This shows that poverty is the major cause of early marriages. A lot of women get married to escape the poverty plaguing their families , while parents give their children out for marriage to avoid providing for them.
ReplyDeleteThe truth is this isn't restricted to underage brides. I've read a lot of comments on this blog where women say they can't wait to get married because of poverty. In as much as I can relate with that, the question is 'what if you marry a poor man?' Has the poverty absconded ?
Religion is another key factor.
Women need to be empowered so they can aspire to be self reliant and independent. Marriage shouldn't be ventured into for financial gain or lack thereof .
Parents should not bring children to this world to suffer especially if they will end up giving them out to old perverts to molest.

DeleteThe difference is that those American girls rush into the marriages themselves mostly out of waywardness or naivety, but in Africa and Asia they're forced into it cos of poverty.
