The New Olu Of Warri Is Godfrey Emiko

A regent is to oversee the affairs of Warri Kingdom in Delta State despite yesterday’s official announcement of the death of the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse II, and the selection of an Olu-designate.

The Olu-designate, Prince Ikenwoli Godfrey Emiko, was presented to the Itsekiri
people at Ode-Itsekiri (Big Warri), yesterday morning, but it was gathered that he would not ascend the throne for at least three lunar months in line with the tradition of the Itsekiri people.
Consequently, in line with Section 8 of the Traditional Rulers and Chiefs Edict, 1979 of the defunct Bendel State (now Edo/Delta states), a regent is to oversee the affairs of the king pending the coronation of the Olu.

It was gathered that the Oloriebi (head of the Ruling House), Dr Duakpemi Andrew Ayu, has automatically assumed the position, in line with the 36-year-old documents.

A knowledgeable source said the regent is usually the “oldest among the sons and grandsons of the past three Olus”.
The 1979 gazette stated that “Head of the Ruling House acts as the Regent from the time of announcement of the demise (of the Olu) until the installation (of Olu-designate).

“At the end of the period of about three months, the Olu-designate is formally installed by the Ologbotsere in the presence of the general public,” the document concluded
The position was confirmed by various sources, including the Secretary and a member of the influential Itsekiri Leaders of Thought, Edward Ekpokpo Esq., and Mr Sunny Amorighoye.

Ekpoko, who responded to our The Nations enquiry on the absence of Ologbotsere, Iyasere and Uwangue, said there was no doubt about the regency, insisting that Dr Ayu had become the regent immediately after the announcements yesterday.

Speaking in the same vein, A.S. Mene said the position of Ekpoko is in tandem with the 1979 Gazette, revealing that everything done by the Olu Advisory Council and the Ojoyes (noble Chiefs), both in announcing Atuwatse II’s transition and choosing Olu-designate, followed due processes.
Meanwhile, the official unveiling of Prince Ikenwoli Emiko after the news of Atuwatse II’s transition took place at a poignant ceremony, which was held at the Ode-Itsekiri (Big Warri), the traditional headquarters of the Itsekiri.

Announcing both the passage of Atuwatse II and the  choice of Prince Ikenwoli to the Itsekiri National Congress, the eldest member of the Olu Advisory Council, Chief Tesigiweno Yahya Pessu, who is the Ojomo of Warri Kingdom, also performed the traditional ‘breaking of the calabash’, which represents the death of the king.

The ritual was punctuated by shouts of ‘alejefun’ and otatse, meaning “the white chalk has been eaten by the earth” and “the anchor is broken”, respectively.
After performing the traditional breaking of the chalk-bearing calabash, Chief Pessu, who is also the Chief Priest of the kingdom, reeled out the code of conduct for the entire Itsekiri nation, home and in the Diaspora, for the three months that the departed Olu would be mourned.

According to the Chief Priest, “Itsekiri all over the world should be mourning until the burial ceremony is performed and done with. This may take three lunar months. All Itsekiri men and women should wear their (expensive) clothes upside down.
“There shall be no party, no drumming, no form of merriment for the Itsekiri anywhere, until this process is over. We are in a mourning position now. This shall be in all Itsekiri domains”.

The passage of Ogiame Atuwatse II, the Olu of Warri, was announced to a tumultuous crowd of Itsekiri people by the Chief Priest and in the presence of other members of the council of chiefs at around 11:50am.
The announcement was heralded with several canon shots.

The name of the Olu-designate was announced at about 12:15pm, leading to a wild cheer among the huge crowd of Itsekiri chiefs, elders and people, who had converged on Ode-Itsekiri to be briefed on new developments.

Describing the mood of the Itsekiri nation at the announcement of the Olu-designate, a member of the Itsekiri Leaders of Thought (ILT), Professor Nesin Omatseye, attributed the cheers that greeted his name to his goodness and acceptance by all.
He said “not everybody would be accepted by all, but this is a person that most of us know over the years that is intelligent, intellectually inclined and culturally exposed. We expect the best”.

