FESTAC Robbery: Police Shifts Blame To Navy And Airforce

Over 48 hours after the 50-man armed robbery gang stormed FESTAC and robbed two banks in gestapo style, the police in Lagos Thursday said their appeal for help to the Nigerian Navy (NN) and Nigerian Air Force (NAF) did not yield results.

Speaking on anonymity, senior police officers told THISDAY that they had radioed first for help from the Navy in Lagos, when the armed robbers struck that morning, but got no favourable response.

According to the sources, the navy had told them (the police), that even their smallest vessel cannot access the canal since it's too shallow, adding that they should seek help from the Air Force.

Similarly, the police had allegedly sought for the air power of the Airforce to assist in pursuing the suspects as they made their getaway through the canal.

The senior police officers also claimed that the Air Force had not outrightly rejected to help, rather they were told to contact NAF headquarters for clearance.

When contacted, the Director Navy Information (DINFO), Commodore Aliyu Kabiru, said  "The NN is constitutionally responsible in defending the nation's territorial intergrity by sea. Thus, the Navy operates in the open seas.

WooooooooooOoooooooooooW!!!!!!!!!!! Do u realize how ridiculous any of this would sound if it was anywhere else in the world???????? But in Nigeria...MADNESS is nothing. This so called 40 man team of robbers should have been blocked on the water or tracked thru air which would have made their escape impossible. But noooooooooo! Not in naija. This guys killed a baby girl who was innocently laying in her bed..and her mother. Yet they have gone Scott free. Fuck this country.

If we have a million people who are angry, like the way you are, over the way things are being run in this pathetic excuse of a country, things would normalise by force. I echo your anger, well done.

  3. Odiegwu. Increase their salary and equip them well, then they will do their job. U dont expect a police man whose monthly salary is nothing to write home about to go and fight with the arm robbers. Even most of the police men are old men who are suppose to go for retirement even their ogas at the top. Those thieves are wel equiped and you will never compare their Gun with that of nigeria police.

Another thing, nigeria police need to be well trained and not just employing them base on waec level but they need to undergo military training and if possible seminars should be organized for them about tactics they can use to deal with thieves.
Nigeria is a messed up country where eye service and the itiboribos are getting the good positions because they are connected and not base on certificate so what do u expect at the end. The army/police should be paid well and equipped cos no one will like to die like that and not like their family will be taken good care of.

    3. Do u know how much a police officer earns right now?
As it is, evwn if u give them 1m monthly they still wouldnt do their jobs. Same way nigerians rarely obey road signs if they know there is no one to apprehend them.
Its also not so much about equipment, as superior training beats superior weapons. I know the police have helicopters in lagos so why wasnt it deployed? Am sure there wasnt aviation fuel in it despite appropriation. The police needs total rebranding, reformation, both physically, socially and mentally.

    4. Moreover, no insurance to cover them if dey die!!!
Baba needs to focus on military welfare.......

    5. Please your first paragraph is absolutely nonsense, were they(police officers) forced to join the police or were they forced to remain there. They are useless, even if you pay these guys N1m everyday and give them the best weapon, a pig will for ever remain a pig. NPF needs a total overhaul pure and simple. Their counterparts in other countries, how much are they paid? But still, manage to be efficient.

    6. Tuscany, that's a lie. Those ppl earn peanuts. See d houses they give dem to live. I was discussing with a lady in a bus why I do not blame police for collecting 20naira and 50naira from people.

      Why wouldn't they?

      Delete
    7. Eka whatever, why would they collect money from people when they are being paid by the government? I agree their salary is nothing to write home about but if they are not satisfied with it,then should resign. Nobody forced them to join d NPF in the first place. So we stop trying to justify nonsense........

    8. Nigerian police are not properly equipped neither are they properly taken care of. Reasons they will never work in accordance with their motto- to serve and protect.
These men in uniform live in shacks as quarters. Messed up environment and all of that yet we expect so much from them. I do not entirely blame them, I blame the government.

Take your mind back to when a reporter (from channels I think) did a documentary/photo splash on the NPF. Their wages, environment etc. Dafuq these guys are living in a hell hole. Now what did the past president say when he saw all of those pictures?
" why did they allow the media publicize these?"
I mean...it was his administration. What effort was made to right the wrong? Rather he frowned at the expose.
      Bomkom! Smh.

The police will be our friend when the govt makes their living conditions somewhat better.

A happy man is willing to help and make others smile.
An angry man is full of bitterness and only expresses what he feels to others.

  4. We do not have security in this country simple. Why didn't they ask boko haram for help. They should scrap NPF or do a complete overhaul and retrain them.

  5. Look at their useless long story o, when they had an emergency at hand? See them shifting blame o. So if the air force or marine whatever force cannot supply a carriage thru the same route the thieves used, it means that the robbers are more equipped than they are.. what a shame. And the police should shut up, they are the first point of contact to the citizenry when such attacks happen.. instead of making frantic calls and wasting time for 2hours, why didn't they go with their guns to combat the thieves whilst the air force decides how to help them? So they were in their offices arguing, whilst innocent people were dying?? Smh

    1. Of course, they will pass the buck as usual.Though a few times i sympathise with them, most times I don't.

These same set of cretins will harass, assault and intimidate innocent people. If they can harass an unarmed person then why can't they face the armed robbers?

I saw a video of 1 fighting a young girl in the mud with his last strength .

Most times they are drunk.Even if they were paid better salaries,it will be business as usual with them.

They need a total over haul, rebranding, they need to be decent, responsible and carry themselves with some level of dignity. They must learn to respect people and have regard for the human life.Their primary duty is to protect the people.

Everything is wrong with the NPF.

  7. 50 armed robbers? JESUUUUU how much did they steal? How will they share the money? 50!!! I don't believe it jor!
They should continue blaming themselves...cowards! You all think the oath you swore, to protect the lives and properties of the good people of Nigeria is lip service? Don't worry, there will come a time, when you will be required to honour that oath or leave....Nigeria is changing...useless people

  12. Very silly and shameless lots!
So, the police commands or Lagos State can not afford to buy one or two helicopters to fight crime???!!!!!
Very ridiculous set of people that don't value human lives.
They needed to contact the military just to help them fight robbers. Mtcheeeww!!
The Lagos State government needs to get its priority right by first doing anything and everything possible to protect lives and properties. There's too much robbery going on in Lagos these days.
    GOD BLESS NIGERIA.

  13. An average Nigerian joins the NPF for the wrong reason. No matter how much they pay them they'll still never perform their duties well. These people collect money from both the state and federal government yet the lives of tax-payers who cough out 20percent(i work in lagos) of their hard earned ego is not safe.
The should blame the army too join.
When thieves came to rob in Ikorodu, it was in front of a Police station, NPF did not gree and come out. Now they are saying nonsense. It is only to stay on the road, stop your car and tell you "madam we just want you to know w are the ones working here" that they know.

Upward review, way way better than what they were getting.

That force needs a total overhaul. Like you wrote, people joined for the wrong reasons.

Retire the freakin old ones! Get people with better education!

Stop the careless,"i don't care" attitude.
      Build them better quarters.

Release correct telephone lines to the public, mount people there for emergency response 24hours round!

Even some police stations look like huts. Abeg abeg!

  18. I wouldn't blame the police, nobody wants to die. I just have an issue with the fact that irrespective of the complaints by the police of lack of superior weaponry, nothing has since been done about it. Leadership indeed is the problem of Nigeria.
