The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has sacked 11 of its staff for various offences bordering on sharp practises while 914 senior cadre personnel were promoted.
Director General of NYSC, Brigadier General Johnson Olawumi, yesterday said in Makurdi that all the staff sanctioned together with those promoted would receive their letters soon.
Olawumi spoke when he declared open the scheme’s maiden edition of a Preparatory Course for state Coordinators Course 1 (PCSC 1/15) for assistant directors held at the Nigerian School of Military Engineering (NASME) barrack in Makurdi.
“As part of (NYSC) efforts to bring sanity into our operations and rid the scheme of a few bad eggs giving the scheme a bad name, just last week, government approved the dismissal of 11 staff for engaging in different acts of misconduct while nine others were given various sanctions such as warning letters, loss of seniority, termination of appointment and compulsory retirement from service,” he said.
According to him, the 914 promoted were among 1,541 staff who attended the 2015 senior staff promotion exercise in Illorin, Kwara State, even as he added that the promotion of qualified staff in junior cadre would be released soon.
The DG also stressed that the maiden annual preparatory course has been packaged to address corruption, unnecessary bureaucracy that delay work speed and gross inefficiency in the public sector and among other things close the visible gaps in the training circle of the NYSC for enhanced performance.
Earlier, NASME commandant, Major General Bamidele Ogunkale, advised the participants of the course with the theme: “Succession Planning Strategy for Effective Administration” to arm themselves with the will to succeed as the exercise promises to be tedious but rewarding at the end.
On her part, the state coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Esther Atamewan commended the initiative of the DG, noting that the new idea would surely chart a new course for the emergence of well equipped administrator that will assume the role of state coordinators in future.
