Kano State Officially Announces 14 Year Jail Term For Rapists Without Option Of Fine

The Kano State Solicitor General, Mukthar Daneji, has said the state has finally put a 14-year jail term without option of fine as minimum punishment for rapists.

Speaking during Justice for All Conference in the State, Wednesday, the Solicitor General noted that the punishment for rape which used to be one or two years or fine has now been changed with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

He said the punishment was increased because of the rapid rise in rape cases in the state.
Mr. Danije, while not giving official figures, explained that many parents now come forward to report their children being raped. He attributed it to the awareness campaign put forward by the state.
The Solicitor General disclosed that so far, they have disposed hundreds of cases and many people have been convicted after found guilty.

The Country Director of the Justice for All, Bob Arnot, said his organisation is working in collaboration with the police and judiciary to increase safety, security and justice reform aspect of sexual gender violations.

He noted that the J4A was assisting NGOs and CSOs to establish referral centers for victims of HIV and other sexual abuse problems.

Bob Anort worried that J4A has recorded minimal successes in terms of getting justice for the over 1000 cases it has come across.

    1. Death is too easy. Being in jail, they will live to regret their action. As in bitter regret. The lack of freedom, crappy food, unclean environment, lack of good health care, infact lack of everything a normal human being should be entitled to. That is a very big punishment.

  8. Other States should do the same, it's a start.

Later, we can change it to death sentence or castration before being thrown in jail for life; you destroy a life, you don't get to enjoy yours!

  9. Nice one but na today? We all know that such laws are not being followed, they are just mere paper talk. It will be so great if this is really done without bribery interfering in between.

  20. Why should there be the option of paying a fine to get off a rape conviction? Why? This is sickening to say the least. Other nations atmre enacting forward-looking laws but Kano's is retrogressive and inhumane esp to the plight of girls and women. Stop peeing on the legs of womenfolk while you say its raining. The rape law must not make room for a fine...#goodcausetospeakup
