one consumption tax of 10%
One is service charge of another 10%
And then overall VAT of another 5%
I was shocked to my bone marrow as I couldn't vomit what I had already taken .
The worst part is that the manager brought out Lagos state internal revenue approval to back it there claims up .
And to add more to my misery some police officers were stationed there to enforce this rip off .
It's a shame our country is bn swindled right to our faces. I ve bn looking for where to lodge my complaint since that day ..
Even though I had to pay grudgingly but I know one day this country will get there.

  13. Good.

Hope they learn from this because they never do and the desperation of casual workers because of of no job in the country makes it worse by accepting to work under unfavourable conditions.

    1. Must you go there? You are the reason why they are still in business. Look at chocolate royal or whatever, Nigerians despite that incident still patronize them.