Explaining the uniqueness of the choice of Prince Ikenwoli as the next Olu to be,

  1. It's supposed to be a father to son thing I'm surprised that it's his brother this time around. Since he's accepted by all no wahala.

Tradition sha. So those that have fixed weddings and burial and all other celebration will shift the date?

  4. They have explained why it has to be an Emiko. This is not Ife tradition that demands rotation per se. Love these historical stories but the names too plenty to digest and makes it boring after some time. Well people should be careful during their lunar months incase of 'incasity'.

    1. Mixed ethnicity. Both edo and yoruba.

The yoruba's name Omowunmi while the itsekiri's name Omawunmi.

  10. I was told in the past that the kingship is rotated , but this Ikenwoli was supposed to take the crown in the absence of rotation, bcos he was the first son that was born while his father was on the throne .

  13. This man should change is name to "patience" 28 years later he got his crown. He was supposed to be king after his father but fate or whatever happened and his elder brother was crowned. If he's not the chosen 1 he won't last on the throne so let us watch and see.
Iteye family please rest abeg. What of the other families that are direct descendants of akengbuwa??
Meanwhile, tsola even tho I still wish we had fine boy king never had a chance. His father, atuwase the 2nd has a son (born just after he ascended the throne) but his mother is urhobo. He's a not so big secret.
I trust my mom and aunties to be in full mourning mood. I hope it's not a bad thing I'm excited I would attend the next coronation wella.....

  15. Stella you should already know this;

It is Iwerre Kingdom not Warri Kingdom though it is Olu of Warri (you know all the Awolowo and legal bits to this). There is nothing like Warri Kingdom. There is Iwerre Kingdom, Agbassa Kingdom, Agbarah, Ogbe-ijoh and co but no Warri kingdom.

Two, the current king cannot produce an heir because only a child born while on the stool can succeed the father. Apparently, the previous olu and his wife had always been christians before his ascension. He could not traditionally reject the stool when it was handed over to him in 1987, he tried to be a full time christian in 2013/2014 but he couldn't fight the powers that be, especially Rita Lori. He was however able to prevent himself from giving birth to a child on the stool. He and his wife delibrately did that so they wont pass on any of these to any of their sons because there are a lot of fetish things he did daily that he never wished on any of his children. The itsekiri stool is quite deep. Other monarchs in Delta have phased out a lot of the babaric traditions but they haven't. The past Olu tried to stop the sacrifices and juju but he faced stiff opposition. Remember the time he announced he was for Christ and his dropping of the ogiame title as well as all the ologbotsere things that comes with it in 2013? (http://www.vanguardngr.com/2013/09/olu-of-warri-reverts-to-ogiame-title/)

Thinking about it now, he would have jeje denounced the thing as he still died less that two years afterwards. So what was the point at the end of the day?

  16. Please don't creat the wrong impression, Tsola didn't get it not because the mother is not itsekiri or Ubini, Itsekiris have good and strong ties with the Yorubas dating over the years and historically. Thorough consultations and fact findings were done and if the ancestors says the errors that was done in the time past by a certain influential family should be corrected who are we to say no? We just pray his ascension will not change him. He is a very nice and humble guy. Itsekiri as a nation stand for truth, equity and justice. Give honor to whom honor is due. Jakes baba ( ogiamen suooo) may your reign be long, peaceful, prosperous and may the original Glory of Warri be restored in your time.we appreciate the maturity and decorum that Itsekiris apply in resolving issues with no bitterness and rancour. I am proud to be a member of this tribe . Aja mo ki Aghan ooooooooooo

  19. What is important is that there is peace in Warri Kingdom. We need to get this right - Itsekiris are actually products of Yorubas; it is the kingdom that is from Bini Kingdom. So you can observe that the language is similar to Ilaje-Yoruba but the culture is Bini. Check out the burial ceremonies of the Itsekiris, especially the songs (they are Bini Songs)
