University Degree And Getting A Job In Nigeria - Blah Blah Blah

"They told us to go to school and get 1st class and 2:1 but they didn't tell us that we should change our ages to less than 20 years so we can beat the competition.

Now my friends with those good grades can't even get at least an entry level job because they are above the age requirement for those types of jobs that use age as a requirement.

The worst is to my friends that went abroad for their MSc, when they are back, they can't even get a job cos it's either they are "over-qualified" or they don't have somebody to push for them. And also when they get those jobs with their almighty and Ogbonge MSc degree, they would still be paid same as a BSc entry level is being paid.

The truth is there are jobs but there are no qualified hands.

The truth is most recruiters are being lazy to go through CVs so they now use softwares to check for keywords to match with their requirements in your CVs thereby missing out on the real talents.

(A recruitment manger at Google said, the best people for the jobs don't have the best CVs and the people with the best CVs ain't the best people for the job. So they ensure they go through the CVs one after the other without those softwares.)

The truth is most peeps even get jobs when they don't meet most of the requirements and the question is... How? ........ Sha ma bere.

The truth is our Labour laws don't even advocate for those unemployed.

The truth is it's either God's favour or Luck. When you meet all job requirements, they won't even reply your email cos they already have given out that job as a "slot" to the 'real owners'. LOL

Oh, i just remembered.... Even those that get the jobs through recruitment agencies are also being shortchanged. You get an organization that pays these recruitment agencies lets say 150k and these recruitment agencies get to pay the guys they recruited for the organization 50k. Haba!

Even those that are working don't even get paid at the end of the month while their bosses lounge with their sweat during weekends and they come to office on Monday and talk about Motivation blah blah blah......''

    2. Your grammar and composition are a big part of why you don't get jobs. If you were an HR manager, you would understand the verbal assaults we are subjected to in the name of recruitment. Or those who show up for an interview wearing jeans and a t shirt. Or open toed shoes and a mini skirt. Or those who can not tell you a single thing about Accounting but possess 2-1s. The truth is our universities arm to favor quantity over quality. They churn out raw and half-baked products that are not ready for university to end. Most of our graduates are unemployable. Period!!

    3. Just like d writer said u use software to seave.
His grammar or not he passed a message.
Half baked graduates from universities, so no fully baked one? Am sure u didnt check to pick the fully baked graduate s, cos u jus jump at 2.1 and expect magic. Did check the other ones with 2.2, or lower credit?
Amnsure we all went thru nigerian universities where we sort to "move on"

    4. Excuse me sir, I don't think its the university system. I think they are many candidates chasing few jobs. Look at me, I graduated at the top of my class with 2'1. GPA of 3.75/5. A certified PMP. How many PMPs are there in Nigeria. The PMI says less than 1500. But guess what, I have no job and I am 31. Graduated in 2009. So is it quantity for me, I doubt. I just think its best I look for money to start a business and watch it grow. And by the way I read a social science course...not like any course is easy though.

    5. Sir/ Madam and when did clothing affect what the person has to offer from their heads, I mean if u don't have any set means of getting money how then do you even buy a proper shirt or pants or long flowing skirt, HR peeps need to look into some messed up rules you all have regarding dressing, I guess u graduated with a 1st class as well so you got a job too.
Even the senators got wardrobe allowance, abi them didn't have clothes before being elected. They know they should look good.
My take is let's all create jobs for ourselves and maybe then these coys would start making sense when they say they're recruiting. Shiity pple trying to mess the effort of an unemployed grad

    6. Some of these employers are really wicked. Imagine paying an employee 30k salary! What nonsense???they know that pple are desperate and will take just anything. Wicked humans. Imagine, the money spent on transport. My friend is a contract worker in sterling bank and she is paid 40k..after all the stress and transport. .can you imagine? God will punish all these wicked employers

    10. If it's to complain about Nigeria, there are at least one billion complainants. But how many people are willing to stand up and actually make a change?? I own a company and I'm sorry to say I would rather employ someone who hasn't attended university but is willing to learn than some of the graduates I encounter. Graduates drop the sense of entitlement and start from somewhere. The job market is over saturated with graduates so the graduate title is becoming old and not so special. Most of you guys haven't even read a single book to better yourself since you left university. Yet you want to be at the top? How? Instead of complaining why not become a shining star among your peers by shunning TV and unnecessary conversations for a couple of months. Find out how to be a solution provider in a country filled with problems, by reading and picking the brains of people who are successful around you. The people who are on top now didn't just fall there. Most of them encountered the same or worst problems than you and came out victorious. To be extraordinary in a country that is full to the brim with intelligent people you need to take extraordinary steps. BEL ESPIRIT

No area or value of houses, no amount of shares, no value of the economic trees he stated. Meanwhile he's claiming just 30 mill in his account and his wife is wearing the latest Cartier watch worth over 10 mill. Nigerians stop sleeping the sleep of death oooo. It's a very terrible sleep. Any small thing Nigerians will be claiming victory, even when it's the same people returning in different packaging. Anyway what do I know? that's none of my business.

Sometimes I regret coming back to Nigeria. My mates are back there getting their papers through one means or bagging another degree and working. Am here still collecting money from dad or mum. There won't be a change, except those in charge do something.

I no listen. Graduated with 2:1 yet no job. The most painful one was my interview with Workforce (a recruitment coy), they gave us forms to fill and also get 2 ogbonge guarantors and then come for documentation after scaling through all their screening stages. Only to be told they'll get back to us. Till today, nothing yet.

  39. Things are really tough, sometimes you have to wait before getting a job. Everyday I'm glad I didn't go back to naija after my second degree. No apologies jare. When I see some cvs I weep sha, who go employ you with a poorly written cv? It's just a huge turnoff. Thank God you are now aware of the keywords stuff, with employers having thousands of cvs to go through the keyword stuff is what they use. Arrange your cv very well, there are cv writing sites to help you. Google them. Have the keywords required for your field in ur cv, if it is IT, have words like Sql, active directory, html/css, excel etc.
Meanwhile if you don't have skills , don't lie rather go and learn them. Enroll in a school, train yourself, watch videos etc. after all someone won a medal in javelin by watching YouTube videos.
When called for interview, be confident and smile. You may not know the stuff but just say I'm a fast learner and give an example of when you learnt fast.
Don't think any job is beneath you cos you have a foreign dergree, I know it's hard but there is always a starting point. The most important thing is experience!
Finally, pray pray pray. There is an employer out there for everyone, it may delay but it is not denial.
I have plans to go into recruitment in the very near future to help people write good cv's.

  40. I don't know what is involved with getting work in Naija, but just lie about the age. It's survival of the fittest, you want to work or you don't want to work? Make yourself look youthful and bluff. Who tells 100% truth on their cv anyways? Honesty is not always the best policy, if you gotta tweak that shit, tweak it and keep it moving. You playing goody goody and still hungry out here parents wondering when you will get out of their pocket. I suck at Excel, but it is always on my cv because I took the course, I don't have to disclose my level or proficiency, I took the course and that is all that matters..lol. Anything can be learnt on a job, and most jobs still will have to train you no matter your credentials, so apply even for jobs where you are lacking some of the qualifications, you can still get in on the likability factor, which is 90% of the time what will determine if you get the job or not. Go in professional, but more of a conversationalist style, try to bond with the interviewer in some way, if is even to complement the paint colour on the walls, or the lovely flowers out front, just some mundane thing to connect with. If you lack the age and qualifications you have to up the personality and likability to be a contender.

hmmm.... @Cynthia Iyede - Me I also went to Work Force for interview years back, they sent me somewhere I didn't get the job. But the lady who works there approached me and asked me my name and took my digits. Two weeks later I got a call for another interview from them, I went and I didn't like the offer so after being told I was a 'preferred candidate' I declined the job. they even called me three weeks later to confirm I wasn't interested.
One year later, I still got a job offer from them which I declined because I had a better job already. I think they are legit, that's all I am saying. And no, I don't know anyone in there. God help us all.
I have just spent all my savings to pursue a Masters Degree in the UK. I have closed my ears to everything people are saying about me still joining the pool of unemployment when I return. Because I am certain I am on the right track and I won't be discouraged. Naija can be bad, but people's stories are different and God has different paths laid down for us all. We just have to trust his plan.

    @Anon 04:31 - I agree with you oh!
No job no job. Yet, all the money they get from bfs and caring relatives, go on vain things. Please let's all do a reality check.
I used to be like that oh! dreaming big for up to a year after I left Uni. Until God opened my eyes and my life has never been the same. I came in contact with certain people who have mentored me till today and taught me real sense i couldn't get in Uni or from the society around me. When I applied the rules, I saw positive changes in my life.
I live along Lekki-Epe exp way, but I got a small job with a company far inside the mainland. I was doing at least three hour drive everyday leaving my house at 5am and returning at 10pm. First to come to work and last to leave because of distance. Everyone in the company thought I was weird 'travelling' all the way just for 60k of which over half goes on fuel and feeding. But I knew what I was gaining. The second job i got was for 80k, still on the mainland but closer than the previous one. That one bad pass cos the salary wasn't constant sef. Colleagues dey yab me tire, I no hear. I was learning everything from every unit in the company. I will understudy and ask questions to the extent that I knew more than my stated JD. But after about a year, one day, I met someone for the first time who told me a certain company was hiring and I should try my 'luck'. I went for the interview, amongst others, and I got the job. Why? The experience I gained from that my suffer head jobs came in very handy. They were amazed at the things I had done in less that two years.
I got over 4 times my previous salary, for starters, amongst other benefits. Infact, I left the previous company with two months of unpaid salary and about 200k marketing commission that I had been applying for them to pay me. And I wasn't bothered. My ex-boss sef was asking me what they can do so I can stay back, cos they all knew that my performance despite all my challenges was the second best in my department. The people who I met in that small company abusing management and not bringing new clients cos they are angry at management, are still there asking me for recharge card every month end.
I hate remembering those days. It wasn't easy.... Na my friends no laugh me? I went with a friend of mine on the day of the second job interview and she refusedAnd went to tell everyone that I had signed up to a life of suffer-head. It took her more than a year to get a job, by which time I had bagged experience. At a point she got so frustrated, but God helped her and she got something. Everytime she sees me, she always reminds me of this incident.
